The ashurer adeter is a common sight across Antedeluv. Wherever there is ample open ground, these brilliant blue flying reptyls of the novun clade may be found. No larger than seven feet tall, they're not the most imposing of predators in their area.
Long legs indicative of a degree of cursoriality allow them to save energy from flying, and instead jog across the landscape to hunt down any small game they may find. When active hunting yields nothing, they scavenge as readily, using other flying scavengers as beacons to a potential meal.
At their size, they are vulnerable to predation by larger, more powerful carnivores. In response to such threats, they've evolved a neck covered in hollow spikes. When rattled, they create an impressive intimidation display. If this fails, they can provide defense in another way. If any predator attempts to secure a bite, these spikes would shatter, lacerating and puncturing the inner mouths of the attacker.
More about the freakos. This time with tassels

I got bit by the speculative biology bug after reading Project Hail Mary and have spent the past two months trying to imagine the critters that live on Erid!
Or at least that's how it started out...In order to design creatures, I decided I needed to work backwards with info in Mr. Weir's Erid lore doc to come up with organisms and systems that could've plausibly* led to the evolution of Eridians from an Astrophage seeding event. So what had started as a character design exercise turned into me spending nights puzzling how the initial airborne life of Erid would deal with high parasite loads, or which circumstances would lead to the evolution of steam-powered muscles.
So now, two months later, I present: a possible evolutionary history of life on Erid, a general map of the elevation/depth of the planet's ecosystems, and a handful of critters that would belong to the suggested clades! I could yap forever about these guys and other evolutionary possibilities, but I think for now I'll stick with this. Maybe I'll revisit and design some more critters in the future!
Huge thanks to @lenasai for being a sounding board and being patient while I complained again and again about trying to evolve muscles...you're a real one <3
*i'm a field biologist/ecologist by training, not a chemist or a physicist, so i can't vouch for if any of this is possible...just here for fun :)

