i read a book a while ago about preparations for continuity of government in the event of nuclear war and the detail that stuck to me was this: they made an earnest attempt in the 50s to determine America's survivability if we got the shit nuked out of us, and landed on, among other things, the idea that more or less every nonhuman chordate in the lower 48 would be eaten within a matter of months and then most of the survivors would starve to death over the following year. also they attempted to make plans to bulldoze the cities into mass graves and concluded that there wouldn't be enough survivors left to do so even if they made people do it at gunpoint, to say nothing of surviving bulldozer operators with any level of competence

relatedly based on my reading on mass casualty events, the point at which there are not enough survivors left to bury the dead - whether resorting to mass graves of expedience or not, the undertaking simply being beyond the scope of the remaining labor - pretty neatly tracks the point at which society grinds to a halt and survivors persist in radically reorganized social forms at a greatly reduced level of technological and social complexity. the fascinating thing about that is that burial is not strictly speaking necessary; a dead human is less of a threat to living humans in any terms (disease, ability to attract predators, etc) than a live one. but the psychological burden is incalculable; it's simply in our nature to dispose of our dead, and being unable to do so is a more or less universal threshold for "living like animals"
