ichiban and majima are dogs and the difference is in the leashes bc ichiban doesn't have one i think
because. majima is always on some kind of leash even if the person on the other end doesn't know they're holding it. he leashes himself to people after shimano's no longer holding it. and it comes with this expectation of violence, that if majima pulls enough someone's going to retaliate and beat him back in line. it's always been that way and there's no reason to expect it to become any different as time goes on
but ichiban is too domesticated for leashes. he doesn't need a leash because once he's decided someone's worthy of his loyalty he'll bow down to them willingly and with the explicit goal of making them proud, being of use to them, being good. he never got to be trained with violence because his obedience and loyalty got him thrown out of the game before anyone had a chance to crush him like that. to make him need a leash
and while i am not going to assume y7 does anything with this because it has better things to do i am wondering a tad if ichiban is the kind of dog majima wishes he could be. perhaps

For as much as the reputation of Yakuza/Like a Dragon has been buoyed by memes about the more comedic and surreal aspects of it, and it has in turn leaned much more into those surreal aspects for the purposes of maintaining popularity (give it up for Patriarch Gondawara’s fourth appearance!!!), the stories of late really like to grab the player by the shoulders and desperately plead for them to understand how fucked up things are at every level of society.
You get to rescue Ichiban’s mom and the little girl in the penultimate chapter, so the entire thrust of the climax is “the government of Japan has conspired with powerful private individuals to turn their undesirable citizens into slave labor they directly benefit from”
