In unequivocal terms, the UK is a police state. We have just lost our right to protest (if they are deemed ‘annoying’ - which will be interpreted to be any protest the government doesn’t like). This means anyone in the UK might face prison for exercising our right to protest.

Please, please I’m begging non UK folks- to simply know this.

If the right to protest was lost in the US it’d be all over the internet. But nobody is here for UK folks.

This is just as trans people and gay people and marginalised races and poor people are being hit with economic and social harm and are more likely to protest.

Know about us- make sure the UK government is shamed for what it is doing. In the meantime, the UK citizens have some violence to plan.

The English government has always been this way. Chartists weren’t even protestors for the most part, they were literally people who signed a petition to Parliament (mostly to do away with things which were pretty obviously corrupt, like pocket boroughs), and the government responded to their mere existence as though they had uncovered a army of Guy Fawkes clones clutching bombs, and that was in the mid-1800s.

No it hasn’t. Sorry but this is not the time for generalised lamenting using 150-year old instances of revolutionary reform as examples. It has NOT always been this way.

This is a NEW development from Boris Johnson, who is a dangerous fascist. We have had the right to peaceful protest for over a hundred years, and yes, of course the government has found ways to agitate them before. But this is now literally enshrined in law, and those of us not taken in by his funny clown hair and cult of personality have been watching this coming. This is being combined with crackdowns on everything from Celtic nationalism to cuts to trans health are and rights, and that’s not even touching on what this government has done to disabled people in this country.

Don’t handwave the actions of specific fascists and fascist movements as “Oh but the country has always been like that” as your excuse to dunk on the country. This is a call to arms, not an “Ah well”.

It’s especially pertinent on my blog, a diabaled Welsh speaking trans man (technically homeless but has access to reliable shelter). So many people have been clowning on my post but I’m glad you recognised it as a call to action, because it is.

As it stands, the bill affects England and Wales, but, say, if a Scottish person happened to be protest in England, its likely they’ll be arrested too. Local police services aren’t picky about who they pick up.

It might just be possible to arrange protests to the bill in Scotland, which would mean folks can rendezvous there. I have some ideas, but I’ll have to get in contact with an anarchist cell up over the border.

I’ve lost my original post on this but earlier this year I made a post about the handwaving attitudes people give towards the UK. (And it must be said, as an anarchist, continually having to refer to the UK is tiring enough).

Heavy agree! I’ll be honest, it really nettles me when foreigners turn up on posts like these and pull this shit anyway, because if you don’t actually live in the country being discussed maybe keep quiet and just amplify people’s voices who do?

But in general it bothers me that Tumblr is so fixated on “lol England/France is Just Terrible so eh” because like… marginalised people exist in those countries, and not only do they not deserve to be treated like their overlords, you are literally minimising their calls for help and telling them nothing will change because That’s Just How It Is. This is a new development. This is a bad and terrible development that is the precursor to even worse and more terrible things. We need to fight this.

The Chartists were an apposite instance to cite but not by any means the only one I could have used — the country which gave the world the actual Riot Act (among other things) is not one with a history of tolerating dissent. But if you had stuck to that point I probably would have mentally noted “this person, like many people in the UK (and most in the US, this is not by any means limited to your country), is in denial about their country’s long history of social repression” and just fallen silent, because in general I like your blog and don’t particularly want to get into an argument with you.

But the whole “if you don’t live in a country you should never comment on its politics” thing is ridiculous and stupid and usually hypocritical (I haven’t noticed any shortage of European posts mocking Trump over the last 4 years, for example) and is a particularly bad reaction here, where the original post specifically was addressed to people outside the country. If you (and OP up there) don’t want comments from outside your country, then either (1) don’t use social media where the replies are a large part of the point, go make a plain old blog and turn off comments on the post or something like that, Wordpress still has free hosting, or (2) don’t specifically address people outside the country. No, people don’t owe you a commentless reblog.
