That Prologue was adorable and I immediately had this idea. Here's the first of what I'm sure will be a bunch of Marcus x Preston art (as soon as I actually finish listening to the audiobook, and my commissions)

I knew if I didn’t finish this up before I got stuck into commissions I'd likely never come back to it.

The first line makes me think it's Marcus, because he loves looking at his prince

But the second line makes me think it's Preston, because as we learned Preston doesn't feel his usual touch aversion towards Marcus

While it’s relatively peaceful (knock on wood), I want to talk about something that’s been stewing in my brain.

There’s a trend that happens in big fandoms, especially this one. It’s almost predictable: things are going well, we’re happy overall, and meanwhile there’s some dark energy brewing. That crowd, that other crowd, that other other crowd... Antis from seemingly every corner, constantly scheming and waiting to stir up noise and cause a problem.

Y’all know who I mean. The mean girls.

One thing about mean girls is that they love mess. Toxic, nasty, invasive mess. They get a big laugh, they have a lot of fun in their gcs, and because they thrive on your frustration and anger, they seem to always win.

They wear many masks, pretending to have some Good Cause underneath their crusade, because it helps them defend their behavior. It helps them sleep better. The “defense squad,” the “I’m a true fan,” the “I’m the only one that really cares about my fav.” It’s all shit, but they embrace these statements as permission slips to badger and skewer anyone they deem a “threat,” or even slightly in the way of whatever it is they want to prove.

Sometimes it’s a shipping war, sometimes it’s a fight between solos, and for us lucky souls in the HR fandom, we’ve got shippers and solos trying to get a piece and jumping in. Oh joy.

Here’s my advice though. And you won’t love this, but…

Stop trying to win.

I mean it. I’m an old hag, I’ve been in fandom spaces for decades. When you see a mean girl, a troll, an anti, don’t take the bait.

I know y’all want to. I get it. Because it feels good to put someone in their place, it feels vindicating to fight fire with fire and try to embarrass a hater on main. I get it. I really do.

But here’s the thing.. You can’t win by pouring gasoline onto their fires. You can’t defeat a mean girl by being mean right back, because that’s the fuel that sustains them. The more you yell and shout, the more they’re going to laugh it up and keep pushing your buttons. When they see what made you jump, they’re going to keep hitting that same spot. Over, and over.

Cause the thing with mean girls/antis/trolls is, they’re not like you and I. They don’t have empathy for you, or whomever they’re bullying. They don’t employ the full range of human emotions to be reasoned with, because if they did, they wouldn’t be such See you next tuesdays in the first place.

As our lovely Connor once said, small people do ugly things to hide how small they are. Nothing you do or say will fill that void. Follow his example - don’t engage. Don’t be pulled into their vat of poison. Rise above.

I see a lot of you living in fear of these people, so you feel like you need to do something. The anxiety, the dooming. “They’re going after H,” “They’re going after C,” “They’re going to launch a new theory.” Of course they will. That’s what sustains them, is causing trouble. But while I support spreading awareness as needed (IE, please tell us about targeted campaigns, users to avoid, etc), that should be the LIMIT of how you engage.

Do not comment back to them. Do not jump into their threads. Do not message them, for god’s sake. And do not let the Thought of them keep you awake, do not doom spiral that this will happen, and that will happen.

An important fact I’ve learned from my fandoms, especially when real people are involved, is that companies, reps, teams, etc monitor our spaces. They’re not reading our discussions, but you’d best believe they are tracking trends, looking for sizable disturbances and noticing legitimate threats. You don’t need to put yourself on the front lines to defend these boys - spread awareness, send their teams info if you want, but do not put your mental health at risk. Their teams are monitoring them, even when it doesn’t look like it.

Unfortunately, they do have priorities. They only jump in when it’s very necessary. So yes, a lot of ugliness will be “ignored”. A lot of gossip and slander will be allowed to fester, especially in our fandom spaces. We don’t make the call on when anyone’s team will choose to engage. And that’s okay!

Most of the smear attempts we see are just that: attempts. Small-minded, flimsy jabs that eventually get disintegrated in the light of truth. Don’t lose sleep over it, don’t take the bait and let bullies impact your quality of life. Report, block, move on.

I wanna circle back to my title on this post.

Because yeah, I get that a lot of this feels hopeless sometimes. You might find the same nonsense rumor, the same ugly smear, the same distorted blind item gaining traction for weeks. It happens. I’ve witnessed one take hold for years. Sometimes there really is nothing you can do except to spread the truth, and hope for the best.

But the truth will set you free. Love and light will rise to the surface, always. When our boys look at this fandom, the love is the first thing they see.

It’s as my title says: At the end of the day, God don’t like ugly. The universe doesn’t reward soul rot.

I’ve dealt with my fair share of bullies poisoning my spaces. They’re an immutable fact of life, always some critters hiding somewhere. But I’ve been around long enough to see what happens to them; where their poison gets them.

For as long as their souls are consumed by rot, they can’t grow. They won’t truly thrive. They might find that the universe doesn’t give them what they truly want, and they can’t move on. They will stay in that deep well, eating themselves and each other, stealing energy and not realizing that is exactly why they can’t climb out. Why their lives don’t move forward, into true blessings.

During the match Preston was different. Not his usual coldblooded self. He completely lost that aspect after the first period of the game.

Marcus consistently checked and fell on top of Preston and the note of this makes me think he was pushing Preston's isssues with their relationship. Maybe reminding him of it.

Marcus admits to Dahlia the best person to date on the team is 'the prince' aka Preston and then gets possesive and says anyone but him (u r not subtle)

Preston is spiralling a bit now, being more risky with his own life etc.. (dyring the warriors game which is a bit after the last encounter with Marcus)

During the picnic Preston's eyes are dimmed (is this the good luck babe phase? OMG this happens right before his fake out death. HOLYYY. I'm gonna cry so fucking much)

Preston get's shot at by the hitman after Violet right after realising he and Violet are related

Marcus was there during the picnic hiding (as shown in the art below and from Violet's observations)

Marcus showed up when Preston was shot and tried to save him so when he goes to the hospital he's covered in blood

Marcus becomes completely blank while Preston is in surgery, (in my opinon it's like his body is a soulless husk) The thing giving him life (Preston) is just gone, but when arguing for Preston angry sparks come back (genuinly bawled my eyes out when I reread this, like I am not emotionally built for this shit)

Marcus is enraged by Preston's dad

Marcus blames Jude for Preston getting shot (he's projecting, most likely is actually blaming himself) and also very much blames Violet

Preston and Marcus are very much broken up when his death is faked (will do a theory post on that)

Marcus screams about how their all lying about Preston's death and fights the guards escorting him out

It takes four men to get him out of hospital

when Marcus hears about the death he's like an "injured animal"

Preston's sister hugged the casket and cried at Preston's funeral so they have a good relationship
