The Most Important Stuff
Part ONE
âThereâs a reason -do do do- for the sun shining skyâŚâ Victor bopped his head side to side as he sang along to the mostly clear fm station coming through his old panasonic short wave radio. He was giving his sweet baby T-car the buff of her life, and didnât she look extra shiny under the garage lights? Sitting cross-legged on the floor, he wiped the polish from the chrome hubcap. He definitely needed to take her out and show her off this afternoon, cruise down Boardwalk avenue in that perfect 4pm sun. âAnd thereâs a reason -la la la- why Iâm feeling so high!â
A squeak of sneakers on the garage floor was the only forewarning he got before âVic! Vic!â Gar rushed in with flushed cheeks and a couple of dress shirts fisted in his hands. âShe said yes! She said yes!â
Victor leaned back on one hand. âWho, your mom?â He cracked.
âNo your mom!â Gar dutifully cracked back as he landed on his knees in a slide, almost colliding into Victor. âRaven! She said we can go on a DATE!â His eyes bugged out. âLike a real date! I need help!â
Victorâs mouth peeled back in a grin. âWay to go, loverboy! Where are you taking her?â
Gar just started babble spewing. âI donât know! Like, it has to be somewhere she likes, but I donât want to take her to her regular spots, I should show her someplace new and interesting, but I donât want to pick something sheâll hate with too many people or bright flashy stuff, but I donât want to be boring either, so I gotta think of someplace smart like a library but has food like a restaurant but not boring like a library and not like a fancy restaurant but also not McRonalds-â
âDude! Slow down before you give yourself a conniption fit!â Victor flapped his buffing rag to wave the nervous onslaught away like smoke. âJust take her to the museum.â
Garâs mouth clicked shut in confusion. And then, âHuh?â
âThe Jump History Museum. They got cool exhibits youâll both like, and thereâs a rooftop cafe with a garden that looks over the bay.â
Gar lit back up with growing excitement. âYeah! Hey, thatâs a great idea! The museum!â Then his face twisted. âHow do you know about that?â
Victor leveled his head to the side. âCuz I go on DATES, little noob!â
Gar leaned forward with interest. âWhere else do you go?â
Victor gently snapped the towel at him. âJust start with the museum, trust me.â
âItâs a real date. Like really real,â Gar sounded like he didnât quite believe himself.
âYou already said that,â Victor pointed out.
âWhat else do I do?â
âI donât know man, hang out like you always do. Maybe try to yap just a little less.â
âDo you think we could hold hands? I mean - should I hold her hand?â
Victor rolled his whole head toward the ceiling. âDude, just ask her. Before doing anything, just⌠ask first.â
âAsk first. Right.â
âTake a shower, mind your manners, pay for dinner - oh! Bring her some flowersâŚâ
âFlowers! Right!â
âAnd donât break her heart man. I know weâre bros, but if you break her heart, Iâll break your bones, understand?â
He was half teasing, but Gar looked hurt and offended. âI would never! Anyway, sheâd break me first!â And then just the thought of broken hearts began to distress him further. âOh my god, this is stupid, what was I thinking? I wasnât thinking! Iâm just gonna make her hate me cuz Iâm so stupid and annoying and dumb-â
