Summary: Among the Sarentu, you are watched, tested, and slowly understoodโthough some seem to see more than others.
Cherrie's Notes: Thinking of making this into a more developed story potentially. Let me know if you want to see that!

The wind over the western frontier felt different.
It carried salt and something olderโstories whispered through stone and tide. You noticed it the moment your ikran dipped lower, wings slicing through the mist as the coastline stretched wide beneath you. This land was not like the forests of home. It was harsher. Wilder. And waiting.
You leaned forward slightly, fingers resting against the base of your ikranโs neck, grounding yourself. Behind you lay everything familiarโyour family, your clan, the towering trees that had watched you grow. Ahead of youโฆ responsibility.
As the eldest daughter of Jake and Neytiri, you had always known this day would come. You just hadnโt expected it to feel so heavy.
They saw you before you landed. A group stood along the ridgeโtall figures silhouetted against the pale sky. Their braids and markings were unfamiliar, their stance guarded. The Sarentu. You had heard the stories. Survivors. Fighters. Something in between legend and memory. Your ikran landed with a sharp cry, claws digging into the rocky ground. You dismounted in one fluid motion, straightening to your full height. And you felt their eyes.
Of course you did.
You had your motherโs faceโsharp, striking, unmistakably Naโvi. But everything else told a different story. Your broader shoulders, your stance, even the subtle differences in your featuresโฆ you carried your fatherโs origin in ways your siblings did not.
You had grown used to the looks. Still, it never stopped meaning something. One of them stepped forward. Not the tallest, not the most imposingโbut there was something about him. His movements were careful, observant. His eyes lingered on you longer than the othersโ, not with suspicion aloneโฆ but curiosity.
โTeylan,โ someone behind him muttered, as if grounding him.
So that was his name.
You speak your name, voice steady despite the unfamiliar tension in your chest. โDaughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri. I was sent to help.โ A flicker passed through the group at your fatherโs name. Of course. The man who fought sky people. The outsider who became Toruk Makto. You wondered, briefly, which part of him they saw when they looked at you.
Teylan stepped closer. Up close, you noticed the small detailsโthe way his ears angled slightly back when he studied you, the faint tension in his jaw like he was trying to read something beneath the surface.
โYou do not look like them,โ he said, not unkindly. Justโฆ honestly. A corner of your mouth lifted.
โI get that a lot.โ For a moment, silence hung between you. Thenโunexpectedlyโhis lips twitched. Not quite a smile. But close.
The Sarentu did not welcome easily. You learned that quickly. Days passed in a careful rhythm. You trained, you listened, you proved yourself in the ways that matteredโnot through words, but through action. Hunting in unfamiliar terrain. Learning their paths, their signals, their quiet way of watching everything before making a move.
And alwaysโฆ you felt his presence. Teylan was never far. At first, it was subtle. A glance during training. A shift in position when you entered a space. But over time, it became something elseโsomething quieter, steadier. He began speaking to you more.
Not in long conversations. Not at first. Just small things.
โYou favor your left side when you strike.โ
โYou move like the forest, even here.โ
โYou listen before you act.โ Each observation landed deeper than you expected. Because he wasnโt just looking at you. He was seeing you.
One evening, the sky burned gold over the cliffs, the ocean stretching endlessly below. You stood at the edge, arms crossed, letting the wind pull at your braids. โYou miss it,โ Teylan said behind you.
You didnโt turn.โOf course I do.โ
โBut you came anyway.โ That made you glance at him.He stood a few steps back, posture relaxed but eyes sharp as ever. There was something different in his expression now. Less guarded. Moreโฆ open.
โI didnโt have a choice,โ you said.
โThat is not true.โ
You tilted your head slightly. โNo?โ
โNo,โ he said, stepping closer. โYou could have refused. Found another way. Followed your own path.โ
You studied him for a long moment. โYou donโt know my family.โ
โThen tell me.โ The simplicity of it caught you off guard. Most people didnโt ask. Most people assumed.
You exhaled softly, turning your gaze back to the horizon. โMy father believes in fighting for what matters. My mother believes in protecting it. Iโฆโ You hesitated. โI think Iโm still figuring out which one I am.โ
โBoth,โ Teylan said. You looked at him again. He met your gaze fully this time. No hesitation. โYou came here to protect,โ he continued. โBut you stayed. You fight. You learn. You adapt.โ A faint softness touched his expression. โThat is both.โ
Something in your chest shifted. It wasnโt loud. It wasnโt overwhelming.
Justโฆ steady. Like the beginning of something you hadnโt expected to find here.
The wind carried salt and something older. But now it carries something else, too.
And for the first time since you arrived, the western frontier didnโt feel quite so distant from home.
The Sarentu did not change all at once. They shifted in pieces. The first to openly test you was Nor. It happened during training.
โYou hold it wrong.โ
You didnโt even turn. โI donโt,โ you replied calmly, adjusting your grip anywayโjust enough to provoke him.
A scoff.Then suddenlyโmovement. Nor lunged.
Fast.
You pivoted, blocking his strike with a sharp crack of wood against wood. He pushed harder than necessary, testing your strength, your balanceโyour patience.
โYou fight like a forest child,โ he muttered.
โAnd you fight like youโre trying to prove something,โ you shot back.
That earned you a real reaction. He pressed forward again, more aggressive this time, but you didnโt yield. You met him strike for strike, your movements fluid, grounded. Not quite Sarentuโฆ not quite Omaticaya.
Something in between. Something your own.
