INTRODUCING: c0rpsehauler
Corpsehauler: c0rpsehauler is an identity I created for myself to express a more suppressed part of my inner world. Here I am supposedly “carrying” the “corpse” of the other part of my identity that ceases to exist in this absurd state.
The name Corpsehauler was directly derived from an MTG card I loved. It just stuck with me.
Your characters are stylized to the edge of distortion. Who controls their bodies: you, the gothic masses, or the gaze that consumes them?
Corpsehauler: I am in control of my characters. In the world they exist, they are dolls I distort to reflect imagery from my childhood and dreams.
I really loved dolls growing up and have an endless fascination with them, so they became a subconscious part of my work. They represent both the mind’s fragility and myself.
All of the imagery used in my work are rooted in whimsical themes that greatly impacted me as a child. The doll’s gazes reflect a longing to return to that time; to what once was.
What does darkness allow you to express that brightness would censor?
Corpsehauler: The darkness helps me to process certain experiences that happened to me.
Even though I am directly confronting this aspect of myself, it’s simultaneously a form of escapism from the mundanity (and dread) that real life can bring, allowing me to maintain my sense wonder and existential curiosity. It gives me the space to explore the depth of both this inner world and the world of dreams.
Is your gothic femininity rooted in historical romanticism, or shaped by contemporary internet subcultures?
Corpsehauler: I’d say it’s a blend of both historical and contemporary influences. At its core, it’s rooted in romanticism. The characteristics of that era have always resonated with me.. But at the same time, it has been shaped subconsciously by the media I’ve consumed (especially music and film), dating back to even before my exposure to the internet. :)
