“Do you want this? I don't like licorice.” Driver says, very quiet. He pushes a black Twizzlers stick on a napkin towards Colt's plate. Colt can hardly believe that the guy is voluntarily talking to him, let alone offering him candy. But the way his mouth waters for it instantly is deeply concerning. Come on, where are his defensive instincts? He knows next to nothing about Driver and his intentions, he shouldn't trust him. But fuck, he wants that candy. “Why do you have it if you don’t like it?” Colt frowns at him. Driver's emotionless expression softens for a split second before he tightens it again. He looks at Colt again, but it doesn't feel challenging. “Ryland gave it to me.”

Ryland thinks they met at his favourite coffee shop two months ago, and he always has the sweetest smile on his face when it comes up. Perhaps he finds it romantic. He seems so happy about it that Casey sees no point in revealing that he has been aware of Ryland for about thirteen weeks now and that there was nothing coincidental about their first direct interaction. That is not to say that luck wasn’t involved in any way - no, in fact, there was a whole lot of luck lining the road that led them here.

He let Casey hold his coat as he shrugged on his sweater and rambled about getting distracted by molecular biology news. He made some dumb joke about amoebas then cut himself off abruptly when he realized how nerdy it must have sounded, but Casey was smiling. It drew crinkles around the corners of his eyes. It was the most beautiful thing Ryland had seen in months.
