S1 & S2: they know there’s more between them than just brotherhood but they’ve never acted on it, too afraid to cross that line. But they look when the other comes out of the bathroom in just a towel, they listen when the other jerks off, they know what the other sounds like when he comes. They’re aware of it, but it’s background noise.

S3. Then Dean makes his Deal. Suddenly it’s not background noise anymore, it’s this deep aching need for the other. It starts happening early in that year they have left because Sam, despite trying and trying and trying to save Dean, deep down he knows he’s going to lose him. Dean dies.

S4. Dean comes back and he’s distant. Angry. There are angels and warnings for the End, and neither knows what to do with that. Dean doesn’t mention the things they used to do in the dark, and when Sam tries to bring it up Dean shuts him down. It’s still there but it’s an angry, hurt thing now. Dean finds out about Ruby and the blood, and everything spirals. They don’t touch eachother, because they barely talk to each other. The panic room happens, and Dean feels betrayed. So does Sam.

S5. Sam let Lucifer out. He’s guilty, guilty, guilty. Dean leaves him. Then brings him back. Sam starts it again as repentance. Surely, if he gives this back to Dean, Dean will forgive him. Dean doesn’t. It just becomes a new way for Dean to take out his anger on Sam. It becomes a punishment until Sam mentions his plan and Dean agrees. That last week it’s everything Sam wanted it to be. Dean is sweet to him. Loving. Gentle. Sam is forgiven. He jumps into Hell with the Devil in his head and his brother’s forgiveness.

S6. Soulless Sam offers. At least once a day. Dean says no. Something about his baby brother feels wrong. He doesn’t like this cold, brutal version of Sam. When he figures it out and gets Sam’s soul back, Sam doesn’t offer anymore and Dean doesn’t ask.

S7. Sam is insane. When he opens up the possibility of starting again, he realizes he can’t even talk about it without wondering if he’s hallucinating, and he’s not sure if Dean still wants him like that. Dean tries to initiate once and Sam freaks out because he thinks Dean is Lucifer.

S8. When Sam walks into that cabin, and after Dean attacks him, Sam is not only pulled into a hug but also a kiss. It’s rough and a little violent, but it’s also bliss. They both think this might be it, and then Dean finds out that Sam stopped hunting, and again everything falls apart. They have angry sex twice, but other than that things are still not great between them. Dean finds out about how bad the trials are affecting Sam, and finally lets it go.

S9. Dean violates Sam with an Angel. After, Sam flinches when Dean gets too close to him. Things do not get better here. Dean gets the Mark. Sam gets a feeling of dread. Dean dies. They don’t touch this year.

S10. Dean is a demon. Sam does truly horrific things to find and fix him. Then Dean is not a demon, and this is where they finally start to heal. After their little vacation, once Sam is used to being around Dean without flinching, Sam stays in Deans bedroom. They fuck all over the bunker. The Mark starts affecting Dean more everyday right up until he summons Death and swings a scythe at his little brothers head.

S11. The Darkness is released. Dean is angry for all of two seconds but knows that if it was Sam he probably would’ve done the same thing. They really turn into an old married couple here. God is real and God knows, and then God tells them he really doesn’t care. Then Dean agrees to be a human bomb and Sam can’t keep playing this fucking game.

S12. Dean finds Mary, alive. Sam is kidnapped by British Barbie Bitch and Dean is pissed. When they all get back to the Bunker, Sam and Dean don’t know how to function normally with their mother around. Obviously, she can’t know her sons are fucking. They try to hide it as best they can, but after they come back from prison that secret comes out pretty quick. They’ve been apart for like two months and Mary finds it very weird that they can’t seem to keep their hands to themselves. Eventually she hears them, peaks into Dean’s room while she’s certain they’re sleeping and finds exactly what she was dreading. Her sons in bed together, obviously naked, Dean spooning Sam with an arm clamped around her youngest’s waist so tight, like even in his sleep Dean thinks that Sam might run away. Then she leaves. When they get her back from the BMOL she’s very uncomfortable around them and Dean figures out she must know and basically tells her that he doesn’t care, but Sam will, Dean says, so get your act together or get out. Sam finds out and he does care but their mother basically just says “don’t do it in front of me.” And promptly tries to forget about it.

S13. They’re so married here, and now they have a kid! Yay! Congrats, it’s a boy. Also, he’s the son of Satan, but it’s okay because he’s a cutie. Things happen. Sam dies in Apocalypse World and Dean is devastated. He can’t even muster up the proper rage at the lightning quick flash of relief that shutters over his mother’s face. He knows that the relief stems from their, admittedly, very inappropriate relationship. Lucifer brings Sam back and Dean hates that he feels grateful to that Bastard. That lasts less than five seconds because Lucifer took Sam and took Deans fucking kid so he says yes to Michael.

S14. There are way too many people around Sam’s home for him to ever feel at ease and it doesn’t help that his brotherlover is missing, but he makes do. He gave up his “bedroom” that he only kept in name to make their mother feel a little bit more comfortable. He’s not sure if it worked but she never said anything. Dean comes back and makes fun of his beard. Sam has never been so happy to be made fun of. Then Michael is still possessing Dean and Dean tries to leave him again. Sam is not having that. Somehow, they win.

S15. Jack dies. Rowena dies. God is the villain. Everyone is confused. Jack comes back. God steals their luck, they meet a wood nymph who tries to kill their son, and then before they know it they’ve adopted a dog and their son is God. Everything goes back to normal and they talk about stopping. They talk about a house and mundane jobs and Dean talks about repairing cars and maybe being a firefighter and Sam talks about going back to school and finding something to do after that. Maybe being a professor? He’s not sure. They just have to finish these vampires they tracked to a barn in Ohio.
