I had to take an author photo in which I look like a person you trust to string sentences together and, possibly, a functioning narrative.
This was not that picture, but I'm putting it here because it's far more accurate than the one I sent in.
I need all these badges please

When ants die, a few days later they emit oleic acid, which tells the living ants to dispose of their corpse.
A myrmecologist named Ed Wilson discovered this and dropped the chemical on a living ant. It was immediately carried off, despite the fact that it was still moving, and clearly not dead.
āIāM GETTING BETTERā
Bring out your dead. Eh, close enough.
IM NOT YET DEAD SIR
You left out the part where the ant, believing HERSELF to be dead, stayed in self imposed exile in the ant graveyard until the acid wore off and she realized she was not supposed to be in the ant graveyard.
@finite-experience, this seems like the sort of thing youād like to see
Ant 1: To the ant graveyard with you
Ant 2: But Iām not dead
Ant 1: You smell dead
Ant 2: Fair enough
Ant 1: āI thought you were dead.ā
Ant 2, after acid wears off: āI got better.ā
Ant 2, returning to the colony: i lived bitch
The last two months I've been working on the edits for the sequel to The Shape of Monsters, and it's getting closer to its final form.
Most of this round has been cutting A Million Points of Light down to a leaner, sleeker size, and fine tuning the details.
This morning I sent the edits in to Audible, and hopefully there will just be a few more passes before Omari Douglas goes into the studio to record.
Until then, have some art I made of Vaira Aubrey

Yay, some excellent news for the day!
The Shape of Monsters has been shortlisted for a Speakie (audio book award) šššš
Definitely helps that voice actor Omari Douglas is fantastic
this is hilarious. imagine running late for a friendās wedding and you end up at a complete strangerās instead. imagine thinking you got away with it for four years until a podcaster hunts you down and it ends up on the news
This is a fanfic premise looking for an OTP.
many people see āpedophilesā as a type of villain to wish infinite angry death upon, as opposed to recognizing CSA as a preventable form of abuse. the former buys into moral panic and punitive justice; the latter is actionable, helpful, and much needed
when i went to conservative christian hell school, all we heard about was the evil scary men who wanted to snatch us up on the street. we learned about csa through strange, coded language. we were not taught how to talk about our bodies, and we were not taught what sex was. eventually, i was groomed and assaulted. so were an alarming number of my peers, often by teachers and religious leaders
then, as an adult, i got the opportunity to work at a summer camp. we developed an actionable plan to prevent campers from being alone with adult volunteers; we advocated for all of our campers to learn appropriate body part language; we led discussions about boundaries and consent; we answered questions about sex with honesty, care, and age-appropriate detail. and it was safe! the one time we identified shady behavior, there were so many safety nets and protocols in place that it never became a real issue.
so, having been in both situations, itās frustrating to see 46387 threads a day of people angrily, viciously tearing apart the mere idea of a pedophile without ever stopping to ask āhey, what can we do about this? in real life? like, what are the advocates advocating for right now?ā
i hate to break it to you, but 18+ daddy kink genshin yaoi (sorry idk iām out of touch) isnāt the issue here, and itās kind of silly and terminally online to pretend that it is. i would argue that adult-only erotica servers that block minors arenāt as big of a threat as, you know, āminor safe!! we are very safe for minors :) and we HATE the mean nasty scary peopleā communities that have a piss poor accountability system and no real mechanism for preventing abuse. thereās a huge difference between āweird gross thing that grosses me outā and āunsafe situation,ā and the latter is far more worth emphasizing
At least the adult-only erotic servers that block minors have a basic sense of safety, saying "Oh holy SHIT, no, we are NOT exposing a minor to this."
Meanwhile, several people in my circles have gotten in hot water for making what you refer to as "āminor safe!! we are very safe for minors :) and we HATE the mean nasty scary peopleā communities that have a piss poor accountability system and no real mechanism for preventing abuse" servers.
And I'm not even getting into the question of "what if the lack of safety in that second thing is intentional"
Another thing to note is that we use the word "pedophile" for two things THAT ARE ACTUALLY QUITE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER.
Actual pedophilia, the clinical definition, is a paraphilic mental disorder defined by sexual and romantic attraction to prepubescent* children. Some pedophiles are aware this is wrong. Others may genuinely believe children "love them back" or that there is no major cognitive difference between an adult and a child. Some pedophiles will act on their attraction. Some will not.
Now we move onto the act we often call pedophilia: child sexual abuse. THE VAST MAJORITY OF CSA PERPETRATORS ARE NOT PEDOPHILES. They attack children because they're easy targets and to feel power. Some are sexually aroused by the idea of inflicting pain on a nonconsenting** person, known as sexual sadism disorder. In their everyday lives they may have adult partners and be attracted only to adults.