The clash ended with both your weapons locked between you.
Close. Too close for comfort. Norโs eyes narrowed slightly. Then, unexpectedly, he huffed a quiet laugh.
โYou donโt break easily.โ
โWas that the goal?โ you asked.
โMaybe.โ
From the edge of the clearing, you caught sight of Teylan. Watching. Of course he was. His arms were crossed, posture stillโbut his eyes tracked every movement. When Nor stepped back, lowering his weapon, Teylanโs shoulders eased almost imperceptibly. You pretended not to notice.
Ri'nela wasโฆ different. She didnโt test you. She studied you.
โYou carry tension here,โ she said one evening, fingers hovering just above your shoulder.
You blinked slightly. โI always carry tension.โ
โThat is not something to be proud of.โ
A small smile tugged at your lips. โI wasnโt aware I was boasting.โ
Riโnela hummed softly, guiding you to sit. Around you, soft glowing plants cast shifting light across her careful movements as she worked. โYou are the eldest,โ she said after a moment. โYou were shaped to endure more.โ
You didnโt answer. You didnโt need to. She understood anyway.
After a pause, she added, quieterโ โTeylan watches you when you are not aware.โ
Your head turned sharply. โHe watches everyone.โ
โNo,โ she said simply. โNot like that.โ
Heat crept faintly up your neck. You looked away. Riโnela said nothing moreโbut the knowing look in her eyes lingered long after.
If Riโnela observed, Tamtey talked.
Constantly.
โYou fly differently,โ he said one afternoon, walking far too close beside you as you checked your gear.
You raised a brow. โThatโs vague.โ
โItโs not vague. Itโs specific.โ
โIt is literally the opposite of specific.โ
He grinned. โYou dive steeper. Faster. Like you trust the fall.โ
You paused. Thatโฆ wasnโt wrong. โIs that a problem?โ you asked.
โNo,โ Tamtey said easily. โItโs just interesting.โ He leaned slightly closer, lowering his voiceโpoorly. โTeylan noticed it too.โ
You froze for half a second. Then kept walking. Iโm sure he notices many things.โ
โOh, he does,โ Tamtey said, far too pleased with himself. โBut not about everyone.โ
You shot him a look.
He only grinned wider.
From across the clearing, Teylanโwho had absolutely heard thatโturned abruptly and busied himself with something that did not need doing. Subtle. Very subtle.
Solek was the hardest to read. He didnโt smile. Didnโt offer easy approval. But he watched. Always.
โYou hesitate,โ he told you one morning, after observing a hunt.
You frowned slightly. โI succeeded.โ
โThat is not the same.โ His gaze was sharp, unwavering. โYou calculate too much. You carry responsibility before action.โ
You stiffened. โThat is how I was taught.โ
โAnd yet,โ Solek said, stepping closer, โthis land does not wait for certainty.โ His eyes flicked brieflyโpast you. To Teylan. Then back again. โYou are not here because you are the eldest,โ he continued. โYou are here because you are capable. There is a difference.โ
The words settled heavily. But not unpleasantly. Like truth often did.
After he dismissed you, you exhaled slowly, rolling your shoulders.
โYou did not hesitate,โ came a quiet voice behind you.ย
Of course. You didnโt turn this time.
โI did.โ
โNo,โ Teylan said, stepping beside you. โYou considered. Then acted.โ
A small glance toward him. โThatโs hesitation.โ
โIt is control.โ
Your lips pressed together, faintly amused. โYouโre very determined to disagree with Solek.โ
โI am very determined to be correct.โ
That earned a soft laugh from you. And for a momentโHe just looked at you. Not studying. Not analyzing.
Justโฆ looking.
Then, as if realizing it, he glanced away quickly, ears flicking slightly back.
You noticed that, too.
Later that night, as the camp settled into quiet, you found yourself sitting among themโnot apart, not observed, but included. Nor arguing with Tamtey. Riโnela softly corrects both. Solek silent, but present.
And TeylanโJust close enough. Not speaking much. But every so often, when something made you laugh, or when your voice carried across the circleโ His gaze would lift. And linger. Just a little longer than it should.
The western frontier was still unfamiliar. Still wild. Still unpredictable. But the people hereโ They were beginning to feel less like strangers. And more like something else. Something steadier. Something that, slowlyโWas starting to feel like it might matter.

The first time one of the Sarentu survivors called you โMa,โ it felt as though the entire forest stilled.
The sound came from Teylanโhalf-asleep, trembling in the wake of a night terror. He was taller than you, all long limbs and growing strength, but in that moment he folded into himself, trying to make himself smaller. Safer.
You did not hesitate.
You guided him gently down, gathering him into your arms as your own mother once had. You rocked him slowly, humming beneath your breath, an old Trrโong song, one you had not sung in years. One neither you nor Soโlek had heard in what felt like a lifetime.
Stillโฆ it felt right.
โI am here,โ you whispered, brushing damp strands of hair from his forehead. โYou are safe.โ
The word came thenโfragile, instinctive.
โMaโฆโ
You froze. Not from rejection, but from the weight of it. What it meant.
Across the shelter, Soโlek saw it happen. He said nothing. But something in his chest tightenedโฆ and then slowly settled.
After that, it became natural.
They gravitated towards you without thinking, drawn by something they could not name. Riโnela sought you out to braid her hair, asking you to weave small decorations through it with careful hands. Nor lingered nearby, quietly asking for your voice when doubt crept in. Tamtey asked for nothing at allโonly your presence beside him, silent and steady.
