πππ THEY PLAY THESE GAMES THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO SEE
JESTER FIDGETS WITH the letter in his hands, briefly wondering if he is doing the right thing; perhaps Evelyn was right, and he was making a mistake. He quickly snuffs out any doubt; he has long since passed the time to be skeptical. This was how things needed to be done to ensure their safety, and if that meant nipping Pierrot's obsession in the bud before it festered into something more, then so be it.
HEARING A FAINT jingling of bells signalling Pierrot's arrival, Jester turns to face him and greets him with a smile. "Pierrot, my sweet monster... I apologize for calling you away from your duties, but I feel there is something we need to discuss." He slowly makes his way over and takes a seat on his couch, gently patting the seat next to him. "Take a seat." Pierrot is evidently confused by what's going on, his eyes searching Jester's face for perhaps any clue that could help him understand what this could be about. He takes a seat as instructed, his confusion only growing as Jester hands him the letter. "Go on and read that."
SOMETHING... ISN'T RIGHT about this. There's no name on the front to show who this might be addressed to, but considering Jester handed him the note, Pierrot figures it must be for him. He seems to hesitate at first, a sense of dread forming in the pit of his stomach. Carefully, he tears the envelope open and stares at the letter that falls out. Instantly, he can smell a faint lingering scent of Evelyn; did she write this letter for him? OH! What could it say? It must be extra special if she felt the need to write a letter for it. Was it perhaps a proclamation of her love to him? Now he's practically scrambling to fold the letter open, his mask showcasing a smile as his eyes frantically scan the words on the paper.
"I... I D-DON'T understand..." Pierrot rereads the words, his hands trembling, "What.. What does sh-she mean, 'this is-isnn't going to work between us-us'?" He glances up towards Jester, tears already dripping out from the holes of his mask, "Wha-what? But... But she... She t-told me she l-la-loved me... She s-said-" He gets to his feet, clutching the letter tightly between his hands, close to ripping it apart. Jester gets up as well and gently places his hand on Pierrot's arm, "Pierrot... Dear. Perhaps she's come to realize it won't work between you two. She's a human, and you're a monster. These types of things simply don't work. She's trying to keep you safe." Pierrot can barely hold back a sob as he turns to face Jester, "N-no no...! She s-said she... She doesn't care that I'm a m-mm-monster. That s-she still loves m-me. Was she j-j-just lying to me th-this whole time?"
"I DON'T KNOW. Perhaps... It's hard to tell with humans. Sometimes they'll tell you things you want to hear just to get closer to you, so you'll lower your guard, and they can hurt you." Jester reaches out to gently cup Pierrot's face in his hands and brush what tears he can off his cheeks. Oh, how his heart ached to see his beloved monster in such pain, but he had to remind himself that this was necessary. If he were to protect Pierrot from making a mistake he'd be bound to regret, then of course he'd do whatever it takes, even if it meant hurting him in the process. Sometimes you hurt those you love the most.
HOWEVER, PIERROT DOESN'T want to believe this is over between him and Evelyn; he won't believe it's over. His mind begins to race with thoughts of needing to show her how much he loves her, how he can't be without her. If he can only explain to her, then maybe she'd see reason and come back. Of course. That was the only way. He refuses to let her go so easily. He'll make her come back one way or another. Tossing the letter to the side, he takes a few steps back from Jester and darts out of his tent. Jester can only follow after, needing to make sure that Pierrot doesn't hurt himself in his pursuit of madness.
