I think one of the biggest lessons I learned this year is this: Trust the person who protects your name in your absence.

A real friendship doesn’t have to start perfectly it grows, it strengthens and with time, it becomes something beautiful. Sometimes two people may not even like everything about each other in the beginning and that’s okay. When the bond gets stronger, you can openly talk about what you disliked at first and then laugh about it together. That’s real connection.

But never trust someone who suddenly tells you what others said behind your back only after they’ve had a fight with those people. Because even if they didn’t speak against you, they also didn’t protect you.

To me, a true friend is someone around whom people don’t even have the audacity to speak against you.

So yes friendships don’t need a perfect beginning. They just need honesty, loyalty, and no backbiting. In fact, the more perfect a friendship looks at the start, the less likely it is to last.

And it’s okay to be alone if you haven’t found those kinds of people yet. One day you might and if not then learn to become your own best friend.