You gave it freely. Because you understood. There were wounds no medicine could reach. After Teylan, the others followed.
โMa.โ
โSaโnu.โ
The names came easier each time. And you never corrected them. Never told them they were too old, too strong, too anything for that kind of tenderness. Because you knew better. Survivors did not outgrow the need to be held. You hadnโt.
โYou coddle them.โ The voice cut cleanly through the moment, sharp, controlled, artificial in a way that never quite felt alive. Alma Cortez stood at the edge of the camp, her dreamwalker form unnervingly still. Watching. Measuring.โThey do not need you to play mother,โ she continued. โNot you.โ
You did not look up, only pausing briefly in your weaving. โThey need to feel safe,โ you replied simply.
Almaโs expression tightened. โThey are not children. They are not your children.โ
โNo,โ you said softly, finishing the weave with careful precision. โBut they are not yours.โ
That ended itโfor now. But the tension lingered long after she left.
Soโlek found you later, away from the others. You sat in the stream, hands submerged as the water carried away the remnants of the day. Quiet. Guarded. He approached without sound, as always. And as alwaysโyou knew.
โYou carry them as though they are yours,โ he said, crouching beside you.
โThey are not,โ you murmured. โBut they have no one who is.โ
A pause. Then, softerโmore vulnerable than you usually allowed: โAnd I remember what it was to have no one.โ
Soโlek studied youโthe strength in your posture, the gentleness in your hands. The way both existed without contradiction. He reached out, brushing a stray bead back into place along your braid. โYou areโฆ different with them,โ he said.
You huffed faintly. โIs that your way of calling me soft?โ
โYes.โ
You turned to him, mock offence flickering brieflyโbut it faded the moment you met his gaze. There was no judgement there. Only quiet admiration.
โI like this softness,โ Soโlek said, his voice low.
Your breath caught. โYou do?โ
โIt is not a weakness,โ he replied. โIt isโฆ something we nearly lost.โ His hand found yours, rough palm against rough palm. โYou remind them what it is to be cared for. To belong.โ Silence settled between youโbut it was not empty. It was full. Steady. Safe.
โThey call me Saโnu,โ you admitted after a moment, almost shy.
โI know.โ
โIt should not mean so much.โ
โBut it does.โ
Your gaze drifted back towards camp, where distant laughter echoed through the trees. โI do not want to replace what they lost,โ you said quietly. โI only want them to feel they are not alone any more.โ
Soโlek shifted closer. โThey do not see you as a replacement,โ he said. โThey see you as what they need now.โ His thumb brushed slowly across your knuckles. โAnd so do I.โ
That made you look at him properly. Not as a warrior. Not as a survivor. But as himself. โYou?โ you asked softly.
He nodded once. โYou bring life where there was only survival.โ Your lips partedโbut no words came.
The forest hummed around you.
Alive. Listening. Waiting.
โWhen the RDA are gone,โ Soโlek said quietly, as though testing the thought, โwhat will you do?โ
You blinked, caught off guard. โIโฆ do not know.โ
A small, rare smile touched his lips.โI think you do.โ
Your heart stumbled. โโฆSay it.โ
He leaned closer, his voice lowering to something meant only for you. โPerhaps you will not only care for those who were left behind,โ he murmured. His gaze softenedโopen, unguarded. โPerhaps we will have little ones of our own.โ
The world seemed to still. Your breath hitched, something fragile and bright unfolding in your chest. โYou would want that?โ you whispered.
Soโlek did not hesitate. โYes.โ Simple. Certain. Like everything he meant.
Your fingers tightened around his. โThen we survive,โ you said, steadier now. Stronger.
โFor them,โ he agreed. โAnd for us.โ
From the distance, a voice calledโ โMa!โ You smiled before you could stop yourself.
โI should go,โ you said.
Soโlek released your hand, though reluctantly. โI will watch over you.โ
You squeezed his fingers once before slipping away. โI know.โ
And as he watched you return to themโkneeling among them, laughing softly, gathering them close as though they had always belonged to youโ he allowed himself, just for a moment, to believe they truly did.
He stood where you had left him, the cool water slipping past his ankles, his gaze fixed on you amongst them. You did not stand above the Sarentu. You folded into themโinto their laughter, their quiet questions, their unspoken needsโas though you had always been meant to fill that space.
Not as a leader. Not as a warrior. But as something far rarer.
โSaโnu, lookโโ Riโnelaโs voice carried first, bright and eager as she held up a small cluster of woven fibres she had clearly attempted herself. Uneven. Crooked.
You took it as though it were something precious. โIt is good,โ you said gently, adjusting a strand with careful fingers. โBut hereโtighten this, or it will come apart.โ
Nor lingered close, watching, before speaking low enough for only you to hear. โIt is quieter today,โ he said. โIn my head.โ
You glanced at him, something soft and knowing in your expression. โGood,โ you murmured. โThen we will keep it that way.โ
Tamtey said nothing, only settled beside you, shoulder brushing yours. That, too, was an answer.
Soโlek exhaled slowly. He had seen many things in his lifeโwar, loss, survival carved from nothingโbut thisโฆThis quiet rebuilding. This fragile, stubborn healingโฆIt was unfamiliar.
And yet, he found himself unwilling to look away.
โYou stare again.โ The voice came from behind him this timeโsharp, measured. Alma Cortez stepped lightly across the ground in her dreamwalker body, though there was nothing natural in the movement.
