Trying to spin by yourself if you get a weapon can be very dangerous. With sabre especially, broken fingers and concussions can become a result of bad form and lack of knowledge of the weapon. Good luck!

I can kinda spin a Butterfly Knife and that was because of a thing my friend and I called the Balicomb (A comb but it had the form of a Butterfly knife/Balisong) and he taught me how to spin the Butterfly Knife.

Hello! I am currently a guard captain but the possibility of my position being taken away from me in forthcoming auditions looms over my head. I am trying to get ahead so I can give a solid performance against the competition however I just can't seem to find a song. My question is, are there any instrumental pieces that you enjoy spinning to? or even just enjoy in general? I would love to hear any suggestions!

I know this is SUPER late and I apologize! I personally really like spinning to pop-ier and rock-ier music more than instrumental. I like Ricky Martin for basically anything saucy and there’s a pretty good remix of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness on YouTube by Spinnin’ Records that’s I’ve spun to in the past. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Alright so this year we have a cadet, jv, and varsity teams for winter guard with a total of 77 people, and I'm on varsity and I'm helping choreograph and lead the cadet guard, but I've never choreographed that much before and I don't have much experience being a leader (especially 32 6 and 7 graders). I was wondering if you have any advice for choreographing, teaching, and/or leading a large group of people?

Start off with basics like pointing your toes, having good posture, chin up, etc. In the very beginning give a compliment with every criticism, but this definitely can change as the season goes on. When new members are just starting they need a little bit of confidence and reassurance. Be sure to be there and open up to others, and they will for you. For choreography just try to go with what feels natural, don't force anything (unless it's the kind of style for the music). Good luck!

Hi. I’m on sabre this year and my tosses are pretty good, but my catches are terrible. I need to be able to catch at the catch tape but I usually catch near the spotter tape. Do you know how to fix that?

Think about reaching a lot further out than you normally would. Pretend that you need to catch at the tip and just SNATCH it out of the air. Squeeze the life out of that thing. You'll do great! Just keep practicing :)

Hello so my colorguard is huge and our winterguard has 3 teams ranging from varsity to frosh. This is my first year doing colorguard and I was really hoping to make JV, but the coach told me he needed to hold someone back that can quickly learn choreo to be on frosh. I'm captain of the frosh team and I know I shouldn't be disappointed because this is my first year and captain is a huge honor but :// Help?

Hi so my team has a JV and varsity winter guard and I made jv my freshman yeah (last year) and I asked what I can do to make varsity and my coach said to work on my body under my flag but I'm not actually sure what that means can you please help me and also give me tips on performing and how to catch people's eye

Your coach might be talking about the movement under your flag work such as pointing your toes making sure you are turned out completely, starting from the hips. Try working on some basic ballet such as tendus, plies, posses, turns, etc. As for performance make sure you have tall posture, your chin is up high, chest is out, and you have a huge smile on your face! Chin up and smiling will definitely set you apart from the rest. You got this, you'll do great!

hey i need some advice: im starting my junior year of hs & my guard just got new coaches. we only have 10 people this year, & from the beginning we were told we'd have a 4 person rifle line. i was super excited to be put on weapon, then one afternoon my coach told us to split into flag/rifle, then told me privately that i'm "not improving as fast as he'd like" so im back on flag. i've had a really hard time moving past that disappointment and i was wondering if you had any advice on how i can

What a small guard! I'm sorry about rifle line, that's got to be hard and disappointing. I think the best way to go about it is to prove to your instructor that you can kill it on flag line. Put the emotion you're feeling into your work. Colorguard has always been an escape for my emotions. Whenever I get upset or frustrated I would throw myself into my work and perform the hell out of it. I know everyone goes through things differently and it's up to you what works best. Whether it's practicing rifle when you can, performing your work like never before, having some good cries, or talking to some good friends about it. If it doesn't happen this year you still have next year to show them what you're made of! You got this!

So ou may not be the person to ask but google is not turning up any results- what's the difference between a pattern flag and a performance flag? (My Mom offered to get me a flag to ppractice with bc she's extra like that but I have to pick it out and obviously I don't wanna waste her money on something if there's not a big difference between the 2 and the pattern flags on the website I was on we're a lot cheaper)

I'm not exactly sure I think it's just a difference between fabric and how it's made.

Even with experience and good technique, I always spin with someone helping/watching me. I’ve been spinning weapons for well over a year and a half and I still nearly broke my finger on sabre and split a part of my chin open with a rifle bc tosses within two weeks of each event UNDER supervision of instructors!! because accidents can happen!! To newbies: Bad Techniques Can Increase Your Chances Of Injury On Top Of Accidents. Please be safe!!
