If we’re airing it all out — I can’t understand the fandom’s delight with the push and pull dynamic Yunho has with Mingi. Yunho’s so delighted by it too, bringing it up during his lives like it’s something to hehehe over. How absurd. I don’t like it. It makes me uncomfortable. It has, also, made me aware of Yunho’s flaws in the precise, clinical way only women can be when one of their “friends” is seeing someone who’s not exactly up to par. (I’m using the term loosely here, only for the metaphor!) I’m sure Yunho cares about Mingi, in his own way, but his niggling form of affection doesn’t seem (to me, as a viewer) very compatible with Mingi’s (or San’s, actually, but that’s a whole different ask for another time.)
I have it on good authority that Dark! Yunho, toxic boyfriend, fuckboi Yunho etc is actually a major theme in Yungi fanfic. I haven't really wanted to find out for myself so this is all just what I've been told.
So I mean - to the extent that people use the Reality Show content for inspiration to explore dark themes in their fiction, I guess having this variety of relationships in the Reality Show of Ateez makes it a rich source.
Uhh.
I dunno how to answer this. Yungi was so not it for me that I thought I wasn't a shipper at all, until Soobin (the Hybe Yunho!) decided to make the Yeonbin Divorce Era the promotional theme for their post-contract-renewal comeback and I am ALL ABOUT that.
So in Yunho's defense (and they are meager but) - Yunho likes Mingi. He also accepts Mingi for how he is, including the ways that make Seonghwa react with screaming. Yunho also likes pinching Mingi and pulling his pigtails and making him cry and then mopping his face with a soft tissue and putting a candy in his mouth to make him stop crying and then telling him that the pulling the pigtails didn't happen and if it did it's all Mingi's fault - but fundamentally HE LIKES MINGI. He considers Mingi 'his' and Mingi seems to need someone who does that. Yunho notices everything Mingi does and listens to everything Mingi says and responds to him every time. Nobody is allowed to be mean to Mingi except Yunho, and Yunho will actually defend and protect Mingi (not always and not every time, but still).
Also Yunho is very straight but Mingi's sexiness is so incredibly powerful that Yunho finds the attention extremely validating, every time. This is Yunho who expects 20,000 women to scream in adoration at him whenever he gets a close up on stage. BUT I MEAN - if you had Song Mingi melt into an entranced puddle whenever you deign to smile at him a little bit, wouldn't YOU hehehe over it? ... Is it just me that thinks this?? (... This is why I need to start my Ateez sabbatical lol).
Finally, Yunho is in some ways a little bit trapped by his compulsively enacted niceness and sweetness. He needs a way to vent his aggression - the shoot-em-up video game is too easy now, and beating everyone all the time at all the variety games don't happen frequently enough because Ateez doesn't make side content like that much anymore. Yunho is a very, very lucky person, and one of his major points of luck is that his best friend is a masochist who lives for his attention.