Soโlek did not turn. โI observe,โ he said evenly.
Alma followed his gaze, her expression tightening almost imperceptibly. โThey are becoming dependent,โ she said. โIt will weaken them.โ
โNo,โ Soโlek replied. โIt will remind them they are not alone.โ
โThey cannot afford that kind of attachment.โ
โThey already have it.โ That made her pause.
โThey need discipline,โ Alma insisted. โFocus. Not thisโฆ illusion of family.โ
Soโlekโs jaw tightened slightly. โIt is not an illusion.โ
Almaโs gaze flicked back to him. โYou think this will last?โ
โI think,โ he said slowly, โit is the only reason they will.โ
She did not answer immediately. And in that silence, the distance between what she understoodโand what she refused toโfelt vast.
โThey are not children,โ she said again, quieter now.
โNo,โ Soโlek agreed, his gaze never leaving you. โBut they should have been.โ
That left her with nothing more to say.
By the time Soโlek approached the group, the light had shifted. You looked up as he nearedโalways aware, always attunedโand something in your expression softened further.
โYou have come to join us?โ you teased lightly.
โI have come to see if they will allow it,โ he replied.
Riโnela brightened immediately. โYou can sit.โ
Nor gave a small nod.
Tamtey shifted just enough to make space.
You smiled at thatโsoft, pleasedโand reached out, your fingers brushing briefly against Soโlekโs wrist as he settled beside you. A small touch. But grounding.
โThey were telling me about their training,โ you said.
โWere they?โ Soโlek glanced between them.
โYes,โ you continued, amusement threading your voice. โThough I suspect some details wereโฆ altered.โ
Teylan looked mildly offended. โThey were not.โ
Nor muttered, โThey were.โ Riโnela laughed. And just like thatโlightness.
Soโlek watched you again, but this time from within it. The way your laughter softened the edges of everything around you. The way they leaned into it. The way he did, without even realising.
Later, when the others drifted away one by oneโdrawn by food, rest, or the quiet pull of eveningโyou remained where you were, your gaze following them until the last disappeared into the trees.
โYou worry,โ Soโlek said quietly.
โI care,โ you corrected. A pause. โโฆBut yes.โ
He shifted closer. โThey are stronger than they were.โ
โI know.โ
โAnd they are not alone.โ
Your shoulders lowered slightly. โI know,โ you repeated, softer.
The sky dimmed above, the forest settling into its night-song. For a while, neither of you spoke.
Then, quietly: โIf we have childrenโฆโ Your voice waveredโnot with doubt, but with the weight of hope itself.
Soโlek turned slightly towards you. โThey will not know this kind of fear,โ he said. It was not a wish. It was a promise.
You studied him, something deep and searching in your gaze. โAnd if they do?โ
โThen they will not face it alone.โ
That settled something in you. He could see it. The same way he had seen it that first night, when a single fragile word had changed everything.
โSaโnu!โ The call came againโfaint, but insistent.
You huffed softly, though your smile returned just as quickly. โThey will not let me rest.โ
โNo,โ Soโlek said, a trace of warmth in his voice. โThey will not.โ
You rose, brushing your hands lightly against your thighs before glancing back at him.
โCome with me,โ you said. It was not a request. Soโlek stood without hesitation. And this time when you returned to them he did not remain apart. He walked by your side.
Summary: A quiet day on the plains with Nesim and your favourite Zakru turns into something softer than either of you expected.

The plains stretched endlessly beneath a sky painted in warm gold and drifting violet, the grasses whispering as they bent with the breeze. Out here, where the Zeswa clan ran with the wind and travelled with the great zakru, life felt wide and unboundโjust as Eywa intended.
You lay back against the sun-warmed earth, fingers tangled lazily in the thick, coarse hair of Zakrus. The great beast huffed contentedly, shifting slightly but making no effort to move away. He liked the attentionโno, he expected it.
โYou spoil him,โ a voice murmured nearby. You didnโt need to look to know it was Nesim.
โI spoil both of you,โ you replied, eyes still closed, letting the sunlight soak into your skin.
A soft snort. โI do not require spoiling.โ But you could hear the faint smile in her voice.
Moments later, her shadow fell over you, blocking the sun just enough to make you crack one eye open. Nesim stood tall as ever, posture straight, presence commandingโthe very image of a Zeswa warrior. Her armor caught the light, and her gaze, sharp and observant, flicked briefly to the Zakru before settling on you.
โYou are supposed to be resting,โ she added.
โI am resting,โ you said, reaching up without hesitation, fingers catching her wrist. โCome here.โ
There was a pause. Nesim was not one to be commandedโnot by anyone. And yetโฆ her stance softened. With a quiet exhale, she lowered herself beside you, movements controlled but unguarded in a way only you ever saw. The Zakru shifted again, nudging closer as if making room for her, his massive head settling near your side.
โSee?โ you murmured. โEven he agrees.โ
โI think he simply wishes for more attention,โ she said, though her tone had lost its edge. You hummed, then gently tugged her down until her shoulder brushed yours. She resisted for only a heartbeat before relenting, allowing herself to leanโjust slightlyโagainst you.
For a while, there was only the wind and the steady rhythm of the Zakrusโ breathing. Your fingers drifted from his mane to Nesimโs arm, tracing the lines of muscle beneath her skin, the faint scars that told stories of hunts and battles. She tensed at firstโinstinctโbut slowly, gradually, she relaxed beneath your touch.
โYou are quiet,โ she said after a time.
