The Confused Witch

-pointed and sometimes horned hats (garments jews in the middle ages were legally forced to wear to identify us as subhuman) 

-black robes/clothing (see above)

-green or otherwise unnaturally colored skin, altho sometimes they’d just straight up go w/ darker skintones

-large and/or hooked noses (often featuring warts)

Pointy hats.  Okay.  THIS is what the Judenhat looked like:

It was usually white or yellow, sometimes red, domed or shallowly pointed, with a spike or knob in the center and a narrowish brim.  It does not look anything at all like the classic witch hat.

Much closer to the classic witch hat, no?  Note also the black dresses and shawls.  Speaking of which:

Black robes. There’s a long history of Jews in the diaspora being required to wear badges or other articles of clothing to identify us as Jews.  I can’t find any instances of black robes being among them.  Hasidic Jewish men do traditionally wear black hats (sometimes broad-brimmed) and coats; this is (a) not something we were ever forced to wear, and (b) not remotely mistakable for classic witch’s garb, which tends to be basically some variation on what old women wore throughout most of medieval England.

Broomsticks.  I … what?  In what imagery is a broomstick associated with Jewishness?

Now, the large/hooked nose is absolutely a caricature aspect of The Jew that has been conflated with that of The Witch, by virtue of identifying its bearer as “sinister-looking”.  Likewise the greenish/sallow skin, which is absolutely a racialization of The Witch in a way that aligns her with both Jews and Roma (as is the heavy curly/frizzy black hair, another frequent feature of The Witch).  Conflation of otherwise unrelated outgroups is a thing the medieval Church did a lot, and this is a prime example.

But for the most part, witch iconography in contemporary America (including things like the cauldron and the black cat, which usually don’t show up in costumes) is drawn from English folklore about witches.  Most of it is not, in fact, about us.

That said: because there are antisemitic and anti-Roma racialized aspects to the contemporary version of The Witch, it’s … really probably a good idea to just avoid that imagery altogether in one’s Halloween costumes and decorations.  If you feel you absolutely have to do a witch costume, at the very least don’t tint your skin and don’t put on a fake hooked nose.

Small devotional acts.

Collect and honor dead butterflies or moths*

Remember lost loved ones*

Place flowers on unmarked graves*

Eat foods with poppy seeds – use more poppy seed dressing*

Decorate using poppies*

Contact the dead*

Press or dry some flowers*

Go outside at dawn or dusk

Give donations to people who need to put a pet down

Have spaces where you can avoid time pieces

Plant flowers for butterflies

Say hello to any crows or ravens you see

Turn down the brightness on your phone screen

💀 Offering Oil For The Dead 💀

Here’s a oil that I made in honor of Thanatos (also props to him for giving me this advice to fill my skull dropper!) This oil is to be used as a offering to Chthonic deities and spirits. You can anoint a candle when working as well as this oil is suppose to have a soothing feel to it for comforting!

What you’ll need: A Carrier oil (I would recommend olive oil but I’ll be using Vitamin E oil), Lavender (essential oil or the herb it self), Rose petals/buds, Myrrh (since this works well for Hades and Thanatos I’ve heard and can be either essential oil or the ashes from incense)

Optional things you can add: Poppy seeds, a bone, graveyard dirt, something dead, a quartz crystal, Selenite crystal, Willow bark or leaf (this aids with safe passing in the afterlife and is also good for protection against negativity and evil).

Directions: (usually when I’m making an oil or potion I light candles and burn incense, along with playing soothing/fitting music. Just a quick note!)

Cleanse the bottle first ( I did so with my juniper smudge wand). Add each item into your bottle, making SURE your adding your intent. (Lavender for peace, Rose for remembrance, Myrrh for troubled souls and can help with protection.) When adding a bone or something dead make sure to thank the spirit to the item. And your done!

Chthonic (or chthonian) deities are are Gods that dwell beneath the earth. This includes any Underworld deities, as well as deities that are associated with the Underworld (Gods like Hecate would be included, since They often visit the Underworld). Some of you may have noticed that there’s hardly any information on how to worship certain chthonic deities. Here, I give you some starting tips:

With most chthonic deities, offerings are usually poured down instead of sent up. This means incense is a less common offering, as you want to offer things that are poured down into the earth, where They symbolically reside. I usually offer oils (often olive oils) and teas. Other offerings may include wine, juice, blood and essential oils. I pour the physical remains into the earth after ritual–just make sure you’re not harming any nature when you’re doing this!

