This is absolutely lovely.
reasons why you need to watch black panther
iâve already seen it twice đŠ
I just really loved Black Panther immensely. It talked about serious issues, was clearly a black film, but also had some lighthearted moments. There was not a cheesy moment. And yes to all the beautiful melanin! The deep shades of brown in this film were astounding and donât be mad when I audition as an extra for the next film.
âSusie was the kind of chick that youâd really want to be. Susie came at a time when I donât think we were seeing a lot of little black girls in animation or a lot of little black girls on TV, period. I think she moved a lot of people and made us feel good about ourselves. She was articulate, she was kind, she was talented, she was smart.â -Cree Summer, the voice of Susie Carmichael on Rugrats. In honor of Black History Month, our Nick archives team uncovered one of the original designs for Susie, one of the first African-American characters in Nick Animation, who made her debut on January 10th, 1993 with the episode âMeet the Carmichaelsâ in the clip above!
Susie was everything!!!

"These microaggressions add up, and others models who aren't of women of color don't have to face it."
I grew up in Senegal, where more than 50 percent of the women bleach their skin, and skin bleaching is a huge deal. I grew up seeing my cousins and my aunts using it. My cousin pressured me and they wanted me to use skin bleaching products but my sister said youâre not using it because a lot of them experience the damages [from it].Earlier this year, a friend of mine who works in the fashion industry told me that I had a commercial look, and asked me to model a turtleneck for a segment on a local NYC fashion news network. A few months later I was invited back to model, but this time it was for a major national morning show. I was thrilled. I never thought that someone like meâwith dark skin and thick thighsâcould ever âmodel.â I counted down the days.
I arrived on set as instructed: makeup free and with my hair straightânot curly. The makeup artist on set shot me a look of annoyance. She had no color in her makeup set to match me and used foundation way lighter than my complexion, which made my skin look ashy. She swiped a bright pink lipstick on my full lips, to make me âpop,â she said. I didnât feel like I was poppinâ at all. I felt like I was being made up to look like a clown.
I knew that my one painful, personal experience modeling couldnât be an isolated one.
So I spoke with eight black models about their experiences in the industry, the microaggressions theyâve experienced, the ways in which they have been made to feel less-than. I asked each model to speak specifically to that body part or feature that once made them feel insecure but is now their biggest motivator.

âAwkwardâ And âInsecureâ Get To The Root Of Writer Issa Raeâs Humor
Issa Raeâs new HBO series is Insecure. Today she talked to Fresh Airâs Terry Gross about what made her want to write for television:Â
âWhen I was younger I felt like I wanted to be a part of the writersâ rooms. I wanted to write my own show. I remember when the show Cosby came out, which was a different iteration of The Cosby Show, and I sent in a script for that. I remember going to my first live taping of a show in L.A. when we moved back when I was 11. [It] was Moesha, and I got to be in a live studio audience and watch what I say was the last regular black girl we had on TV. âŚ
I won a copy of the script for that episode and it ⌠is tattered, because I would always use that as a template to write scripts. So when I wrote my Cosby spec script, when I wrote my original spec script it was always based on that format. ⌠For me it just felt doable, it was like, Oh my gosh, I have the key, I have the secret of how itâs done and the formula is at my fingertips.â
I have been a fan since awkward black girl. Glad she is doing big things!