โIโm enjoying this,โ you replied. โYou should try it.โ
โI am,โ she said, almost defensively. You smiled softly, turning your head to look at her. Up close, the fierceness of her expression gave way to something more subtleโsomething softer, reserved only for moments like this.
โLiar.โ
Her eye narrowed, but there was no real heat in it. โCareful.โ Instead of answering, you leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss just beneath her jaw. That got her attention.
Her breath hitchedโjust barelyโand her hand came to your arm, gripping it with quiet intensity. โYou are bold today.โ
โOnly with you.โ Another kiss, softer this time, lingering. Nesim exhaled slowly, tension slipping from her shoulders. Her grip loosened, her thumb brushing absentmindedly against your skin.
โYou areโฆ distracting,โ she admitted.
You laughed quietly. โAnd you love it.โ She didnโt answer right away.
Instead, she turned her head just enough to meet your gazeโand then, unexpectedly, she leaned in, pressing a brief, careful kiss to your lips. It was restrained, almost hesitant, but unmistakably hers. When she pulled back, her expression had returned to its usual composed strengthโbut her eyes betrayed her. โโฆPerhaps,โ she said.
The Zakru snorted loudly beside you, as if unimpressed with how little attention he was receiving now. You both laughedโNesim softly, you more freelyโand you reached back to scratch behind his ear ridge. โDonโt worry,โ you murmured to him. โThereโs enough of me for both of you.โ Nesim huffed at that, but didnโt move away as you settled together beneath the open sky.
The sun drifted higher, warming the plains until the air shimmered faintly above the grasses. Time moved slowly hereโunmeasured, unbothered. The kind of stillness the Zeswa rarely allowed themselves, always chasing the next horizon. But not today. Today, Nesim had not moved. That alone felt like a quiet victory.
You shifted slightly, propping yourself up on one elbow to look at her. Her eyes were closed now, her breathing even, though you knew she wasnโt truly asleepโjust resting in that careful way she did, always aware, always ready. Exceptโฆ not quite as ready as usual. Your fingers brushed along her shoulder again, slower this time, tracing idle patterns. She didnโt tense. Didnโt correct you. Progress.
โYou are watching me,โ she said without opening her eye.
โMaybe,โ you replied lightly. โYouโre interesting.โ
โI am resting.โ
โAnd doing a very good job of it,โ you teased. A faint flick of her ear gave her away.
The Zakru let out a low rumble, shifting his weight so his massive body pressed more firmly against your legs, effectively trapping you both in place. His tail flicked lazily through the grass. โAh,โ you said. โNow we cannot move. What a shame.โ
Nesim huffed softly. โHe has decided.โ
โThen we obey.โ Silence returned, but it was an easy oneโfilled with warmth and the soft sounds of the plains. A distant call of riders, the rustle of wind, the steady presence of Zakrus anchoring you both.
After a while, Nesim spoke again, quieter now. โThis isโฆ not unpleasant.โ
You turned your head toward her, smile softening. โHigh praise.โ
โYou will not let me forget I said that.โ
โNever.โ Her eyes opened then, meeting yoursโsharp as ever, but gentled at the edges. There was something searching in her gaze, something unspoken.
โYou areโฆ different here,โ she said.
โHere?โ
โIn stillness.โ A pause. โWith me.โ
You considered that, fingers idly brushing over the back of her hand now, letting your touch linger more deliberately. โI think,โ you said slowly, โthis is just another way of being strong.โ
Her brow furrowed slightly. โExplain.โ
โYou fight. You lead. You endure.โ You shifted closer, your voice softer. โBut thisโletting yourself rest, letting someone close enough to see you like thisโthat takes strength too.โ
Nesim was quiet for a long moment. Then her hand turned beneath yours, fingers curling just enough to hold. โI do not do this with others,โ she said.
โI know.โ
Her grip tightened slightly, grounding, certain. โOnly you.โ The words settled between you, heavier than they should have beenโbut not unwelcome.
You leaned in again, slower this time, giving her space to pull away if she wished. She didnโt.
Your lips met hers in another gentle kissโwarmer now, more certain. Her hand came up to your jaw, not rough, but firm, steadying you as she returned it with quiet intensity. For a heartbeat, the world narrowed to just thatโsunlight, breath, closeness.
Then the Zakru made an impatient, rumbling sound, nudging you both insistently with his head. You broke apart with a quiet laugh, forehead resting briefly against hers. โI think we are being reminded,โ you murmured, โthat we are not alone.โ
Nesim exhaled, something close to amusement slipping through. โHe is jealous.โ
โOf course he is.โ You reached out, pressing both hands into the thick hide of Zakrus, scratching firmly. He huffed in satisfaction, settling again, though his eye remained half-openโwatching.
โDemanding,โ Nesim muttered.
โYou love him.โ
โโฆPerhaps.โ You smiled at the echo of her earlier answer. The sun began its slow descent, painting the plains in deeper gold. Eventually, the clan would call, and the rhythm of life would pull Nesim back into motion. But not yet. For now, she remained beside youโno armor between you, no distance, no urgency. Just warmth, quiet, and the steady, grounding presence of something shared.
The light softened as the day began to turn, gold deepening into amber across the endless plains. The wind cooled just enough to carry the scent of distant herds, of earth and sky mingling in that way that always reminded you where you belonged. Nesim shifted beside you at last. Not awayโbut closer. Her shoulder pressed more fully against yours, her leg brushing yours where you lay half-curled against the Zakrusโ side. It was subtle, the kind of movement no one else would noticeโbut you did. You always did.
