Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
I listened to the pilot episode of Witchpunk by @citeogs and it's really good. Some specific things I liked:
The concept of the truth checker playing behind the news was really interesting, super neat way to convey the dystopia of the setting.
The action sequence in the first episode was enthralling. Action is one of the hardest things to do well in an audio medium, and this show nailed it. Itās immersive, intense, and introduces the worldbuilding in a really natural way.
Speaking of the worldbuilding, Witchpunk's worldbuilding is so cool. I can't wait to learn more about this setting!
I also particularly like the sci-fi/fantasy trope of a fight happening simultaneously in the physical world and a digital/mental/psychic world (the Murderbot books do this very well for example), and Witchpunk nails that.
Highly recommend checking out this show. The Firefly vibes are also right up my alley, and the first episode totally sold me.

Science Fiction Audio Dramas About Couriers Who Just Can't Catch a Break Starter Pack
The Strange Case of Starship Iris: Violet Liu's ship blows up, and she's rescued by a band of smugglers who become embroiled in the mystery of what happened. This series is complete, although I'm still in the first season.
InCo: Nova is just trying to make a delivery when she ends up rescuing a prince. This one is complete, and again, I'm still in the first season.
WitchPunk: In post-apocalyptic North America, a team is trying to make a delivery only to discover there's something strange about their cargo. The first season is airing right now, with Episode 4 releasing today.
Under the Electric Stars: After a delivery gone wrong, Reyes gets mixed up with a revolutionary group while trying to fix their bot. This one is on going, and I only just started it.
This week the crew of the Strega learn how screwed they are⦠and then things get even worse.

Watched John Carpenterās The Thing for the first time tonight. No bloat, just story and paranoia. And yes, Iāll probably be having nightmares tonight. CGI had nothing on 1980ās practical effects.
The world of Witchpunk is in some ways us ten minutes into the future. Itās āheat spikesā now but heat bombs are the real risk, and weāll be hearing about them in an upcoming episode!

Halfway through season one already of Witchpunk! The amount of work that goes into it and then bam! itās out in the neon streets, all grown up and hacking corps.
Witchpunk Episode 3 āOur Lady Of The Wiresā is out now! Aliceās act of altruism last episode is not without its consequences. The crew hole up for the night as Hurricane Zoe settles in. The thing in the hold begins to stir. Come listen wherever you get your podcasts!

AD folks, have you heard of Appalachia: A Fallout 76 Story? It's a spinoff of CHAD: A Fallout 76 Story, but it stands on it's own (yeah there are references to CHAD and sometimes character crossovers, but you can listen to A76 w/o prior pod knowledge). Likewise, you'll enjoy the show a little more if you've played the game, but it is not essential! :)
We're 10 episodes in and now you have two options! This is a great time to catch up, as we are halfway through season one orrr you can listen to our Not-A-Clip-Show episode A Look Back where characters recap what has happened in a fun way! Our next episode is recording now, and it'll be ready for your ears next month.
A76 is part narration, part action, part silly, part told-in-the-future-and-the-present perspectives. It's Matt Bartlett & Phil Lonidier's first time showrunning and they're crushing it. I play Kitt, a sardonic Pip-Boy (yes, a talking, sentient Pip-Boy) and the whole cast are a delight. The show centres on Rabbit and Xander, and you meet the other colourful characters along the way.
Add it to your list! ā¢ļø Available everywhere you get your podcasts ;)

Happy Audio Drama Sunday!!! Iām on vacation so I feel great. I hope there is rest for you as well! And if not rest, at least we have audio drama.
š Eelerās Choice is back!!!! @eelerschoice comes out the gate for season two with a āØDevastating Ecological Problem⨠and honestly, this is almost a tougher problem to deal with than a plague or a giant sea monster. Thereās something so frustrating about seeing a problem, knowing itās a problem, knowing how to fix it, and you are the only one concerned. I feel for Merry. Iām also very proud of Blethin out here, acting like a real father figure this season and everything.
ā£ļø Witchpunk: A Cyberpunk Story is a new show from @citeogs that absolutely rules. It does everything I love in a cyberpunk show: sets up weird science, follows a bunch of random nobodies who have the horrible misfortune of becoming important, uses media as a worldbuilding masterclass, and then refuses to explain everything to youākeep up or shut up, nerd. I really like this show. The action sequences are extremely cool, and the way they obfuscate math and magic is SWEET. Check it out!
š¼ Folks. Highgate Wood. @palimpsestproductions posted the entire series on its own feed, and I knew going in it was going to be good. Like, cāmon, itās Palimpsest. But itās SO GOOD. The plotline is spooky, and because itās a faux documentary, they donāt have a cast list posted, so itās kind of fun playing Spot That British VA. And the MUSIC. Itās so excellent. Iām only halfway through and the mystery has me by the throat. Everyone go listen to it and then listen to their entire album that they wrote. So much love in this show.
Time for me to go hang out with some friends. Bye everyone!
