This is a three bedroom floor plan for Phenix School Apartments. It offers about 1,500 sq. ft. of living space, with a separate master suite, walk-in closet, in-unit laundry, and more. Both three bedroom apartments are approximately the same, but their floor plans are mirror images. In this apartment, the windows in the living room face north. In the other apartment, they face south.

What do you mean by artist housing?

Phenix School Apartments has been designed to provide affordable housing for artists in the Valley Junction neighborhood of West Des Moines. Today, we released more information on how to qualify as an artist when you apply.

For purposes of our housing define “artist” as “a person who actively participates in and has made a long-term commitment to practice one of the various creative arts as a profession, or practitioner who demonstrates proficiency in the arts with a dedication beyond the level of casual hobbyist.”

To be an artist applicant for our housing you will have to demonstrate that you or a member of your household meets this definition. You can find out how by reading our policy on artist housing.

Tiles by former Phenix students

Valley Junction resident Jack reached out and asked us:

“I remember when the wall art was done by the Phenix students and placed on the north wall on the second floor. My daughter Sara has a piece on the mural. I wonder what will happen to it or can people reclaim their piece of art.”

We are doing our best to protect these tiles during the construction process and our goal is to keep them exactly where they are on display in the hallway. It feels right that the first art displayed in Phenix School Apartments should have been made by former students.
