Let me preface this saying, I give people free tarot readings, offered in a forum for said exchanges. I give them a discount for future readings, and if I'm approached for a second free reading, I remind them of the discount. I don't have the free-paid conversion that I'd like, but I feel like I'm up front about things.

I posted on @maggiestiefvaterposts's critique group to find a partner for my current WIP and had some interest. Sent a few people what was the first chapter and became two chapters. One sent a nice page of notes. Later today, she followed up with a “how are you?” and I had just read her notes, so I brainstorm dumped at her for a bit.

In her reply, she said she was excited to keep reading. Did I want to see her fees?

What. No? This was a crit partner exchange group. I think she said she was just an editor, but she did not say "So, I'll read one chapter for free, and then we can discuss my fee." She wanted me to be so impressed by her critiquing that I'd happily pay her $20 or $30 for each of the additional 25 chapters, I guess.

And when I said, no, sorry, disability, broke. She asked if I could afford $20 or $30. Bitch, no. I am $200 overdrawn today, actually, but that’s not the point. There are places I could go if I wanted paid editorial services! Then she said, "I didn't say $200, I said $20 or $30."

If she doesn't have MLMs in her past, I'd be very shocked.

I followed up with the other people who had pages, letting them know I'd happily trade, but did not have money. I think she's the one whose reply sounded AI. I hope, because then she's the only one doing this.

I just...I went there, because there wasn't a subscription fee. I came up in writing twitter, where not everything was monetized. I haven't put myself out there in years, and this isn't making me eager to keep trying.

What followed was dreaming through my own Harru/Draco fic "following" Sam's. Honestly, it was pretty complete, amd if the cultural climate wasn't what it is, I'd write both fics. They were appropriately queer and ACAB-coded, including a consideration of House Elf gendering.
