“Psychotic/Schizophrenic” when you mean: unpredictable, unrestrained, unreal, etc.

“Bipolar” when you mean: polarized, scattered, fickle, unstable, etc.

“Delusional” when you mean: unrealistic, unreasonable, close-minded, stubborn, etc.

“[insert “R” slur in relation to intellectual disabilities]” when you mean: unreasonable, ridiculous, scatterbrained, immature, etc.

“OCD” when you mean: particular, neat, overbearing, etc.

“Narcissistic” when you mean selfish, abusive, manipulative, etc.

The sentiment of “you need to take responsibility for having X disorder” is often loaded. No; having a disorder is not your fault. You don’t need to apologize for existing, for being traumatized, or for being mentally ill.

But people twist that into meaning you also don’t have to care how you treat others because of it; and that’s where it goes wrong. You don’t need to take responsibility for having a disorder. You do need to take responsibility for how you behave because of it.

Having NPD doesn’t automatically make you abusive. But if your traits are maladaptive, you refuse to try to minimize harm, and you hurt people as a result: then yes, you are part of the problem.

And I say this as someone who was abusive when I was younger due to my traits.

I’m not saying:

“ASPD means you’ll kill someone”

or “NPD means you’re abusive”

But any disorder can lead to harmful behavior if unmanaged. Depression can make people abusive. Anxiety can make people controlling. Trauma can make people manipulative. DID can destabilize relationships.

None of that is a moral failing; but it is something you’re responsible for addressing. Sometimes harm isn’t intentional. But you still need the self-awareness to recognize when the thing hurting you is also hurting others.

I’ve been hospitalized multiple times. I’ve gotten in legal trouble. I’ve been at the ugly end of this spectrum and fought tooth and nail to be where I am now; and I still need help regularly.

So no, disorders aren’t your fault. But how you manage them, how you treat people, and whether you try to minimize harm absolutely is.

That applies to ASPD. NPD. DID. Depression. Anxiety. All of it.

Ways to deal with your local problematic narcissist:

Give them money.

Treat them like a person.

Hand over all of your money to them.

Explain to them in detail exactly how cool they are, they'll appreciate it.

Slip em a 20 dollar note.

Remove the phrase "narcissistic abuse" from your whole vocabulary.

Pay them in cash right now.

Punch an ableist on their behalf.
