Once Taki and Mitsuha realize the body swaps are occurring regularly, they start leaving each other diary entries and rules/warnings, to try to make it easier for the other to blend in and make less trouble. The phone entries are always color coded so you can see at a glance who writes what- Taki is always in blue, and Mitsuha always in pink/red.

So I thought I’d do something a little different and translate the texts, notebook and diary entries from KNNW. While it’s clear enough who is writing because they’ve color coded the phone entries, I wanted to do this for a couple reasons. 

1. I’m a huge fan of epistolary as a shippy trope (And then they were pen pals!) and just as a writing technique in general, as you can show how your character thinks and feels in text that is basically dialogue directed to a specific person. While the audience can “hear” them seemingly talking to each other in the film, as the voice actors read aloud the key points of the diary entries and warnings, they were actually communicating only through the notes and sharpie scrawls they left the other. 

2. There is extra information coded in there that you will miss if you can’t read Japanese. 

3. This meta totally counts towards the language/translation square for Trope Bingo. LOL So here is the content of those extra written messages, in case you wanted a little more depth to the movie. Feel free to message me with corrections- I think my Japanese is pretty decent, but I’m not a native Japanese speaker/reader.

It seems a bit foolish logically- "Why wouldn't he just keep walking forward?" "Why didn't Taki just write his name on her hand?"

But it's because in a moment of immense emotions, feeling relief yet great sorrow and stress- when Orpheus is able to take Eurydice home yet is uncertain if she will actually be allowed to return to the surface, when Taki finally gets to meet Mitsuha in the midst of trying to save her town and her life-

Attend a parade!

Rip up paving stones to build a barricade!

Use guerilla tactics to counter the forces of the national guard!