I know that in some pantheons, it’s common  to take a sip of a drink before offering it to a heavenly deity. With chthonic deities, don’t take a sip before you offer it. It’s traditional to offer the entire drink to Them. (I got such a death glare from Hades when I didn’t do this correctly pun intended).

If you God is associated with the dead, cleaning up cemeteries and tending to old graves are GREAT versions of philanthropic worship! 

Stones are often used with chthonic deities, in spells aided by Them and on Their altar. Check your deity’s symbols for appropriate stones, but in general, any dark, jagged stone works best (such as obsidian and smoky quartz).

You may make an altar to chthonic deities easily. Black, grey, metallic, and purple candles are common (depending on your God). Stones, money, any bones (or representations of bones) you have, and items passed down in your family (a form of ancestral worship) also work well on the altar!

You may create an altar to spirits of the dead or your ancestors too if you wish!

Remember that the element of earth is sacred to most chthonic deities as well. Using dirt, herbs and any other earth elemental magic works in devotion to Them.

Although spirit work is common with chthonic deities, it is not required. Again, spirit work is not required. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it, don’t.

If you do pursue spirit work, treat them kindly but remember that some spirits do lie. Pendulums, tarot, astral projection, and offerings work well as beginning spirit work.

If you don’t feel comfortable using your blood in magic, don’t. It is not required.

You do not have to be a certain type to witch, or even a witch, to worship a chthonic deity.

Do not forget to study up on your God! Learn their stories, associations, powers, and traditions. All chthonic deities are different!

And finally, but most importantly, talk to Them. Talk to Them silently, out loud in front of an altar, or write to Them in a journal (which I do all the time). They are Gods, so They will listen to you, and respond when They think best.

OP NOTE: Your worship is YOUR worship. This post is a guide for people who have had trouble finding information on worship for their deities. It is not law. You worship how you feel best, and it’ll be worth more than anyone else’s advice will.

Hello lovely followers! Recently I’ve gotten an influx of questions about energy manipulation and decided to get around and do a manual about it. Disclaimer, these are all based on my experiences!

What is energy manipulation and why is it so important:

Energy manipulation is just what it sounds like. The manipulation of energy both in you and around you. It’s important because it is a fundamental key in the practice of magic. At its core, magic is energy. It becomes magic when it is manipulated by the castor, witch, or practitioners to do their bidding. 

The first part in this guide will deal with sensing energy. We won’t necessarily be manipulating it today. Sensing energy is perhaps the first step of actually working with energy, as you must sense it to be able to manipulate it. Here, i’ll be going through several different techniques. 

First and foremost, I want to go through a general technique that can be used for both meditations and centering yourself.  

Deep Breathing: 

This is simply a technique that combines both meditation and moving the energy around in your body. In my experience, I am drawing from both energy from the universe, and bringing it into my body, while also expelling negative energy within me. 

This is a simple way to get your energies moving while also cleansing yourself of negative energy. 

You will need to either sit up or lay down. let your palms lay upward, and close your eyes. 

Now, all you have to do is breathe.  As you inhale deeply, envision pure, golden light from the universe coming into your body. This is pure, cleansing energy, Energy that will help and cleanse you. Feel it going in through your nose, down your throat and into your lungs. Feel the warmth. 

On your exhale, envision dark energy leaving your body. This is negative energy, the energy that is weighing you down. These are your anxieties, stresses, and insecurities. Give them to the universe, and let the universe cleanse you. 

Focus on breathing in the energy, and breathing it out. Focus on your breathing. Occasionally you’ll have other thoughts, but that’s fine. Just gradually return to your breathing. 

The Hand Technique:

This technique will be good for those of us who are good at visualization. For beginners, i recommend you get into your deep breathing state. You don’t have to be in a deep meditative state, simply calm your mind, and prepare to focus on something. 

Step one: Sit down. If you have back trouble, then you can also do this laying down. All it requires is that your palms are upright. 

Step two: Hold your hand out forward, palm facing upward. If you have trouble supporting your arm for long periods of time like i do, simply let your elbow rest on your knee, the arm of your chair, etc. Allow your arm to be supported. 

