Oh my gosh having an out trans actor play a canon trans character made me indescribably happy- I used to watch west side story on a loop as a kid and having that added to the remake was just a phenomenal thing and so important personally and for the trans community!!! What wasn’t in the original that they added that you loved?

It breaks my heart that "West Side Story" isn't having the opening weekend it deserves

Oh "West Side Story" was amazing! I don't think I can remember a movie musical where the camera moved in such perfect rhythm with the dancers. And I loved how they added the backdrop of Robert Moses' not so subtle racist displacement of whole neighborhoods for his project to emphasize how pointless the feud between the Jets and the Sharks is. Robert Moses was NYC's biggest urban planner in post WWII and he was very controversial due to favoring automobiles over public transits and how many minority neighborhoods he swiped away for his projects or places popular amongst the working class - he's responsible for the destruction of the classic Coney Island amusement parks His legacy is basically the reason why there's been no big changes to NYC in the 21st Century because he had so much power and displaced so many people that nobody wanted a repeat of him, which is why any proposals never seem to get anywhere
