Hawke: You know I hate it when you do that.

Varric: "Hawke muttered in an angry aside to the dwarf..."

she‘s right, of course, but it matters to me that it was said. it‘s so easy for someone to overlook his primary motivation between the gritty-vigilantism, tortured-misfit notes of his story and his tendency towards unapologetic observation and realist commentary and, well, gunfire. so easy to say he’s just a cynic and that he likes violence a little too much, and that’s it.

to someone like aria, who is an actual cold and calculated person mostly concerned with power, archangel is so obviously not like her or most other people on omega. it‘s plain as day for her to see. he is a man driven by very lofty ideals. it‘s not about power or personal gain. he relies on violence to achieve his goal and is largely uncompromising about that, that much is true, but it’s so crucial that it was always about how he thinks the universe should be: a better place. a just place. a place where there’s less hurt and corruption, where people who do harm don’t get away with it for years.