Tortog Religious History Part 5:
Tog Cannibal Abominations:
Togedotogism:
This is basic cannibalism, and has been a thing on and off throughout Tog prehistory. Because of the way that Tog regeneration works, a Tog that consumes the hearts of other Togs is able to heal at a greatly accelerated rate, and gains muscle mass faster too. This comes at the cost of similarly accelerated aging and stress on all of the body's systems and functions. A healthy Tog will usually live to the age of 70-90 years old, but a Togedotog is guaranteed to not reach 40, even ignoring violent death. Togedotogism is often identifiable by a large gap between the pectoral scutes, caused by the body gaining mass faster than the scutes grow.
Togs consider blood-drinking a much different act than Togedotogism. Togs can drink the blood of a healthy/better-fed Tog to help recover from an illness or injury, and that features in a lot of folk/frontier medicine without any stigma or side-effects.
Sun Warriors:
The Sphere Cult that predated the Contogs used a special surgical procedure to fill a devout warrior with extra hearts taken from Tog sacrifices. This allowed the warrior to become extraordinarily large, strong, and durable to be used as a weapon during great battles. This is said to have given the engorged warrior an insatiable appetite, a soaring fever, and a faint inner glow. Often Sun Warriors would eventually spontaneously combust on the battlefield, but if they survived, they would be provided a massive pyre with which to euthanize themselves as their continued existence was extremely painful.
Sur-Gntog:
During the late Contog Empire, the Toggnan Surcon began building experimental corpse constructs called Sur-Gntog. They were over twice the height of the average Tog, with long limbs, and a head high out of reach of most enemy melee weapons. They had a second pair of eyes in their groin area to prevent normal-sized Togs from sneaking past or outmaneuvering them.
These were developed in secret, and even when they were finally allowed to be seen by the other Contogs, the exact nature of the monsters was closely concealed. The Toggnan Surcon made increasing numbers of Sur-Gntog during the Wet Fire plague, and eventually used this army to help them seize control of the great cities from the weakened Toggnan Panopticon.
During and after the Torist sieges, many Sur-Gntog survived and stalked the sewers and streets of the ruined cities as feral predators. Due to Torist monster slayers hunting them, and lacking any means of reproduction, the Sur-Gntog inevitably and thankfully were completely extinct within a few decades of the sieges.
Sur-Zuvtog:
During the sieges, the Toggnan Surcon began to also field less resource-intensive abominations called Sur-Zuvtog. These were simply decapitated corpses reanimated with a jar of specially cultivated nerve tissue. They obeyed the simple commands of their makers, but were very stupid, lacking even the predatory instincts of the Sur-Gntog. They would typically beeline unfamiliar organisms and bash them with their arms, which is why the Toggnan Surcon often replaced their hands with blades and spikes.
Sur-Zuvtog quickly died off without a Surtog maintaining them, and rarely became feral, but they were a common tool of the Cannibal Witches, and saw heavy use in the Witch Wars.
Sur-Gncon/ Togedocon/ Armor Hearts/ Cannibal Kings:
After the successes building the Sur-Gntog, the Toggnan Surcon secretly began to improve themselves with similar techniques. The first of these was the Sur-Gncong Cong Toggnan Surcon, who had feigned death to modify themself in secret. They revealed themself during their coup against the Toggnan Panopticon, and soon afterwards the rest of the Toggnan Surcon began undergoing their own metamorphoses.
Among the modifications they made were elongated limbs, duplicated hearts, an armored case around their hearts, metal plates in the bones of their skull, metal reinforcements on their limb bones, and alterations improving their eyesight.
Cannibal Witches:
Following the sieges of the great cities and the collapse of the Contog Empire, many Sur-Gncon escaped into the wilderness. They continued their medical experiments however they could, and many formed pacts with Togedotog, WeRo, and corrupt Torist warlords, trading dark knowledge and surgeries for protection and concealment.
Some were able to openly rule Togedotog regions for decades after the collapse of the Contog Empire. By taking advantage of the violent nature, low intelligence, and short lifespans of the Togedotogs to quickly position themselves at the head of the tribes, they could completely reorder these lesser cannibals into a zealous cult. With their medical knowledge they could organize and streamline the reproduction politics of the cult to bloom their numbers into a devastating horde. From this rebuilt power, they were able to wage the Witch Wars, trying to reconquer the Tortogs. After roughly a century of back and forth they eventually lost despite their initial intellectual advantages. They'd been able to breed massive armies of cannibals, manufacture hordes of Sur-Gntog and Sur-Zuvtog, and deny territory with brewed plagues, but they accumulated too many enemies and never were able or willing to offer a civilization that most people weren't willing to die to deny to them.
They were simply too evil to succeed in the long term, and though some were able to escape into the deep dark places of the world like they had after the fall of the Contog Empire, Torism overwhelmed Togedotogist-WeRo and they were unable to rebuild their armies. The Cannibal Witches were hunted down and destroyed throughout the next few centuries.

beautiful boys! so well done :D
The tanin soaked waterways of central and eastern Allun hold host to many dangers. Reptyls and mammyls alike share these waters, and they themselves have fearsome predators among their ranks. Yet, fisks still hold their own in this menagerie of riverine predators. The hamerias are one such example.
The elongated bauplan of the hamerias is greatly suited to navigating the cramp spaces of their habitat, aided further by muscular digited fins. The many barbles on their snouts bear many taste receptors, and coupled with an acute sense of smell, are able to locate prey in the murkiest depths. Sharp bladed teeth would make short work of most prey, but their greatest asset is electrogenesis.
An overwhelming majority of their bodies are made that of their tail, with a sizeable portion of the musculature having been converted into electrical organs. It is with these organs that they are able to punch well above their bodyweight, subduing prey that their jaws alone cannot kill, and repelling great leviathanosaurs like the daemons from predating them.
The largest of the hamerias, the allunian greater hameria rivals many of its contemporary predators, both sexes being around 80 feet long from snout to tail.
Size aside, they are noteworthy in being the best parents of their genus. A curiously monogamous species, both male and females guard their brood of three thousand eggs with their lives, viciously driving away any animal they register as a threat to their young. And while all other species stop their guardianship after the eggs have hatched, the allunian greater hamerias extend their protection up to several weeks after. In this time, the larvae would have undergone a brief but incredibly fast growth spurt, increasing in size ten fold from when they hatched.
While other hamerias hedge their bets on numbers alone, and rely on this rapid and intense growth for survival, the allunian greater hamerias doubled down on their parental behavior as to ensure more young make it pass this volatile period of their lives and thus have better chances overall.