โYou are thinking,โ she said quietly.
You hummed. โAlways.โ
โAbout what?โ
You tilted your head slightly, studying her. The setting light caught along the lines of her face, softening the sharpness she carried so easily. Out here, like this, she looked less like a warrior carved from stoneโand more like something warm, something real.
โThis,โ you said simply.
Her brow knit faintly. โThis?โ
โThis moment. You. Him.โ You reached back, giving the Zakru a firm pat as if to include him. His tail flicked in approval. โItโsโฆ enough.โ Nesim was quiet again, her gaze drifting out across the plains.
โFor the Zeswa,โ she said slowly, โthere is always movement. Always the next path. The next challenge.โ
โI know.โ
โIt is strange,โ she continued, โto stay.โ
You smiled faintly. โAnd yetโฆ you did.โ
Her eyes shifted back to you, something steady and certain in them now. โI chose to.โ
The words were simpleโbut they carried weight. You reached up, brushing your fingers lightly along her cheek, thumb tracing just beneath her eye. This time, she leaned into it without hesitation. A small thing. A big thing.
โIโm glad,โ you murmured.
Her hand came to rest over yours, holding it there against her skin. โSo am I.โ
The wind picked up again, tugging gently at your braids, whispering through the grasses like a distant song. The Zakru rumbled low in his chest, content, unmovingโyour living shelter against the cooling air. You shifted, settling more comfortably against him, and Nesim followed without needing to be asked. Her arm came across youโnot restraining, not protective, justโฆ there. Solid. Present. For a long moment, neither of you spoke.
Then, quietlyโ โYou will ride with me tomorrow,โ she said.
You glanced up at her, a hint of teasing returning. โIs that an order?โ
A faint smirk touched her lips. โAn invitation.โ
โMm. Much better.โ Her thumb brushed absently against your arm, a small, unconscious motion that made your chest feel warmer than the fading sun.
โThere is a high ridge,โ she continued, her voice softer now, โwhere the winds are strongest. You can see all the plains from there.โ
โSounds like your kind of place.โ
โIt is,โ she admitted. Then, after a pauseโโI want to show you.โ
You studied her for a second, something quiet and fond settling in your chest again. โIโd like that.โ
Another small silence.
Then you leaned in once more, pressing a slow, gentle kiss to the corner of her mouthโlingering just enough to feel her soften again beneath it. This time, she didnโt hesitate at all. Her hand came to your jaw, steady and sure, guiding you into a proper kissโstill gentle, still restrained in that very her wayโbut warmer than before, more certain. When she pulled back, her forehead rested briefly against yours.
โYou are very distracting,โ she murmured again, softer this time.
โAnd you keep letting me be.โ
โโฆYes.โ
The Zakru let out a long, satisfied breath, as if approving of the arrangement, and settled deeper into the grass. The sun dipped lower.
And for just a little while longer, the world could wait.
Summary: You were supposed to fly together that night. Instead, you find him kneeling in the aftermath, Zomey gone and the bond severed. So you do the only thing you can. You stay.
Cherrie's Notes: This was one of the requests from one of you guys! "Z" my pookie, my beloved, hope you like this! The others will follow.
AFOP Masterlist
The day began softly.
You woke to warmthโsteady, familiar, grounding. Ituโs arm was draped over your waist, his breath slow against the back of your neck. The light filtering through the woven walls of your alcove painted everything in gentle gold. For a moment, you didnโt move. You just listenedโto him, to the distant hum of Hometree waking, to the quiet rhythm of a life that felt safe.
โYou are awake,โ Itu murmured, voice still heavy with sleep.
โI have been,โ you teased softly, turning slightly in his hold. โYou were holding me captive.โ
A quiet huff of amusement left him, his fingers brushing along your arm in a lazy, absent motion. โAh. Then I will not apologize.โ
You smiled, leaning into him before finally pulling away to begin the day.
It was easyโbeing with him. The soft laughter as you both dressed, the gentle bump of shoulders as you moved around each other, the shared meal where your knees brushed beneath you. You spoke in low voices about the day aheadโhis plans to hunt, yours to remain with Nefika and continue weaving.
โAnd later?โ you asked, tilting your head.
Ituโs eyes softened instantly. โWe fly.โ
A grin spread across your face. โThe floating mountains?โ
He nodded. โZomey has been restless. She will like it.โ
โAnd my bonded will race her,โ you added playfully.
โThey will lose.โ
You laughed, nudging him. โWe will see.โ
It was simple. It was certain. You would meet again before the eclipse of the day and fly together as you always did.
โ
Hometree settled into its rhythm as the morning passed.
You sat beside Nefika, fingers working through fibers with practiced ease. The motions were familiar, soothingโpull, twist, weave. Nefika spoke occasionally, correcting or guiding, though her tone carried quiet approval.
โYou are distracted,โ she noted at one point, not unkindly.
You exhaled softly. โOnly thinking.โ
โOf him.โ
It wasnโt a question.
A small smile tugged at your lips. โWe are to fly later.โ
Nefika hummed. โThen your hands should focus now, so your mind may be free then.โ
You nodded, trying to ground yourself in the task again.
But something feltโฆ off.
It wasnโt anything you could name. Just a subtle unease beneath your ribs, like a thread pulled too tight. You shifted slightly, glancing toward the open spaces of Hometree, listening beyond the usual sounds.
