hi here’s a cool bird I betcha didn’t know existed, ✨the wallcreeper✨
it literally looks like a monarch butterfly it’s so cute
“Congratulations for your historical proximity to me.”
Our August special episode is out, and you guessed it.... ✨🩸✨🩸✨
This one features @hellotailor AND @flourish (and @elizabethminkel as usual lol):
Much like the opening pages of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat, the new season of the show formerly known as Interview with the Vampire immediately punches you in the face with a wild new tone—one perhaps best summarized as LESTAT. Fresh off recapping TVL for Fansplaning, Gavia Baker-Whitelaw joins Elizabeth and Flourish to discuss the season. Topics covered include that notable tone shift, audience expectations and the writers’ somewhat combative approach to storytelling, and specific elements like Gabriella’s presentation, Lestat’s music, and the Regina storyline. And, as you probably could have guessed, despite promising non-book-reader Gav not to talk too much about The Vampire Chronicles, Elizabeth and Flourish continue to do so, with a focus on the season’s unorthodox approach to adaptation.
Special episodes are available to Benefactor- and Champion-tier subscribers, or you can purchase one-off access to any individual ep. As always, our audio comes with a full human-written transcript!
(If you're interested in becoming a subscriber but are a student, educator, unemployed, lower income, or any other reason you might need a discount, email us at [email protected] for the affordable-tier codes! We offer these for our Benefactor level, too. 😘)
This conversation is close to an hour and a half long, and I still feel like we only just scratched the surface. It was a real pleasure to talk about this with Flourish *and* Gav, who come at the show from different angles and both have such smart things to say!

Blood farms and custom guitars: TVL production designer Andres Cubillan shares insights into the season’s most memorable setpieces.
As Lestat’s childhood flashbacks move through his adolescence to young adulthood, we’re given hint after hint that the family has fallen on hard times, mirrored by his father’s increasing infirmity, and the rest of his family succumbing to various illnesses. “We see less staff in the house,” production designer Andres Cubillan explains. “We see the food getting simpler. Even the china on the table. We go from a very sort of elaborate multi-piece setting, you know, crystal glassware, silverware, and that starts getting reduced. So you start feeling like they’re really impoverished in their sort of ridiculous aristocracy.”
“They’re not going to give [Lestat] some large bedroom. It’s going to be sort of awkward in size. I’ve spoken about the tile floor and the fact that it’s a material that would have been used for servants’ quarters or kitchens.” Lestat is a second-class citizen in his own home, and the images decorating his walls make a further statement about the violent undercurrents of his childhood. “The mural work on the walls, it was a play on the tropes of little boys’ rooms—the trains and the boats, and that heteronormative ideal for a little boys’ room in that era.” But instead of boats or scenes of boyhood adventures, Lestat’s bed is surrounded by “images of war and massacres and conquests,” creating a nightmarish backdrop to the only private space he has in the house.
