sladerobinweek day 1 - possession (aka the return of father todd in a completely different story)

Duke: *nervously looks over his shoulder at Bruce pulling a sneering Damian by the scruff of the neck, Dick restraining a furious Tim via bear hug, Alfred telling Jason to get down from the counter, Cass ushering the family pets to safety, and the refrigerator on fire*

Duke: *sips chocolate milk, then looks straight into the Snapchat camera*

I kind of had a scenario in mind where Tim had used all his lines for the night and needed to restock so the 3 are having a slightly stilted chat while they head for one of their stores but Damian gives Tim a fake innocent shove and he falls only Dick has been totally stalker counting how many Tim had used and is hyper aware of Tim and his wellbeing with everything that’s going on.

So as soon as Tim slips Dick is running. Damian didn’t plan to kill him - just maim a little? keep him out of their hair for a little while.

1) “Stay down.”They struggled to their feet again, despite the warning. Despite the way their vision swayed. They were knocked down. “I said,” the other snapped, “stay down. Unless you want me to break every bone in your body so you never stand up again.” They pushed themselves to their feet. Didn’t attack - just stood. Someone had to stand up against what was happening, no matter the cost. 

2) “Stay down.” The hand pressed warm on the back of their neck and sent a tingle through the protagonist’s belly at the closeness. The flutter of breath excited by their ear. “They haven’t gone yet.” They stayed crouching together, a too intimate tangle of limbs, a too high chance of being caught.When the other finally moved on they both broke into breathless, adrenaline-spiked laughter. And they could practically see the moment their companion became aware of their closeness too.

Kon doesn’t even realise he’s grabbed Tim’s hand.

Here are some of the things that have happened at previous meetings.

- A boy stumbled in, wide-eyed and messy haired, poured himself a mug of coffee. He never noticed that he completely missed the mug. He announced loudly, “BRUCE you’re not gonna fuckin believe this” and started rambling out a theory. In response, Bruce closed his eyes, pinched the bridge of his nose, and just waited for a minute. 

- A tiny kid with a katana walked in followed by a cow. Bruce didn’t even look up. 

- A gangly kid came in with a gun strapped to one thigh and a round of throwing knives strapped to the other. He took a chair from the dining room and dragged it all the way into the kitchen. It screeched across the floor the entire time. The league watched silently. The boy stood up on the chair to look at the assorted bottles of alcohol on top of the fridge. He chose tequila, took the cork out, and drank it straight from the bottle. 

“It’s okay, I’m over 21.” He said. 

Bruce shook his head, “he’s not. just ignore him.” The boy poured the rest of the tequila into a water bottle and dragged the chair back across the floor. On his way out, he gave a mock salute and said, “later, pops.”

- a cop in his mid twenties came in and said, “Lil D asked me to brink turkey food? I couldn’t tell if he was joking or not so I bought some.”

Bruce, who had no idea whether or not there really was a turkey in his house, just soundlessly pointed him in the right direction.

- A girl walked in soundlessly and sat next to Bruce. She never said anything, just listened calmly and nodded every so often. This wasn’t a problem. Bruce loves his only daughter.

- another boy came in, wearing a yellow bat symbol on his chest. Wide eyed, he tapped bruce on the shoulder carefully and said, “Uh, I’m pretty sure we’re in the middle of an alien invasion. Is that… is that something you deal with, or do I… am I gonna have to… what do I -”

We can have conversations about patterns we see in fanworks. We can discuss how we portray characters and relationships, how to effectively convey what we want to in writing, how to sensitively approach representations of marginalized characters. But having those conversations productively requires that we approach each other in good faith, and it requires the ability to self-regulate–including recognizing that often there is no hard line, no black and white answer, and we won’t always come to the same conclusions.

It requires an understanding up front that eliminating all fanworks we don’t care for is not the end goal of these conversations.

I’ll give a personal example. There is a ship that deeply, viscerally upsets me in like 95% of its iterations. I can explain why I don’t like it if asked. I’ve written about why I don’t think it’s handled well in canon.

And if I wanted to–if I wanted to–I could make a very convincing-sounding argument for why that ship is objectively bad and wrong and no one should ship it. Not because that’s objectively right, mind you, but because I’m good at arguing. I could slap that together in like… ten minutes, probably.

I don’t do that. If I vent about it on my own blog, it’s as infrequently as I can manage, because I do my best to avoid the content that upsets me. I don’t seek it out to get riled up about it. I don’t seek out content that upsets me, read it in its entirety, and then leave angry comments and send my friends to harass the author. I don’t choose a high-profile writer for the content I don’t like and engage in a targeted campaign of harassment against them all while claiming to be addressing a general problem.

If you are deliberately seeking out content that you know will upset you and reading it anyway and then feeling that you need to take those bad feelings out on the creator, you are not taking care of yourself. You are not engaging in healthy behavior or productive coping mechanisms. You are not keeping yourself safe, and you are not helping to make fandom safer for others. You are not engaging in good faith.

If you find that you do this and you can’t seem to stop, you may need to take some kind of further steps up to and including taking a break from fandom. I’m serious. I’ve taken breaks myself for that exact reason. There’s no shame in it. 

Dick, cooing and patting: Shh, shh. Don’t worry, Dami. Everything will be fine, don’t cry, kiddo.

Damian: *grins at Jason evilly*
