The fastest way I find possible to culturally immerse once-self to a community is to walk into a car hire shop, rent out a car and drive around the country.. you can write a book after, trust me. Heading to Chichen Itza, about half way there is a cozy rustic restaurant called Hacienda Selva Maya.. the restaurant is an old colonial style building with modern roof, the grounds have beautiful large trees and older remnants of colonial building. Lovely place to cool off.. Now… The Council of Elders, popularly known as Njuri Ncheke, has been governing the Meru people since the 17th Century. To become a member of the Njuri Ncheke is the highest social rank to which a Meru man can aspire. Members are carefully selected and comprise mature, composed, respected and incorruptible members of the community.
