The First Thing I Chose
An unsent letter from Dick Grayson to Jason Todd
Jason,
You move like him.
Not a copy. Not imitation. Something more unsettling.
The same weight distributed differently, the same training lived in by a body that survived things the training was never designed for.
I know this because I have spent twenty-three years learning how Bruce Wayne occupies a room. What the air does when he enters it. The specific authority of his stillness. I know it the way you know music you were taught before you knew you were being taught.
You came back in September and walked through the Cave, and I felt it before I saw it.
The displacement.
The room adjusting.
I thought, Bruce.
Then I saw you.
Here is what I have not said.
I don’t know where my history with him ends and my understanding of you begins. I have been trying to locate that line for many years, and it keeps moving.
When I reach for you, I am reaching for something I don’t have to look at straight on. Something that does not force me to face the thing I have been looking at sideways since I was twelve years old, the need to be chosen by a man I was terrified of and would have died for, who picked me up from the wreckage of the only life I had left.
I know that.
I think you know it too.
I think that’s why you let me.
Because you have always understood what I cannot say. Because you are the only person in this house who knows what it is to survive Bruce Wayne and build something from the wreckage that belongs entirely to you.
We are the same damage.
Differently housed.
I am not writing to apologize.
I am writing because you deserve to know what you are to me.
Not a replacement.
Not a consolation.
You are the first thing I wanted that was not borrowed from someone else.
The first thing I chose when I finally understood I was allowed to choose.
Dick
Bruce spends a large amount of time trying to engineer outcomes.
Which makes me think his greatest failures aren’t engineering failures.
They’re moments where the engineering succeeds and reveals something about him he wasn’t prepared to know.
Jason’s still half-asleep. His cock isn’t.
Bruce touched him the way men inspect ruined things they still intend to keep.

Jason looked at Dick standing naked in the flashlight spill, the green shorts turned half inside out on the floor between them, and behind him the old Robin case hanging open on the shelf.
He found himself looking with a kind of awful concentration he’d spent most of his life avoiding. The heavy line of Dick’s thighs. The slight softness low on his stomach that had appeared sometime in his thirties and only made him more difficult to look at. The way the cold had tightened his skin. His nipples darkened and drawn hard in a way Jason had noticed, accidentally and then on purpose, for years.
The shorts on the floor did something strange to the whole room. Made it impossible not to think about what had been happening five seconds earlier. Dick stepping out of them. Dick with his hands on himself. Dick younger in them somehow, and not younger at all.
And behind all of it, impossible now to separate from the man standing in front of him, the knowledge of the boy Dick had once been before Jason ever knew him. Photographs. Stories. Bright scraps of fabric gone dull with handling.
Jason stopped the thought there before it could become something real enough to touch.
Jason arrived at eleven forty-three.
Not through the front door.
Bruce had left the east passage unlocked and said nothing about it. Jason found it anyway. He would have found an entry regardless, which was not the point. The point was that Bruce had made it possible without making it easy, and Jason had taken the offer.
Alfred met him in the passage.
Not by coincidence.
He set a hand briefly on Jason’s shoulder. The specific weight of it, the specific duration, the way Alfred had always touched the ones who came back damaged and refused to acknowledge it. Then he stepped aside without speaking. Jason looked at him. Something moved in his face that he did not clear quickly enough.
Alfred went back to the kitchen.
Dick: You said ten.
Jason: I got held up.
Dick: By what.
Jason: Myself.
Dick: That’s not an answer.
Jason: It’s the one you’re getting.
Dick: Sure.
Jason: I was meditating.
Dick: In the shower. Forty minutes.
Jason: It worked.
Dick: That’s what you’re calling it.
Jason: You want details, Dick?
I don’t remember a time when Crime Alley slept. Sirens off the main road. Glass breaking close enough to flinch. A scream that cuts out mid-breath. You learn fast not to look.
I’ve always been this. Robin. Rooftops. Bruises I didn’t earn and hits I took anyway. There was nothing before the suit. Before the rules. Before him.
But there was.
Before the cave, before the lectures, before the hair dye, I was Jason Todd. Wrong street, wrong time, hands faster than my luck. Until they weren’t.
A tire iron. A pair of hubcaps. The Batmobile.
That’s where it starts.
Alfred: Master Dick, this is the third time this week I’ve found your underwear in Master Jason’s hamper.
Dick: …Laundry mix-up.
Alfred: They were inside his jeans.
Dick: …
Jason: That’s not what it looks like.
Alfred: I have been doing laundry in this house longer than any of you have been alive. It is exactly what it looks like.
Tim: Why is no one talking about the fact that Bruce’s hamper had a crop top in it.
Alfred: We are not discussing Master Bruce’s hamper.
Damian: We are absolutely discussing Father’s hamper.
Alfred: The laundry room is a place of discretion. What goes into the machine stays between me and God.
Jason: And the fabric softener. My hoodie came back smelling like I lost a fight in a florist.
Alfred: Master Jason, until your towels cease smelling of cigarettes and regret, you will remain silent on matters of fragrance.