âHey!â Victor jabbed a finger at Garâs chest. âHey hey hey! Knock that off! She said YES, dude! She never says yes to stupid or annoying or dumb, you know her better than that. She said yes cuz she likes you, and youâre a great catch, and super cute and junk. Calm down.â Then he laid his hand heavily on Garâs shoulder. âYouâve been besties for ages now, you already have that love to stand on. Just take it slow and talk it out.â
As if on cue, the song on the radio hit the chorus, and Victor couldnât help chuckling as he began to sing along, âJust let your love flow, like a mountain stream. And let your love grow, with the smallest of dreams âŚâ
âOh my god, youâre so cheesy! Thatâs my move, quit stealing!â Gar complained. When Victor just kept singing and started to snap his fingers and sway his torso side to side âLet your love fly like a bird on a wing!â Gar reached out to shake him. âVic!âÂ
Victor grinned victoriously. The pep talk had halted the spiral, and his green buddy was smiling again. âOkay, okay.â
Gar gave him a grateful look and then the side of his mouth curved up. âYou think Iâm cute?â
âShaddup!â Victor cuffed him under the chin, and then he gestured both hands emphatically at the dress shirts clutched in Garâs fists. âWhat the hell is this?â
Gar suddenly went somber and wide eyed. âThis could make or break the whole thing, Vic. This is the most important choice a man can make. The rest of my entire life depends on this moment right now!â He held up the first shirt, a brilliant orange with little green pterodactyls all over. âDinosaurs?â Then he held up the other shirt, eggplant purple behind a pattern of pink flamingos in sunglasses. âOr flamingos?â
Victor stared at Gar long and hard, a deep frown on his face, before he finally said. âAre you kidding me right now?â He shook his head. âFlamingos, duh! Everyone knows you wear flamingos on the first date!â
Gar jerked his head in a fierce nod. âFlamingos, right!â He rocked up off his haunches and rose deftly to his feet.
âAnd nice clean sneakers!â Victor waved the rag again as Gar started away. âAnd comb your hair!â
âSneakers, hair - oh!â Like an afterthought, Gar whirled back around and flung his arms around Victorâs neck. âThanks dude, youâre the best!â And laid a big wet one on Victorâs cheek. âMwuah! I love you!â
âEWW, get off me you sap!â Victor shoved at him but tousled the green hair fondly. âGo get her, tiger.â
âHa!â Gar giggled all the way out the garage. âTiger!â
The grin stayed on Victorâs face. âAnd youâll know what I mean, thatâs the reason.â
Part TWO
A half hour later, heâd moved to the interior, vacuumed and steam cleaned the back seats and floor mats, and now sat in front, meticulously wiping a cue tip around lips, edges and buttons on the dash. Mariah Carey had him reaching for his falsetto, shamelessly warbling along, âI want a lover who knows me yee-yah-yee-yah, who understands how I feel insideâŚâ He paused and closed his eyes, holding up a prayer hand and modulating his voice around the vibrato âoohooh baby!â
âVictorâ
âSomeone toeeaAAAAAHHH!!â Victor gave a high pitch screech at the sight of Raven sitting suddenly next to him out of nowhere like a specter.
âSorry,â she uttered in monotone.
Victor covered a hand over his heart, closed his eyes again, and took a deep calming breath. âGirl, why didnât you just come through the door like a normal person?â
One of Ravenâs eyes twitched. âI was trying to be discreet. I have to ask you something in private.â
This had to be about the date. Victor eyed her curiously. âYeah?â
âIâm going on a date,â she said, and her cheeks colored slightly. âWith Garfield.â
Victor widened his eyes. âWhaaaaaa?â
âYou knew,â Raven accused.
