In recent years, lacrosse has gained increasing recognition on the global stage. In 2018, the sport received provisional recognition from the International Olympic Committee, and in 2021, it achieved full recognition. This milestone paves the way for lacrosse's potential return to the Olympic Games.

The research also includes developing a new process for manufacturing these rods, hot wrapping, which reduces manufacturing time and cost. The project will take 12 months, beginning with the time it takes to source materials to perform tests on the rods.

Experienced players have variations on the overhead shot, including sidearm, underhand, and wraparound techniques. The latter is a challenging but highly effective strategy for taking possession of the ball behind the net. Rensselaer’s School of Engineering’s most unique program is the Design, Innovation, and Society (DIS) dual major. Alongside the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, students take seven semesters of integrated coursework about core mechanical engineering principles and product design. Students also learn the marketing side of product design and how to use software like drawing and prototyping suites to create and market products that solve problems at all scale levels.

A December 2019 graduate of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Clifford (Cliff) Kigar earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering while also participating in athletics. In addition to playing in RPI‘s varsity lacrosse program, Cliff Kigar served as a coach at Haymakers Lacrosse starting in 2015. Haymakers Lacrosse exposes high school students to collegiate and professional lacrosse play by giving them access to a college-level coaching staff. Located in Columbus, Ohio, Haymakers Lacrosse welcomes high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in playing lacrosse in college and beyond. Hosting students from 20 local high school lacrosse programs, Haymakers Lacrosse hosts a summer competition schedule and fall training sessions. The organization prides themselves on their lack of conflicts of interests with the high schools that provide their pool of students. It also rewards athletes based solely on their performance. Haymakers Lacrosse distinguishes itself by using coaches with collegiate lacrosse experience and offering high exposure to colleges’ lacrosse recruiters. Students benefit from college-level instruction and workouts. They compete against the best teams in their age groups and meet regularly with collegiate lacrosse recruiters nationwide. Haymakers Lacrosse helps place students in universities that will give them both a quality academic and athletic experience, where they can play at their best.

Clifford (Cliff) Kigar attended the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. In that time, Cliff Kigar earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and received the Rensselaer Medal. RPI promotes the responsible use of technology across all disciplines and prepares its students to do so in whatever career they choose. As of 2021, five different schools comprise RPI, covering the areas of architecture, engineering, humanities, arts, social sciences, management, science and more. Their student body in the 2020-21 academic year consisted of 7,616 students, 6,283 undergraduates and 1,333 graduates. As of 2021, the campus hosted 449 full-time faculty members, with a 14-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. As of 2021, Rensselaer’s School of Engineering contains seven departments and offers 11 unique bachelors degrees, each with a corresponding masters and doctoral degree. They also host the design, innovation, and society program, a dual major in collaboration with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. During the seven- to eight-semester program, students learn the technical aspects of engineering and the social and cultural aspects of product design and marketing.

Cliff Kigar serves as coach at Haymakers Lacrosse, an elite lacrosse club, in Columbus, Ohio. Moreover, Clifford Kigar is a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. Cliff Kigar also supports the advocacy of JDRF, which was previously known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. An organization that funds type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy, JDRF brings together dedicated people to raise money by walking, volunteering, and making monetary contributions. Their joint efforts are directed at helping patients with T1D live safe, healthy, and threat-free lives. More specifically, the funds raised at JDRF One Walk events go towards funding research on the disease. The research that the organization funds focuses on the development of a cure for T1D as well as the prevention and management of T1D and its complications. Some of JDRF’s goals include ushering in a future in which artificial pancreases, beta cell replacement, and glucose control are readily available options for T1D patients.

Clifford Kigar is a student athlete at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. An exemplary student and lacrosse player, Cliff Kigar has received the Rensselaer Medal and was named a US Lacrosse All-American player in 2015. Outside of his schooling, Cliff Kigar enjoys sailing and belongs to the Alum Creek Sailing Association (ACSA), a recreational club that works to promote the sport. A community organization, the ACSA has a long history, beginning in 1982 under the direction of three catamaran sailors who wanted to foster a lively sailing competition within their area. Since then, the association has grown to include over 200 members, and it hosts races throughout the year. The ACSA is not only for experienced sailors. In addition to its competitions and member events, the organization hosts classes in the basics of sailing. Open to the public, the adults-only courses take place largely on the water, using 22- to 27-foot sailboats as teaching tools. Upon graduation, students are invited to ACSA social activities, including a party to celebrate their success. Sailing classes are held four times a year. Before joining the institute, Cliff Kigar attended Olentangy High School, where he graduated with honors and also received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. The President’s Education Awards Program was established in 1983 to recognize deserving students. The program is a personal honor from the President of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of Education. Every year, the program recognizes thousands of students across the country who have demonstrated distinguished efforts and met challenging educational standards. One of the awards offered is the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. Honoring academic achievement, the awardees are primarily chosen by the principal of the participating school. To be eligible for the award, students from either elementary, middle, or high school should meet the following criteria: - Attain a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, A on a letter scale, or 90 on a 100 scale. - Schools that use different grading standards can establish a standard that reflects a 90 percent or higher academic achievement. A school can also consider activities that require students to demonstrate initiative, intelligence, leadership, or integrity. In addition to either of the two above requirements, students are required to show exceptional performance on state tests and nationally-normed achievement tests or be recommended by a teacher or staff member for exceptional achievement in one of the courses forming the school’s core curriculum.

