The self-harm? The frustrated little punches? The fucking religious PSYCHOSIS? Do you realize how bad it has to be to experience that? How fucking broken, stressed, desperate? Cutting through the suit/skin that we all agree felt practiced? Aware?

I’m sorry, but I really hated the Madelyn scene. It was important to him and the plot, but I can’t watch it. I can’t watch it knowing that we are having a tender moment then, that will be turned into a joke later or worse—be meaningless in his death. (Because I said it many times, if he dies I think it would make sense to bring this vulnerability back for that moment) and it was meaningless.

His death felt soulless, empty. Ashley suddenly calling him a “unwell man”? Now you say that? Now that you need an excuse, and now that he is dead and won’t threaten you.

If Ashely noticed, so did Edgar. Barbara admitted it too. They did it on purpose. They were aware this was a MENTAL ISSUE. And they did nothing.

Are we ALWAYS just going to keep killing unstable villains? Can we break the cycle? Can we make it tender? Yes, he is unredeemable but he is also the one who suffered to be who he is. It wasn’t a choice, it was expected to happen. What else did Vought think will happen? Why couldn’t we see him kill Edgar before he died? Burn the tower down, his penthouse. Every painting, his father in the pod, the pubs jar, everything. Why couldn’t his death also be the death of what hurt him? A personal manifesto.

I know it's just a show but seeing the memorials Vought YT put up for Firecracker, The Deep, fucking Oh-Father, but not Homelander-- because why would they, he tried to make everyone his disciple and kill everyone who didn't want to be-- it just made me sick.

His mental illness and severe trauma is played for laughs. He is always a tool, a weapon, an idol or a monster-- never a fucking person. Even in death he continues to be a tool for the Vought machine. They use his death as a narrative of rebirth.

He's probably been dissected and thrown away. They're probably using his DNA right now to put another screaming child in a cage.

He helps arrange for Soldier Boy to get turned over to the Russians. This leads to the creation of the depowering blast, which later conveniently results in Kimiko getting it. And for further convenience, Stan also gets Soldier Boy back but safely contained this time.

Kimiko is only a supe because Homelander trafficked V to produce supervillains to help him help Madelyn, Stan's protégé. This also helped Stan in his attempts at selling the idea of V supersoldiers to the military.

There were some hiccups along the way (V going public, Homelander discovering Ryan), but all proved to only be temporary setbacks as the finale showed. Even Victoria Neuman's death was acceptable collateral. Stan adopted her to serve his ends after all and when she became inconvenient, he was fine selling her out to the Boys to save his own skin. You win some, you lose some. And Stan won so big in the end that it's as if he lost nothing at all. I bet Sameer and Zoe joined back up with him too because the writers adore Gus Stan. The identity of the particular chess pieces Stan had to sacrifice to get what he wanted did not phase him, as he is unchanged and he is right back on top.

Stan is freed from his biggest problem now that that botched experiment is eliminated and firmly back to serving his interests in death, purely as a patsy now. He can point to Ashley and Victoria as well should anyone think to examine his actions (though no one will), because they were the ones on television. They were the ones embroiled in the conspiracy, not Stan -- he was framed, see, and he promises that Vought will be better back under him. That's good enough for the Boys and President Singer it seems.

The worst part for me is that this really went so very well because Ryan worked exactly as Stan wanted him to eventually. A contingency in case Homelander went off the rails. Ryan performed just as Vought wanted him to in the end, as he was the deciding factor in the Oval Office fight. Homelander is off the board and his secrets (Stan's darkest secrets, evidence of Vought's great evil) died with him.

You all get it.

They should have shown that the Boys (or at least Hughie and Annie) were continuing the fight, together with the Gen V cast maybe. Or should have leaned into making the ending bleak. Make Stan becoming Vought's CEO again central to the falling action. Show that the Vought machine is back in motion, don't just have it mentioned briefly. Have Stan onscreen being smug and acting as if everything is coming together nearly exactly to plan.

There were options here: a happy ending where Homelander and everything and everyone that lead to him is gone, an open ending of the Boys continuing the fight, or a bleak ending. They failed to do any of those options properly because they: 1) like Giancarlo Esposito, 2) want to promote more spinoffs, nevermind giving The Boys a good conclusion, so Vought needs to exist (because they lack the creativity to write a post Vought story), and 3) decided that they couldn't bear to kill any more of the Boys but didn't want to keep using those characters either.