Smirking, Victor shrugged. âHe just asked me where to take you so you donât end up in the cineplex watching Mega Monkeys The Motion Picture and wondering what to do with your hands. Youâre welcome.â
âThank you.â She looked down and picked at her nails in her lap for a moment. âIâve never been on a date before. I thought of asking Kori, but I think she has a very different approach to romance than I do. Sheâs much more⌠physical.â
Victor gave a flat smile and mentally facepalmed. Why didnât he think to give Gar âthe talkâ?? Ugh! Because Gar was asking about holding hands with his big dumb baby eyes, and any concept of romantic relations beyond that flitted right out of Victorâs head in the momentary importance of dinosaurs vs flamingos. âYeah, I donât -â He flapped a hand dismissively. âI donât think you need to worry about that yet. Just have fun and enjoy each otherâs company like you already do. Itâs okay to be a little nervous.â
âHeâs nervous,â she deflected, glancing at Victor and then quickly away. âI can feel it a mile away. What is he nervous about?â
Victor chuckled at her. âImpressing you, saying the right thing, not messing up, what do you think?â
Raven rolled her eyes. âHe talks to me every day.â
âI mean, itâs a little different though, isnât it? This is about taking the next step.â He lowered his voice and asked gently, âAre you ready? For the next step?â
Raven stared straight ahead at the clean and gleaming glove compartment. âThatâs what Iâm wondering.â She bit at the inside of her cheek and then turned to Victor. âI value our friendship too much to disrupt the balance. But if I think of anyone else being intimate or close to him in that way, I feel⌠possessive.â She frowned. âThatâs not an emotion.â
âJeal-â
âDonât say jealous.â
Victor held up placating hands. âIt just means you got the hots. Itâs fine! You like him more than a friend, itâs okay to ease into it slowly.â
âI have affection,â she corrected. âMaybe Iâm just surprised. It almost feels too easy. Romance in books and movies is always so⌠wrought.â
âWhat?â
Raven flicked her fingers around searchingly. âFull of obstacles, chaos, drama⌠I wasnât expecting just⌠hanging out with your best friend who is a dork, talking about nothing and feeling vaguely happy for no reason.â
Victorâs smile went sentimental. âAwwwww, you really are in love!â
Raven turned desperate eyes to him. âSo then what do I do?â
âWhat do you mean, what do you do? Youâre already doing it! Just communicate with each other.â He threw his hands up.
Raven gave a half echo of the gesture. âJust like that?â
âJust like that. Let him know how you feel. Go whatever pace makes you comfortable, have a little fun, donât put too much pressure on it, and donâtâŚâ he trailed off and gave pleading eyes back to Raven. âJust donât⌠hurt him, please?â
He expected her to rear up with offense, but instead her expression softened. âI would never,â she promised reverently. âI would die before I let him hurt like that.â
Victor dipped his chin down. âThatâs a little dramatic.â
She shrugged and looked out the passenger window like they were on a drive. âI guess Iâm dramatic about him. HeâŚâ She suddenly turned to Victor, and to his utter shock, began to sing along with the radio heâd completely forgotten about. âHe takes me up, takes me down, takes me anywhere I want to, baby now.â She did not have a singing voice, but her sense of humor was such an unexpected treat, Victor threw his head back and howled with laughter before joining in. âWonât you please, come around, cuz I wanna share forever with you bayyybeeee!â
Victor would never forget that, how happy she looked in that moment, how excited and hopeful and relieved. It made him excited and hopeful too. For her future. And Garâs future. He felt a happy little ache in his chest, thinking of them together.
âI have an even more important question now, though!â She finally said as she sobered up and reached for something on the other side of her, under her cloak. âIâve been overthinking myself into a cyclone of vapid distress over the dumbest thing. This isnât a formal affair, but it still needs to be a little special, right? But I donât want to come off as over doing itâŚâ
Victor blinked in surprise as she presented two dresses on hangars. âOh!â
Raven held up the first, a wrap style dress, dark maroon with white pinstripes, elegantly casual. âRed?â Then she held up the second, more of a cute tea dress, deep mustard with a smokey gray floral pattern and a soft ruffle at the knee. âOr yellow?â
âUuhhhhâŚ.â This was very much less in Victorâs wheelhouse. But he was determined to see this most honored and treasured Big Brother roll to the very finish. So he tried to imagine them sitting up on the rooftop garden cafe of the museum, leaning toward each other for a picture. âYellow.â
Raven gave a sigh of relief. âThatâs what I thought too. Thanks.â She reached for the car door handle, paused, then turned back again. âThank you, Victor.â She said more sincerely and leaned over to peck him on the cheek. âWish me luck.â Then she got out of the car before teleporting away.
Victor beamed after her. âEh, you donât even need it.â Then he swayed happily to the end of the song. âWonât you please, come around, cuz I wanna share forever with you bayyybeeee!â
