Shelley: this is from uh, an 8-year-old, uh, girl named Martha in Glasgow, who wants to know "what you would like to get for Christmas?" and wants to know if you "consider yourself good at giving gifts?"
JL: yeaugh, that's- that's very sweet... ! I'm fe- and now I feel bad saying this, but I'm terrible at, uh... giving gifts. um. ... 'cause I just- I feel like I- I...
I mean, I should get over it, but I feel like it... it illustrates how... there's a gap where the person that I'm giving the gift to knows so much, so much better... what they want, than I know. and it's sort of like, oh- wh... it's just sort of exposing my lack of... even people I really care about, like I just don't know what people want. or I know that if I got- if I came close, it would still be like, "well, this isn't exactly what I want, but," [hosts chuckle] "thanks anyway..."
um, and I'm- I'm also terrible at, um, deciding what I want. I- you know... uh, or, you know, my... idea for my gift is so specific... that, I kinda feel like I should just get it for myself? like--
Shelley: and say it's from somebody? sure.
JL: it's a real problem, for me, this whole gift-giving thing. [hosts laughing] (laughs) and I'm sor- I apologise to Martha.
Shelley: no! uh, I'm sure she loved hearing that answer, though. um. hey, it's--
JL: I just don't want her to- she's only 8! I don't want her to feel bad about. Christmas. [hosts hum thoughtfully and laugh] (chuckles) //
Shelley: we have, uh, a question that, uh, we got from, uh, a little girl named Martha who's 8 years old, in Glasgow.
Shelley: she wants to know what you are "hoping to get for Christmas this year?" and she wants to know if you are "good at giving gifts?"
JF: um... I think I'm.. pretty good at giving gifts! um.. I- I'm- I think I'm a good gift-giver! I mean, I don't know if you g- do you get to judge yourself, as a gift-giver? [Chantil hums thoughtfully]
I feel like, there have been occasions when I've given... thoughtful gifts. um... that, you know, had practical... I gave John Linnell a clarinet once, and I think that was a good.. gift, 'cause he- I don't think he really had a real clarinet? and I know he ended up getting a lot of use out of it.
JF: um... so, you know! that's like, kind of, like.. like a bigger kind of gift to give somebody.
JF: uh... I give- I give- I give a lot of people I know bottles of champagne for New Years, now.
JF: and that seems like- that seems like an incredibly, uh...
JF: ... I don't know if it's how thoughtful it is, it's- it's just uh--
JF: -- it's, uh, it's- it makes me feel like a, you know... you know, I'm living in old time Hollywood, or something. [hosts laugh]
Shelley: well, you know--
Shelley: -- I think it's kinda thoughtful, though, because it sounds like something you should do at New Years? but, I don't know a lot of people that do that!
Tim: it's a nice celebratory gesture for a New Year, I think, yeah!
JF: yeah! it's- I feel like, I'm sorta trying to, like, remind.. everybody around me that, like, this is the life we're livin'. you know?
JF: like, this is- this is what we get, so let's...
JF: celebrate while we can...
