The Presentation
I wake up to the sound of my alarm blaring at 6:29 in the morning. Letting out an exhausted yawn, I force myself out of bed. A shiver runs through my body as my feet touch the cold marble floor. I trudge over to the bathroom, hitting my pinky toe on my desk chair in the process. A small hiss escapes my lips as I limp to the bathroom and turn on the light. The sudden brightness forces me to shield my eyes temporarily as my pupils adjust.
Glancing up at the mirror, I take in my tired, worn-out, and annoyed appearanceāclearly robbed of my last precious minute of sleep. Baggy eyes, a disheveled afro, and dried-up drool at the corners of my mouth stare back at me. I let out a quiet chuckle before turning on the faucet to wash my face and brush my teeth.
Itās too quiet.
āAlexa, play my K-pop music box playlist, volume to three,ā I say, loud enough for the speaker to hear but quiet enough not to disturb the rooms surrounding mine. Soft music fills my space as I finish getting ready for the day.
By 9 a.m., I am fully dressed and prepared for my first class of the dayāthough I would much rather stay in bed. Just as I am about to walk out the door, my phone vibrates with an email notification from my professor.
āClass has been canceled. Please work on the assignment listed in the syllabus and have it prepared for the next session.ā
Overcome with immense joy, I step back inside my apartment and head straight for my room. I toss my bag onto my chair, climb into bed, and grab my koala stuffed animal, clinging to it like an actual koala. Wrapped in the warmth of my blankets, I drift into a euphoric state of sleep.
Wake upā¦
Wake upā¦
Wake upā¦
āLorelei, wake up.ā
I stir at the feeling of someone shaking me. Stretching and yawning, I rub the sleep from my eyes and find my best friend and roommate, Hani, standing over me.
āGirl, youāre going to be late for your Korean class. Get up,ā she says, arms crossed, her tone laced with irritation.
I check the time. Oh my goodnessāitās almost noon!
Bolting upright, I grab my bag from my bean bag chair. āDo you think Iāll have enough time to get food?ā I ask. āClass doesnāt start for another forty-five minutes.ā
Hani shrugs, sitting down at her desk. āIf you get there in the nextā¦ā she pauses to check her watch, āā¦fifteen minutes, you should be fine.ā
I shoot her a thumbs-up, slide into my pink fluffy sandals, and rush out of the dorm.

As soon as I step outside, the warm summer air greets me. Itās not unbearably hot like it has been for the past few days. Should I get a snack or an actual meal? I glance at the timeāonly twenty minutes before class starts. Looks like I only have time for a snack.
Briskly, I walk to the nearest corner market. The moment I step inside, the scent of fresh bread fills the air, and I notice a line of about five or six people in front of the cashier. Without hesitation, I make a beeline for the bottled coffee and egg sandwiches, grabbing one of each. By the time I reach the checkout line, only three people remain ahead of me. Five minutes later, Iām at the register, quickly paying for my food before hurrying back to campus.
When I arrive at the building, a group of students from my class is standing outside the classroom, waiting for the door to be unlocked. Some chat excitedly about an upcoming party, while others stress over their grades from a recent test.
Leaning against the wall, I close my eyes, still groggy from my nap, when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I open my eyes slightly and turn to see Eden, a classmate and good friend of mine, looking at me with concern.
āAre you feeling alright?ā she asks.
I nod, standing up straight. āIām just drained⦠If I could drop out, I would, but my parents would kill me. Honestly, Iād give anything not to be in this class right now.ā I chuckle.
Eden nods before glancing past me toward the group of students. āLetās go, the doorās unlocked.ā
Following her into the classroom, I immediately notice a few new students. One, in particular, catches my eyeāan undeniably attractive guy. I find myself staring, and for half a second, our eyes meet before I quickly look away.
I hurry to my seat beside Eden, setting my food on the desk. āHey, Eden⦠Did you see the new guy?ā I ask, lowering my voice so only she can hear.
She scans the room with a confused expression. āWhich one?ā
Before I can answer, she spots him. āOhhh, him?ā she saysāway too loudly.