Thenโfootsteps. Fast. Uneven. You turned just as one of the Sarentu approachedโTamtey. They weren't supposed to be here. Your hands stilled. They looked at you like they didnโt know how to speak.
โWhat is it?โ you asked immediately, rising to your feet.
Tamtey swallowed. โItuโโ Your heart lurched.
โWhat about him?โ
โThere was an RDA patrol,โ they said quickly, voice strained. โNear the hunting grounds. Heโhe was not aloneโZomeyโโ The world narrowed.
โNo,โ you breathed.
โThey attacked,โ Tamtey continued, the words rushing now. โWe found himโbutโโ You didnโt wait for the rest. The weaving fell from your hands as you turned, already moving, already running.
โโZomey is deadโโ The words chased you, but you were gone.
The air rushed past you as you leapt, your bonded answering your call instantly. The connection snapped into placeโfear, urgency, your racing pulse all spilling into them.
Go.
They launched without hesitation. The world blurred beneath youโtrees, cliffs, riversโnone of it mattered. You pushed faster, harder, ignoring the strain, ignoring everything except the direction Tamtey had given.ย
Please. Your thoughts werenโt even words anymoreโjust raw, desperate feeling. Please let him be alive. Please let him beโ
You felt it before you saw it.
A disturbance. A silence where there shouldnโt be.
Smoke lingered faintly in the air.
And thenโyou saw him.
Itu was kneeling. Still. Too still.
Your bonded landed before you fully registered it, your body moving before thought could catch up. You stumbled forward, breath catching as the scene came into focus.
Zomey lay crumpled nearby. Her formโstill, unmovingโwrong in a way that made your chest seize.
โNoโฆโ Your voice broke. Itu didnโt respond. You rushed to him, dropping to your knees at his side. โItuโโ
His hands were still resting against Zomey, trembling faintly. His head was bowed, braids falling forward, shoulders rigid like stone.
โItu,โ you tried again, softer this time. Slowlyโtoo slowlyโhe looked up. And your heart shattered. There was something hollow in his eyes. Not emptyโworse than that. Filled with something too heavy to hold.
โThey came from the sky,โ he said, voice rough, distant. โI did not hear them soon enough.โ
Your hand reached for him, gripping his arm. โYou are alive.โ
โShe protected me.โ The words hit like a blade. โI should haveโโ
โNo.โ Your voice was firm, shaking but unyielding. โDo not say that.โ
His gaze flickered to you, then back to Zomey. โI felt her fear,โ he whispered. โAnd thenโฆ nothing.โย
You swallowed hard, your own vision blurring as you looked at her. At the stillness. At the bond that had been severed so violently. Gently, you moved closer, pressing yourself against him, your arms wrapping around his shoulders. For a moment, he didnโt react.
Thenโhe broke.
His head dropped against you, breath hitching as his body finally gave in to the grief he had been holding back. You held him tighter, one hand coming up to cradle the back of his head, fingers threading through his braids.
โI am here, ma yawntuโ you murmured, over and over. โI am here.โ The wind whispered through the trees, carrying the scent of smoke away. You stayed like that for a long timeโkneeling beside loss, holding what remained.
Together.
The world did not move.
It felt as though Eywa herself had stilled everything around youโno wind, no distant calls, no rustling leavesโonly the sound of Ituโs uneven breathing against you and the faint, fading warmth of a bond that had been torn away.
You did not rush him. Grief had its own rhythm. You would not break it.
Your hand continued its slow, grounding motion along his back, the other still cradling his head where it rested against your shoulder. His fingers remained curled against Zomeyโs side, as if letting go would make this final in a way he could not yet face.
โShe was afraid,โ he said hoarsely after a long silence. You closed your eyes briefly.
โI felt it,โ he continued, voice cracking. โThrough tsaheylu. It was so suddenโฆ confusionโฆ painโฆโ His breath hitched sharply. โAnd I could not reach her.โ
Your grip tightened slightly. โYou were there.โ
โIt was not enough.โ
โItuโโ
โI am her rider,โ he snapped suddenly, pulling back just enough to look at you. The anguish in his eyes burned. โI am meant to protect her. She trusted me, and Iโโ
โYou loved her,โ you said firmly, cutting through the spiral before it could drag him under. โShe knew that.โ His jaw clenched, but he didnโt look away. โYou think she chose to protect you because you failed her?โ you continued, softer now but no less steady. โNo. She chose because you are hers. Because your lives were one.โ His expression faltered. Slowly, your hand moved from his hair to his cheek, grounding him, forcing him to stay with you. โShe did not die alone,โ you whispered. โShe died with you. With your bond. With your love.โ
The words seemed to crack something open in himโsomething quieter, deeper than the sharp edge of guilt. His shoulders sagged slightly, breath shuddering as he looked back at Zomey. For a while, neither of you spoke. Then, carefully, you shifted. โWe should not leave her here.โ
Ituโs eyes flickered. โNoโฆโ
โShe deserves to return to Eywa properly,โ you continued. โNot like this. Not after what they did.โ At that, something steadied in him. A purpose.
He nodded once, slowly, โYes.โ
It took time.
You stayed beside him as he worked, never leaving his side. Together, you prepared Zomey with the care she deservedโremoving what should not remain, arranging her with reverence, hands gentle despite the weight of what you were doing. Every movement was heavy with meaning. Every touch, a farewell. When it was done, you both sat back, the light beginning to shift toward evening.