Step three: Look at your arm. Really look at it. Find a focal point that you’ll allow your energy can stem from. When you find this place, I want you to imagine a stream of energy flowing from this focal point into your palm. Envision it like water dripping down your arms, and pooling into your palm.  After a while of doing this, you should either feel tingling, pressure, or warmth. Keep in mind, these are things that I felt, but usually, you can take any abnormal situation as a sign of energy being felt and moved. 

 The Crystal Technique: 

This technique is especially good for those of us who have trouble visualizing things. You will be using aid in order to do this technique, and while I suggest a gemstone, any living thing will suffice. 

 Find a gemstone of your choice. My go-to for high energy is typically smoky quartz and amethyst. After you have centered yourself (use the deep breathing technique), place the gemstone in your palm, and begin applying the deep breathing technique again. In this instance, you won’t have to visualize, just breath and feel the crystal in your hand. Be aware of its presence.  For some, you will begin to feel a tingling right away, or a warmth. The gemstone will typically give off its vibrations. 

If you’re having trouble feeling this, I would consider rubbing your hands together. This sounds funny, but it will get the energy in your hands working. 

*Typically, when I do this, I envision a swirl underneath the gemstone, like a whirlpool, and allow my energy to interact with the gemstones energy. 

*make sure the gemstone is cleansed, especially if it is clear quartz. I’ve done this technique before with one that wasn’t, and my arm was in pain for an hour. 

And that’s the basics of sensing energy, or how it was for me! Please share this around, and feel free to ask any questions if you have them. Next time I’ll be posting ways to actually manipulate energy.

It is not surprising that Thanatos does not appear very often in ancient texts. Since he is the deity of (and simultaneously the personification of) Death, he was feared more than he was honored or openly worshiped. Even today, most people are weary dealing with any entity that has such a direct relationship with “That Which Resides Below” because of preconceived notions that there is something inherently negative or morally unacceptable to evoke something of that nature (I will write more fully about this some other time and discuss what I believe to be the inherent ambiguity of deities, their general separation from human ideas of moral good/evil). Hence, we do not have a lot of instruction as to how to interact with him “properly” so to speak.

Therefore, it is common to hear that Thanatos does not care for offerings and that he is chief among the Hellenic Pantheon to have no sacred plants or animals attributed to him. And although this may be true, historically, I do not think this means that it is impossible to interact with him today, or that it is inappropriate or unacceptable (or “bad”) to allot him traditional offerings and deal with him as you would any other deity. In other words, I don’t think these misgivings should prevent us from building a healthy and didactic relationship with him.

So, as I understand it, the concept that “Thanatos does not care for gifts” is a not entirely true. Really, it should read: “Thanatos does not care for bribes.” This means giving for the sake of getting something in return; giving as transaction or persuasion. Thanatos does not respond well to those who try to sway him one way or another (for good or for bad) because he is nothing if not just, honest, and fair; he does not take well to silver-tongues and cheats. However, giving for the sake of thanks, for honor, for respect or adoration? These are not problematic. Building a shrine or altar to share with him in order to show that you are open to his presence and willing to learn? This is welcome. Having done these things, I have come to believe that Thanatos is not inaccessible at all. He has lessons to teach too. He has stories to share.

For anyone who is even just the slightest bit curious about how to begin offering to him, here are some things I personally (UPG) find appropriate (and safe) to give. By no means is this an exhaustive list (and it is constantly growing and changing). These are just examples of what I have used so far and saw to be well-received.

This spread doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s one I use in order to get a good idea of where I stand/where things are going when I begin to work with a new deity, or to check in with one I’m already familiar with.

Card 01 - Who is this deity? You can basically look at this card as doing two things. The first thing is verification, to make sure you know which deity you’re dealing with. I’m especially in love with this position because I have a problem of asking after a particular deity and then getting a different one answering me when I do this spread.

The second part comes into play in figuring out which aspect of a deity you’re dealing with, if it comes to that. I have noticed that a lot of the deities I work with will present a COMPLETELY different side of themselves to others. It’s nice to know who you’re getting.

Card 02 - What will our relationship be like? This card kind of colours how I interpret the other cards in the reading. A friendly, easy going relationship will cause me to look at the cards differently than a distant, business-like relationship. But it also serves the obvious purpose of warning you of what you’re getting into.