Post-patrol. Dick’s fridge. Dick’s leftovers. Dick’s underwear.
He left an hour ago. The mirror is still fogged from his shower. I’m standing in front of it with my hand on my cock. Not thinking about him. Thinking about what I looked like underneath him. I come looking myself in the eye.
He stops at the crosswalk like everyone else. Waits for the light.
A woman next to him shifts her grocery bag to the other hip and he almost offers to carry it — almost. But Bruce’s voice is already there, the way it always is, telling him kindness is a liability when you’re supposed to be dead.
The rain hasn’t started yet but he can smell it coming. For half a second he’s not here: he’s clawing through satin lining and six feet of Gotham dirt, lungs burning, the taste of pennies and rot flooding his mouth like memory instead of air.
The light changes. He walks. Nobody looks twice, and that’s the thing that still doesn’t fit right in him. He died screaming and the city learned to step over it.
Bruce filed it away. Alfred set the table for three for weeks. And Gotham didn’t skip a single heartbeat.
When he came back, Dick kept his distance.
Not out of cruelty. Worse. Out of care.
Because what do you do with a dead boy who looks at you like he might still remember you correctly? Like some part of those green eyes is asking why did you get to live?
Dick couldn’t hold that question. So he didn’t.
He called instead.
Three voicemails that first week. Jason never answered. Never deleted them either.
Because Dick’s voice didn’t sound like guilt the way Bruce’s did: it sounded like summer nights on the manor’s back steps, stolen soda between them, bruises ignored on principle, and Dick saying you’re my brother, you know that, right — like it was something the world couldn’t argue with.
And maybe it was.
He stands at the edge of the sidewalk again without remembering stopping.
The city moves around him, unchanged, unbothered, alive in a way he isn’t sure he qualifies for anymore.
Somewhere across Gotham, Dick Grayson still means it.
your heart’s got teeth

Jason had come back.
Not the boy.
Something that had gone into the ground at fifteen and resurfaced at nineteen as a question nobody knew how to answer.
Dick had kept his distance.
He’d told himself it was operational. Told himself Jason was volatile. That whatever had brought him back had left seams in him that split under pressure. That proximity would make things worse.
He told himself a lot of things in those years.
None of them were the reason.
The reason was simpler and worse.
He was afraid of what Jason’s eyes would do when they stayed.
They had found the reservoir during Jason’s Robin training.
A run gone long. A door in a wall that Jason had noticed because Jason noticed everything, and Dick had said we shouldn’t, and Jason had already gone through.
The first time, it had just been curiosity.
The third, they brought a flashlight.
By the fifth, they knew where the stone dipped under the water and how long they could stay under before it mattered.
They came back six times before Jason died.
They never told Bruce.
It had been theirs in the way things become yours when they’re taken rather than given. Chosen rather than assigned. It existed outside the family’s architecture entirely.
“I used to come back,” Jason said.
“After.”
“Yeah.”
Dick looked at the water.
“Me too.”
Jason glanced at him.
“You never said.”
“Neither did you.”
Then Jason almost smiled.
“You used to make me swim laps in this thing.”
“You hated that.”
“I hated losing.”
Jason stood up.
He pulled off his jacket. His shirt. The rest without commentary. Economical. Complete.
Jason undressed the way he moved through rooms, like his body was simply a thing he lived in rather than managed.
No hesitation.
No awareness of being watched.
Dick didn’t watch.
He heard the sound of Jason entering the water. The sharp breath of cold immersion. The displacement of water against stone.
Then silence.
Dick followed.
They swam the reservoir the way they had as teenagers.
Not racing. Not performing.
Just moving through the same dark water in the same old dark.
At one point Dick floated on his back and looked up at the vaulted ceiling and let his mind go blank. Not empty, exactly, but unguarded. For the first time in years.
Jason was somewhere to his left.
Present.
That was enough.
When it happened, it wasn’t sudden.
There was a moment. Barely there. Dick could have turned his head away. Could have let it pass like everything else he had chosen not to touch.
He didn’t.
It was not a long kiss.
Not urgent. Not desperate.
Chosen.
The kind of kiss that happens when two people have been circling something long enough that stopping feels like more effort than continuing.
When they separated, Jason looked at him.
Said nothing.
Which was its own kind of answer.