A graduate of Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, Ohio, Cliff Kigar was a 2015 U.S. Lacrosse All American player and a recipient of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. In addition to his academic and athletic accomplishments, Cliff Kigar participated in charitable events such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to End Type 1 Diabetes. Established more than 45 years ago, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) funds research into treatments and cures for Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that affects millions of children and adults worldwide. Type 1 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the pancreas does not produce insulin or produces inadequately low amounts of insulin, resulting in the body’s inability to regulate blood sugar levels. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes must carefully monitor their blood glucose levels and inject insulin several times a day, in addition to managing their diet and exercising. While there is no known cause or cure for Type 1 diabetes, organizations such as the JDRF have raised more than $2 billion to fund life-improving breakthroughs for individuals with the disease.

Clifford (Cliff) Kigar is a mechanical engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. A lacrosse player and sports enthusiast, Cliff Kigar makes time outside of his studies and sports obligations to support JDRF events. JDRF is global nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting awareness of type 1 diabetes, as well as raising funds for crucial research pertaining to the disorder. In place for nearly 50 years, JDRF is the sole organization focused exclusively on type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that is now known to affect both adults and children. JDRF provides ample opportunity for volunteers and sponsors to become involved in the search for a cure. Some of these opportunities concern donations, and others are more hands-on, such as the organization's premier fundraising event, the JDRF One Walk. The walk takes place across the globe each year, with over 900,000 participants in the United States alone. In the United States, the walks usually occur during the spring and fall months and range from 1 to 5 miles in length. While walk participants are encouraged to fundraise as part of their participation in the event, there are no fundraising minimums or registration fees.

Cliff Kigar has been active in several outdoor sports and activities for many years, including his very successful ongoing lacrosse career. He also enjoys sailing for leisure and competitively, and is a member of the Alum Creek Sailing Association (ACSA). The Alum Creek Sailing Association, which consists of numerous members, both individuals and families, of varying ages and professions, and regularly convenes on the Alum Creek Lake north of Columbus, Ohio. Among the services the club offers to members and well as the general public of Columbus are basic sailing classes for youth ages 12 to 18 as well as adults. Adult classes are offered to beginner-level sailors using 22 to 27 foot sailboats. Volunteer instructors teach basic lessons to students of any age or gender, and all participants receive an invitation to various upcoming ACSA social activities where they can practice their new skills and associate with fellow sailors. Participants also receive books and materials to supplement their in-person instruction. Adult classes cost $150 per person, and are held on Thursdays in the spring, and Thursdays and Sundays in the summer and fall. Youth lessons are held as part of a youth summer sailing program, which was established in 2006. The program consists of basic classes designed to instill confidence in new young sailors and improve their boat handling skills. Hunter 140 sailboats are used for youth lessons, and an instructor stays aboard each boat to ensure safety. The minimum age to participate in the youth summer program is 11 years old.

A student at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, Clifford “Cliff” Kigar plays on the school’s lacrosse team and studies as a mechanical engineering major. In a recent press release, JDRF announced that it is expanding a research partnership with Sanofi US Services, Inc., to develop new insulin therapies for individuals with type 1 diabetes. The research collaboration is specifically focused on developing glucose-responsive insulins (GRIs), which have the potential to more effectively manage the blood sugar highs and lows experienced by many individuals with diabetes who are dependent on insulin. As part of the collaboration, JDRF and Sanofi will commit $4.6 million to four separate research organizations currently working to develop GRI therapies. JDRF selected the projects that will be funded, and its scientific team will work closely with project leaders to help ensure that their research leads to human clinical trials.                            

Cliff Kigar is a mechanical engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an alumnus lacrosse player for Olentangy High School. With a lifelong dedication to lacrosse, Cliff Kigar has chosen to support the charitable organization Lacrosse the Nations (LtN), which strives to improve the lives of children through the sport as a physical education or after-school program. Lacrosse the Nations offers programs in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the United States. The LtN program located at Club Hope in Villa Guadalupe, Managua, Nicaragua, caters to a displaced population that formerly lived in the La Chureca housing projects before their sudden clearing in 2012. Club Hope was founded due to this clearing to operate as an unofficial school including preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school tutoring, music classes, a feeding program, and, thanks to Lacrosse the Nations, lacrosse games. LtN uses its Life Skills curriculum to teach children in Villa Guadalupe good health and life skills through the sport of Lacrosse. Lacrosse the Nations of Villa Guadalupe has also hired and trained two Nicaraguan lacrosse coaches and has provided both of them with the opportunity to pursue higher education through the LtN Coaches Scholarship Program.