Card 03 - What do they want from me? If you’re picturing me asking this question in a sort of desperate and hopeless way then you are correct XD;; But yeah, knowing what’s expected or required of you is always a handy thing to check.

Card 04 - How can I best make this happen? It’s kind of difficult to determine how to actually go about what you need to do, that thing and that’s what this card is for.

The first time I did this reading, it was hijacked by another deity who wanted to go out of their way to make sure I knew things were over between us — and the card I got in position #3 was the Two of Swords and the card I got here was the Ten of Swords. I needed to let go and acknowledge that our goals are too different to really reconcile with each other. And in my case, to do that, I needed to realize that the circumstances had changed irrevocably. (Ten of Swords, for me, is not only a death more final than Death, it’s an end to all pretenses and a revelation of total Truth.)

Card 05 - What may get in my way? Because when is anything ever easy, right?

To continue on my last example, what was getting in my way of moving on was my deeply rooted fear of change, of having to rebuild, and an unwillingness to dismantle what was no longer working so that I could build something better, and a fear that if things went wrong, I would have no safe space to turn to.

Card 06 - Ultimate outcome of the relationship. Straightforward enough, I think.

One of the biggest taboos when it comes to witchcraft is sex with spirits. Most people don’t think it’s impossible and if you say it is, or speak about it in a serious manner you’re either delusional, disrespectful, or downright insane. So many people have this idea in their head that everyone’s relationships with Gods, demons, angels, fae, etc., should either be professional, platonic, or very devotional. For some of us, this simply isn’t the case. 

Sex between humans and spirits is something that has gone on privately for thousands of years, and I still don’t understand why we don’t talk about it more. People have been marrying everything from angels, to Gods, to Lwa since the dawn of time, this isn’t a new concept, just one not many know about.

Incubi and Succubi

The term Incubus and Succubus is often used to describe a terrifying creature that steals sexual energy from unsuspecting Christians during sleep paralysis. They were described as little goblins through out Christian and Jewish folklore or beautiful men and women that would lure virgins into sexual encounters and even steal there souls, luckily, none of that is true.  

In reality Incubi (male sex demon) and Succubi (female sex demon) are referred to as the sons and daughters of Lilith and are often summoned as sexual partners for humans. They feed off of sexual energy and can take on the form of your ideal partner. Some even have the ability to mend broken sexual energy, and balance the sacral and root chakra.

They won’t steal your children, they can be banished, and are not nearly as dangerous as one may think.

WARNING!!!: Spiritual sexual assault is a thing, and can be traumatizing, please know how to banish a spirit just in case!

How astral sex works:

Often times it works just like regular sex, other times the other person can almost consume your soul in a moment of ecstasy resulting in really bright lights and sometimes strange bells or ringing. It all depends on what you’re into.

To me astral sex leaves me with the same feeling as physical sex, and the best part is you just need to know how to astral project (That post is on it’s way as well). Simply leave your body find your spirit partner and have fun, it’s as simple as that. 

Dream Sex:

To be honest, dream sex has to be my favorite, mainly because you’re so fully there it feels almost more “real” than physical sex. Incubi and Succubi often visit humans in their dreams, if you’re in a relationship with a demon, angel, God, etc., they also tend to pop in. Regular sex dreams can feel nice, but when it’s with a spirit the feeling multiplies by ten.

Intentional dream sex often requires you to basically set up a date with a spirit you already know/have a relationship with.

Physical Spirit Sex:

Yes. Spirits can touch you. Physically you can have sex with spirits and, yes, it is an insanely weird feeling. This also often involves some form of ritual or a set up date type thing with a known spirit, but it can also happen randomly.

Safety:

I don’t recommend having sex with a spirit that you don’t know, mainly because astral std’s are a thing. Spirits can purposely give you astral parasites during sex, so I recommend making sure you can at least partially trust the thing you’re getting down and dirty with.

Purpose: A spell to set things in motion to expose someone who’s wronged you. Meant for people you’ve spoken out against but no one believes you due to the offender’s social status. 

Needed

A small mirror

A black expo marker or black cloth

(Optional) Candles for protection/amplification

Casting

Cover mirror with the cloth or ink and light candles if you choose

Meditate, focusing on the target. (What did they do to you? Why did they do it? How did it make you feel?)

Recite the following until you’re content:

Put on a mask, Lie all you want. The monster inside you Isn’t a shock.
