so we finally confirmed what’s in rick’s flask
“no one fucks with my sweet little grandson” okay rick is a robot again right
man honestly the most annoying thing about the “rick and morty are a couple” jokes in the show are not the quips themselves (because anyone with half a brain knows that they’re not meant to be interpreted as romantic) but the weirdos who take it literally and consider it as “proof” that it’s canon
i’m too old and tired to actively push against or bitch regularly about what people are shipping on the internet but there are a few that do really gross me out and this is one of them. huge fucking ick
something i noticed about the first two episodes of this season - they are both about who rick and morty, across dimensions and realities, are at their core.
episode 1 - we see two very different mortys. one who openly cares about his family, openly seeks his grandfather’s approval/attention, is insecure about his abilities, and does not try to hide any of this. in contrast to evil morty who, underneath all of the supposed apathy and intelligence, is just as needy for attention and validation as morty prime but refuses to accept or acknowledge his need for connection. at the end of the day, no matter how smart or inventive or independent they are, a morty is still a 14 year old boy who craves validation and connection, especially from a rick.
episode 2 is far more obvious - we see a rick without his tragic backstory. for what seems like decades, he’s been wiping his memories for a couple weeks every year just to pretend that he isn’t himself. this works until tragedy strikes, and we see him revert quite quickly to the rick we know, despite having no recollection of his past traumas. rick will always be rick - he’ll always have his intelligence, his apathy, his tendency towards depression, and it’s not something he can escape just by wiping his memories.

hello friends rick and morty is back so i am too
very very hot take in this fandom but i never gave a shit about diane or the whole "you killed my generic wife!" arc. diane has literally no character building apart from literally a couple of scenes in fear no mort ... to me she's just White Woman
i can tell that early on the writers just ran with this during the "fake backstory" because they needed something quick at that moment for that one episode. it's just very ill-thought out and also makes no sense for the story because it literally is not possible to "erase" a single person from an infinite multiverse. at what point does an alternate version of diane not count as diane anymore? what if in another universe rick prime *didn't* make the omega device or someshit? makes zero sense
lol i've just always had a silent dislike for anything diane related because she just has noooo interesting qualities at all and i never understood why there was so much fan content of her, she barely counts as a character. if anything i prefer back when that one OC was popular that people said was rick's wife or something. diane was only ever used as a useless background motive for rick's nihilism when it was never needed!! being a super-genius old fart with knowledge of the multiverse would do that to anyone! literally rick could have just done anything else to inconvenience prime to make it seem like he betrayed him and the story would be the absolute same. giving rick an ex wife that simply divorced him due to his shittiness would be infinitely more interesting to me
i'm glad the show is (hopefully) moving on from this arc altogether by having rick remove his memories of her and having her fuck off from relevance LMAOO
A tribute to one of my most beloved pieces, thank you all! ૮꒰ ๑˃ᴗ˂꒱ა
remember when s3 first came out and it was starting to get a lot of mainstream attention and was being recognized as a well made show and then some idiots had to ruin it by jumping on counters at mcdonalds and screaming at employees over a fucking dipping sauce
Summer, Not The Fans
So I randomly remembered this scene:
Yeaaaah I know. Don't even have to play the audio for you guys, and I've mentioned it before. But I just think it's so INTERESTING. Interesting that this sparked one of the most infamous scenes in Rick and Morty's history. This one moment gets labeled as proof that the show is nihilistic. That the show got too smart. It preached to its choir. It stroked their ego. The show became intellectual slop. Why? Well, Morty just randomly went on about how nobody belongs here on purpose! We're all gonna die. He's just a 14-year-old boy? Pfft, turn the episode off. Put on something funny, like the old Interdimensional Cable stuff. Now, I am aware that I am so late to this conversation, but I have something new to add. This scene was so misunderstood and I think the reason why is people weren't paying attention. The entire point is that it's about Summer. It was never about Morty or the show.
Summer learned that in other dimensions, her parents made a choice. They aborted her to live seemingly happier and more successful lives. Across the multiverse, she's an afterthought, merely a roadblock. That means right now, they're miserable, especially as she learns she's a teen pregnancy that was nearly aborted here too.
She learns that this Morty isn't even her brother. Her brother is dead. She never even noticed. Yet this brother loves her, and wants her to stay. He mentions that it doesn't even matter if she was unwanted. Nobody is ready for life, nobody is REALLY here or wanted to be born. And she should stop focusing on the bigger picture. This is HER dimension. She's alive now. She should go downstairs and forget about it, embrace her current family.
Not to mention that in those other dimensions, her parents are ACTUALLY miserable. Jerry ends up going back to Beth and misses her, which leads to the two realizing their love matters more than their success.
You might all already know this. I'm mentioning it again because it's just so ridiculous how cutting Summer out of the picture contributed to the show being labeled as too preachy and too nihilistic. It was never about saying nothing matters. It was about how family matters. Love matters. It doesn't even matter if you're technically related. As long as you have love, it will all be okay, and you should enjoy your life now. It is insane how people ignored Summer. That previous joke I made by the way? Some people actually think that way, too. This scene is sometimes SO cut out of context that people not only forget it's about Summer, but from a classic episode with Interdimensional Cable that "old-school fans" adore. You can see what ignoring Summer does. This episode is the best example. People just chose to fucking ignore her plotline and her character. They turned a beautiful moment about how you need to stop caring about how you got here and live instead, into saying the show says you need to forget it all because everything is dumb and nothing matters. Nothing out there matters. You're here, not out there.
Fuck the internet for what it did to this scene. Fuck the internet for completely glossing over Summer and making this scene into the face of the show.
Morty was never talking to the fans. He was talking to his sister, who he still loves deep down. Stop ignoring her, you dicks. This is what happens.

does anyone else remember that massive wait between s2 and s3 where rick was just like. stuck in space prison? because that shit was brutal
i feel like such a wet blanket in this community when i talk about my feelings on the new episodes because like. the production value is clearly high - the writing is snappy and clever, the animation is smooth and beautiful as ever, and of course the cast is always great - but it feels like something is missing and I’ve felt this way for the last few seasons. when going back and comparing an episode from season 1-2 (some s3 episodes as well) to one from one of the last 3 or so seasons, the tone and vibe feels starkly different. early seasons it doesn’t feel like they are trying to impress anyone, but later seasons suffer from this quite a bit (think full-meta jack rick or never ricking morty). this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the first few seasons had it’s own flaws and there are clearly a lot of things the creators have improved on since then, but it really does feel like a different show. the first few seasons was a sci-fi absurdist comedy sprinkled with moments of emotional depth, while the later seasons feel much more focused on drama and character development. the show just does not get as many laughs out of me as it used to and i find myself not caring about some of the newly developed/ introduced side characters (this is going to blasphemous to say but i genuinely find it hard to care about rick prime, diane, and evil morty sometimes, although to be fair EM was introduced s1). I really have enjoyed how much development specifically rick, beth, and jerry have gotten in the later seasons and I hope they continue this, but I would love to have some s1-2 vibes back in the mix.
@therealricksanchezpleasestandup it really is always a bit of a mixed bag, and I think I forget sometimes just how many writers there are on the show - there’s bound to be good and bad from every season. I think you are right that 7-8 has felt closer to 1-2 than the middle seasons - i think i liked s7 a little better but it is noticeable that they are starting to return to their roots a bit more.
it’s funny you say that R&M is your “brain shut off” show because it used to very much be that way for me too but i think after the season 2 finale where rick gets sent to space prison my brain just went “oh i care about these characters now” lol
