a-chilleus

midsummer passed with with a flurry

of fresh blooms and hot light,

opal pools, honey-wine love. at dusk

a thousand small voices raised

from every tree and pond and field

in a euphoric cacophony of song. but

as the sun goes to bed so must the

merrymakers. darkness trickled in. i

looked up to the sky but the stars were kisses

too far away to catch. the moon slowly rose

but i turned my back on her cool light

because i longed only for the sun. still,

she never lost her soft smile. her quiet arms

found mine and she taught me how to hear

the music of mushrooms growing and

how to catch firefly-kisses and

how to build a roaring fire that sent smoke

all the way into the dark heavens. we danced

among the sparks long into the night and then

we too gently, gently rest, relax, exhale.

what they don’t teach you is before you can love youself you must learn how to simply live with yourself. you have to wait for those breathless moments after the rain when you can hold your own hand and apologize for all the pain you carved into your skin. grow a garden so that you can love the flowers. here’s a shovel. it’s time to get going.

cold bone fingers under

the dying stars. you hear

your own heartbeat echoing

the crashing waves. you wish

you could pull that heart out

and rip it open like a pomegranate,

squeezing the seeds and flesh,

watching the juice spill out onto the sand.

you wonder if you would feel it, even then.

It’s 9:45pm and you’re on the bus when everything first starts to fall apart. Your friend says it before you even think it yourself. You recoil from just the idea of it. You knew there were people like you, but you weren’t one of them. You feel your hypothetical future crumbling around you and it terrifies you. You ignore it and move on with life, as if you can put your dreams back together by sheer force of will, even if you have to hold the bricks together until your shoulders ache and your fingers bleed.

It’s 5:20am and you can’t sleep because the broken remains of your future lay all around you like the bones of an ancient beast that Reality finally slayed and no matter how hard you try to rebuild it the bone dust seeps through your fingers like sand. You cry, but you don’t know why. How is it possible to mourn something you never had?

It’s 4:15pm and you’re doing laundry and you just can’t ignore it any more. A boy tells you he loves you and you know you could never say it back. You choke on the dust as it fills your lungs and your mouth and you feel the grit between your teeth and you finally let go of your future and let it fall around you.

It’s 11:45am and you’re sitting in your room on your laptop and you finally look up from the ruins around you to see the sky. You could never see it before. Now, the brightness almost blinds you, but the blue is so beautiful compared to all of the gray and the dust. You look down but now you see the horizon instead of the walls and realize that the future is not so narrow and perfect as you imagined, but there are infinite possibilities ahead of you.

this morning the light

was warm and the trees

gave soft smiles as i

passed by. i ate a fresh

chocolate chip cookie

my boyfriend baked for me

but i couldn’t stop thinking

about the dead baby rabbit

outside his front window.

a cold sadness curled up

in my heart and i shivered

under the sunlight. i still

wake up some nights thinking

about how its small shriveled body

could fit in the palm of my hand.

maybe some things are meant

to die. but it never

stops the sorrow.
