im always asking why people care so much more ab dean than sam but the answer is obvious lmao its because the entire show revolves around deans Noble White American Masculinity. he is burdened with the Glorious Purpose of killing the filthy savages whose blood in unclean in order to protect white suburbia. look at how sad he is as he kills and tortures! look at his pain and sacrifice! dean seems to stomp his influence all over the narrative: his entire life is hunting so the whole show is about hunting, his favorite music is classic rock so that's the shows soundtrack, he loves pop culture so every other line is another obnoxious american pop culture reference. dean loves cars so we get gratuitous appreciative shots of the american engineering miracle of the impala, thrumming down the road.
its hard to tell which way around the influence is - in the beginning dean is like that because eric kripke's on-the-road inspired fantasies demand that the masculine foil to sam is Like That. but as the show extends for 15 seasons in a constant dialogue with itself somewhere along the line deans masculinity takes on a life of its own - every other character is held in comparison to dean and every single time they cannot measure up. dean is able to, through guns or violence or the sheer weight of his manliness, subjugate them either sexually (if the character is a woman), by murdering them, or arranging them into part of his Family with himself at the head (sam, cas, kevin, charlie, jack, mary, etc). as the show begins to leave its era of the early 2000s it holds even tighter to the idea of dean.
sam is simultaneously the Innocent Family dean must protect, the person that dean enforces his authority on to reinforce his masculinity, and ALSO hes the gross disgusting other (weak or "feminine", literally has a transmittable sickness in his blood, sexual assault victim, drug addict, schizophrenic & "insane/hysterical") that needs to be brought back in line. what does sam want? what does sam like? these things are often either the subject of a throwaway joke or not considered at all EXCEPT when it threatens deans identity and thus the structure of the show. its like iwtv 1.02 where louis is struggling to kill humans and lestat is yelling at him about it but if it went on for 327 episodes instead. but whatever i don't care.
