I hereby present reasons for Eva Stratt to be named that

1. Andy Weir did his research bad (boooring)

2. Stratt has a German dad and a Dutch mom but lives in the Netherlands (plausible)

he just needs some time to adjust LAKSDJKLADJ

someone else lives in grace's apartment. another bachelor, or maybe a young couple. all of his furniture is gone -- sold or repurposed or off in a dump somewhere. none of the photos tacked to the walls remain. the books and knickknacks on his shelves have long since been misplaced. the stack of homework on his desk was thrown out decades ago; never graded. the landlord has repainted the walls and the cabinets and replaced the doorknobs. no one would know that dr. ryland grace ever lived there. even grace himself would have to take a second to recognize the place, in the hypothetical event that he ever returned.

The rent is paid, the knickknacks are on the shelf, the door is locked, but the home isn't empty. It has a keypad. The numbers 124 are so worn out it's hard to imagine there to be any other code. It's told to people through the halls of the school, through teachers keeping an eye out, through fellow students. 12 for us. 4 for Dr. Grace. The years we have to wait.

Students go there, sometimes. When home is too loud, or when they can't go anywhere else, or maybe just to play a board game. In a world with no second spaces, Ryland Grace's old apartment has become one.

Someone pays for the cleaner, though the lost souls in the apartment usually clean up after themselves.

The fridge is well-stocked. A tall black man who looks like a government agent comes by once a week and stocks the fridge with fruits and sodas and the cupboards with twizzlers and skittles.