When we do not differentiate these things, we make life harder for pedophiles who would like to not hurt children, and easier for child sexual abusers who are not pedophiles.
Differentiate. Teach. It's important.
*this is the clinical definition. Given that these days we have kids with vaginas who start menstruating at nine or ten years old but who haven't yet started to undergo significant breast or hair growth, I'm going to tweak it slightly to "prepubescent or reasonably perceived to be prepubescent."
**the "nonconsensual" part is a necessary part of the diagnosis. The DSM-V differentiates between normal BDSM play and "no, you need some fucking help."
And of course there's all the people using "pedophile" as a catchall description for whoever they don't like this month. I honestly want to retire the word entirely, in favor of more precise terms that don't hit so many people in the "brain: off; target: locked" button.
A hill I will die on is that colloquially collapsing the distinction between "pedophile" and "predator" has had a genuinely negative impact, both on our ability to protect children and young adults, and on community discourse. I understand why it happened - pedophile is clearly the stronger term, and when it comes to, say, a fortysomething adult attempting to date someone under eighteen, we want the word we use for that to reflect our disgust - but the end result has been a massive spike in highly reactive, deeply puritan anxiety around acknowledging normal teen sexuality, and it's causing genuine problems. Because the big, vital distinction is that, whereas it is never developmentally appropriate for a pre-pubescent child to have any form of sexual contact with another person, it very much is developmentally appropriate for teens, and particularly older teens, to be doing that. So while this doesn't mean that it's always advisable for specific teens to be doing specific things, the fact that they might be doing them is not, in and of itself, wrong - and particularly not when their partner is around their own age. But when we start casually referring to, say, a twenty-year-old having consensual sex with a sixteen-year-old as pedophilic rather than predatory, we are implicitly suggesting that it's fundamentally wrong for that teen to want sex at all, let alone to actually have it - and that simply will not keep anyone safe. Instead, it creates a sense of shame, fear and uncertainty around teenage sexuality; as though anything they might be doing must, of necessity, be done in secret. And worse, it can lead to them thinking, for instance, that a seventeen-year-old being sexually attracted to someone a year or two younger constitutes pedophilia - which is, to be clear, completely fucking untrue. But that's what a lot of teens and young adults have absorbed from the way the term is used: that a pedophile is anyone who's sexually attracted to a teenager, even if they themselves are also a teen. Which means, among other things, that when these same young people encounter art that features fictional teens in sexual contexts - even age-appropriate, positive, consensual encounters, let alone anything darker - they have no moral framework for what that means other than pedophilia. There are - and I say this with zero exaggeration - teenagers legitimately and full-throatedly accusing other teens of being pedophiles for having read or written mildly horny fanfic about fictional teens. It's absolute madness, and judging by the current state of subcultural play, it's only getting worse. But when you create this level of anxiety around sex? You make people vulnerable to exploitation, and that's especially true of young people. Because if someone feels that their desires are shameful, and they confide those desires to another person - an internet stranger, a peer from school, a youth pastor, a friend's older sibling - then they're handing that person the ability to harm them, not because those desires are actually wrong, but because the threat of disclosure can now be leveraged against them. Which is - forever, for all time - a favoured tactic of predators: to make their victims believe that speaking up will see them suffer more than if they just endure their abuse in silence. And right now, far too many people are reluctant to so much as mention teens and sex in the same breath, even for safeguarding purposes, for fear of being branded pedophiles - because why would you even think about that gross, icky stuff in the first place, unless you yourself are gross and icky? Why would you want to write a story about CSA if you don't enjoy hurting children? Why would you exclude minors from your adult-oriented discord server if you're a safe person to be around? Why would you bother to draw a distinction between pedophilia and predatory behaviour unless you're a a pedophile looking to justify yourself? Why would you think it's okay for teens to have sex unless you want to have sex with teens?
I'm really looking forward to attending World Fantasy Con in Brighton at the end of October.
My first international con was WFC Brighton in 2014, and it was so much fun - I met wagon-loads of fantastic new people (some of whom were later partly responsible for my move to Scotland) plus finally got to meet friends I had known only online for over a decade.
So for me, this con feels like a celebration of how long I've been doing this, and all the incredible friends I've made along the way.
I plan to be in full party mode - as much as one can be these days. š
Not sure if I'll be on any panels yet but I'm not overly concerned about that - I prefer fewer panels as I get quite bad anxiety about them, before and after. I'm there for the good times.
Oh, and I remembered, just before posting, this will be the first time I have a short story (Godskin) up for a World Fantasy award, so I decided to splash out on the banquet ticket. Haaah, I literally forgot (the chance of it winning is...remote... hence the lack of memory)
I'm editing Monsters Book 2 (A Million Points of Light) and yes, i made myself cut those scenes, but I still have them to read all alone in my room when I'm sad.
