I don't recall Drift's potential evil backstory in vampires but:
AU where Drift is the orchid killer and fled the city after killing a private detective who got too close to the truth (and told other people, which she found out too late)
And Drift and Sausage are first turned, and Sausage's serial killer identity thief backstory is in play.
Just. Evil Overlord Scott, mass slaughterer Owen, and the two new fledglings of the coven: a pair of serial killers. They're having a great time. They're talking shop. They're comparing notes.
Specifically, I'm thinking she left the orchid on the detective's doorstep as an intimidation/scare tactic, as the orchid killer did in canon, except here, Drift, the orchid killer, severely miscalculated the underlying character of the detective in question.
So Drift believed it when she pretended to cower, and pretended to run, but it was all an act to get Drift dead to rights.
So, faced with every police officer in the city knowing who she is and the newspapers set to print her face in the morning edition, Drift gets the hell out of dodge and goes to Oakhurst to lie low, maybe get some horticultural samples from undisturbed forest, and then figure out which city to move to from there.
At least Pyro isn't Scott's evening hot pocket this time. I doubt he gets out with his humanity but if he's not isolated by his killers from nearly the get-go maybe he won't spiral as much. Maybe he'll keep his 'a second try at life' thing, except this time it's a bit more literal than he really wanted.
@mytoomanybookstoread now I'm imagining them prying their way into Owen's business enough for them to learn more about his Thing with Doc, and then proceeding to rizz him up and give him suggestions that are just. So insane.
Owen: he doesn't understand!
Drift and Sausage: SO true bestie. You should remind him of the danger and remind him you could kill him. Maybe you should maim someone so he can show off his skills.
Owen: do you think that would work?
Drift: Totally! These do-gooder types, they love this stuff. They really go wild for the opportunity to prove their morals. Y'know, if I were him, I'd be delighted.
Sausage: You could even set it up like a scene from a play! Send him a romantic letter and then when he shows up, pow! There's Pyro, bleeding out!
Scott, watching in fascination:
before the series, in the city Drift hails from:
Detective, breathing hard, trembling from the adrenaline and bleeding from a dozen cuts from the broken glass in the greenhouse she's broken into: it's over, you monster! In just three hours, the morning papers will go on sale, and your face will be above the fold on every. single one. I've stopped you! Finally!
Drift, Orchid Killer: Awwwww you're trembling! That's kinda cute. Too bad we both know you're lying. You'd never end our game like that.
Distant shouting. A searchlight blazes through the glass.
Detective: I also talked to the police.
Drift: ...Really? C'mon, man. That's just not cool.
Detective: I DON'T CARE WHAT'S COOL! I WANT YOU BROUGHT TO JUSTICE!
Drift: Well yeah, you say that, and I guess that's a totally reasonable thing to want. But I was kinda hoping we'd pitch over the side of a skyscraper while trying to kill each other, and fall to our deaths together.
Detective:
Detective: Why
The shouting gets closer. A battering ram sounds against the doors several floors below.
Drift: Because I thought we had a thing! You've been stalking me with such dedication! You keep notes! You followed up on the orchids! You know how many police detectives followed up on the dye I was using? None!
Detective: I followed up because you were killing people!
Drift: I mean I guess I can see that now.
The door breaks. A dozen footsteps echo in a stairwell. They still have time; there are several barricaded doors left.
Drift: You know what? This is on me.
Detective: Obviously???
Drift: I underestimated you. And overestimated our friendship.
Detective: We're not friends! You're some kind of sick-minded freak, and you're about to go behind bars! Forever!
Drift: Well you didn't need to say that. That's just hurtful. Anyway, you're wrong.
Flees
.
Obviously, this means Sausage is her rebound bestie.
I'm imagining one of her main Things is that she really enjoys getting to know her victims well enough to predict exactly what they'll do, and perhaps even kills them with traps that predict how they'll react to stressful situations.
You know, as a show of skill. So being wrong about the detective is really bothering her, and the whole vampirism thing of being able to hear a heartbeat and smell sweat, and drink a person's blood to get their memories?
Either she's really into it, or she feels a bit like it's cheating.
