Morty explains to Rick that after Rick dissappeared (he was taken away from the Smith family) he tried to be smart like Rick and that lead him to try to be like Rick

And Rick actually apologizes for how much he hurt Morty

Not only that but he comes with an idea to repair the damage he has done by travelling back in time and trying to talk to himself before he arrived at Smith house:

And that actually seems to work

Past! Rick still ends up living with the Smith family but this time he is more careful of bringing Morty to his adventures and tries to give him a more normal life while being way nicer to him, making the abusive future version of Morty dissappear.

This way both Rick and Morty get a ¨second chance¨: Rick doesn't load all his problems on Morty and the rest of the family and is a nicer grandpa for Morty this time around and Morty gets a Rick that is nicer and it is implied he grows to be way healthier than his future version at the start of the comic.

...ok...

Guys the new episode of Rick and Morty has me thinking and like........ What if the end of the show has Rick finally using time travel to go back to the day he came back "home"?

--- I have no clue how this would fit in with all of the infinite versions of them, but even so, just hear me out lmao ---

What if the finale has Rick sacrifice all of the adventures, the life he currently has with his family, with Morty, because he knows the damage he's caused is too great. They've all become Rick, in a sense; cynical, cold, numb to everything that's thrown at them and WHAT IF, in the end, Rick wants them to live a better life.

So he says his goodbyes.

He says goodbye to the Morty he's grown to love and trust, the smart, hardened, dependant Morty that has been with him through thick and thin for 1,000 years and forevermore...and he goes back in time.

And this time, when he crashes into the Smith's front lawn? He's better.

Rick makes amends with his daughter; even Jerry, god forbid. He fixes things. No more adventures with Morty. No more fights to the death on foreign planets, or torture, or race wars, or Citadels. Just the occasional invention as a christmas gift, or a leisurely drive around earth in his ship.

It's a little boring, sure, and Rick would be damned if he didn't slip off at night to run some multiversal errands from time to time, but he never exposes that part of his life to those he loves.

He watches as Morty grows up, guiding him gently through life but never intruding too far. And Morty is strange, different, but he's happier than Rick has ever seen him before. His family is happier.

spoilers for S9E1 last warning lol

firstly, even acknowledging that the animation has been getting better with each season, this episode went crazy with it. seriously, huge props to the animation department for those action sequences, especially when they're on a consistent yearly release schedule for these seasons

okay now the actual thing i need to yap about: the direction they took evil morty was really unexpected and i dunno how to feel about it. they've spent all of EM's previous appearances amping him up as this like, "above it all" genius who really just wants to do his own thing. we didn't really get any indication that he was, like, lonely? or super eager for approval? he definitely liked to brag about his superiority but it never came across as pathetic the way he did in this episode

on one hand i kind of like it. its a good character flaw for him to have. he can be a little pathetic as a treat. very morty of him to want grandpa's attention. on the other hand, it really felt like it came out of nowhere, and it doesn't help how hard the writers had him commit to it. i was getting a lot of secondhand embarrassment during the diner scene and not in a good way

I was hoping evil morty would come back AND BOOM, HE'S HERE IN THE FUCKING FIRST EPISODE!!!!

but talking about him.... what's his deal?

I'm really confused. I get that both mortys don't really get along, but didn't they have some sort of mutual understanding or something?? why does evil morty suddenly want to rub his alliance with rick in morty's face...like... Did he ACTUALLY end up LIKING RICK??? UH?????