โWe will take her to the roots,โ Itu said quietly. โTo a place she can be heard.โ
You nodded. โI will fly with you.โ
His gaze softened slightly at that. โYou do not have toโโ
โI know,โ you said. โI want to.โ
A pause.
Then, finallyโhe leaned forward, resting his forehead briefly against yours. A quiet, wordless thank you.
The flight back was slower.
Different.
Zomeyโs absence was a silence that echoed between you both. Where there should have been another presence in the sky, there was only open air. Your bonded felt it tooโyou sensed their unease, their confusionโbut they stayed steady beneath you, strong and sure. When you reached the sacred place, the world feltโฆ listening. The roots of the great trees curled deep into the earth, glowing faintly with life. The air was thick with something ancient, something knowing.
Together, you carried her.
Together, you laid her to rest. Itu hesitated before making the final connectionโhis hand hovering, trembling slightly.
โI do not know if she will hear me,โ he admitted quietly.
You stepped closer, placing your hand over his, โEywa will.โ
That was enough.
He closed his eyes, making the connection. The moment it happened, his breath caught sharply. You felt it tooโnot directly, but through him. A shift. A presence. Something vast and gentle and sorrowful all at once.
His shoulders shook. โShe is there,โ he whispered, voice breaking. โI can feelโฆ echoesโฆ memoriesโฆโ Tears slipped freely down his face now, but there was something else beneath them. Not just grief.
Connection.
You stayed with him the entire time, your presence steady, unwavering. When he finally pulled away, he didnโt collapse this time. He leaned into you. And you held him.
Night had begun to fall by the time you left. The stars emerged slowly above, quiet and distant. Itu walked beside you in silence for a while before speaking.
โI do not know how to do this again,โ he admitted. โTo bondโฆ to flyโฆ without her.โ
โYou do not have to know now,โ you replied gently. He glanced at you. โYou only have to take the next step.โ
A pause.
Then, quietly: โWith you?โ
You reached for his hand, intertwining your fingers with his. โWith me. We will honour her last flight together when the grief is not as sharp.โ For the first time since you had found him, his grip tightened in return. And though the loss remainedโsharp, aching, undeniableโyou felt it then:
He was still here. And you would not let him face it alone.
The night wrapped around you both like a quiet witness.
By the time you returned to Hometree, the world had dimmed into soft blues and deep shadows. The usual warmth of home feltโฆ different. Muted. As if it, too, understood what had been lost. Word had already spread.
You felt it in the way voices hushed as you passed, in the glancesโsoft, sorrowful, respectful. No one stopped you. No one spoke. They didnโt need to. Grief was understood here.
Your hand never left Ituโs.
Your alcove felt smaller somehow. Or perhaps it was the absence that made it feel that way.
You paused at the entrance, turning slightly toward him. โYou should rest.โ
Itu didnโt answer at first. His gaze drifted across the spaceโlingering on the woven blankets, the small things you had both left behind that morning, untouched. Unchanged. Like the day had not shattered in between.
โI left this morning,โ he said quietly. โAnd she was alive.โ Your chest tightened. โI thought about the hunt,โ he continued. โAbout returning to you. About flying later.โ His jaw clenched faintly. โI did not think it would be the last time I would feel her.โ
You stepped closer, โYou did not know,โ you said gently.
โI should have,โ he whispered.
You didnโt argue this time. Instead, you reached up, resting your forehead against hisโjust like he had done before. โYou came back,โ you murmured. โYou are here. With me.โ
A long pause.
Then, slowly, his hands came upโhesitant at first, like he wasnโt sure he was allowed to hold onto anything anymore. But when they settled at your waist, they tightened. Not desperate. But grounding.
โI do not feel her,โ he admitted, voice barely above a breath. โIt isโฆ quiet.โ
You swallowed, heart aching at the emptiness behind those words. โI know,โ you said softly. โI have heard others speak of it. When a bond is brokenโฆโ You hesitated, choosing your words carefully. โIt leaves an echo. A silence where something once was.โ
His grip tightened slightly, โIt hurts.โ
โI know.โ
You guided him down to sit, pulling him gently with you. The two of you settled together, the familiar closeness returning in a quieter, more fragile way. For a while, you simply stayed like that. Then, after a long silence, Itu spoke again. โI do not think I can fly,โ he said. The words were steady. Certain. Not a question. Your chest achedโbut you nodded.
โThen you will not.โ His eyes flickered to yours, searchingโalmost bracing, as if expecting disappointment. But there was none. โYou will when you are ready,โ you added. โOr you will not. Either wayโฆ you are still you.โ Something in his expression softenedโjust a little.
โYou make it sound simple.โ
โIt is not,โ you said honestly. โBut you do not have to decide everything tonight.โ
A faint exhale left himโalmost a broken laugh, โYou always say that.โ
โAnd you never listen.โ That earned the smallest ghost of a smile. It didnโt last long. But it was there.
Later, when the night deepened and exhaustion finally began to settle into his bones, you lay back togetherโjust as you had that morning. But everything had changed. Itu hesitated before pulling you close again, as if unsure whether he could reach for comfort after what had happened. You didnโt give him time to doubt. You shifted into him, tucking yourself against his chest, your arm draping across him as you had done countless times before.
โI am here,โ you murmured again, softer now. โMa yawntu.โ His arms wrapped around you more firmly this time. Not loose. Not uncertain. Holding. As if he needed to remind himself you were real.
โI was afraid,โ he admitted into your hair.
Your heart skipped. โOf what?โ
โThat I would not come back.โ A pause. โOr that I wouldโฆ and there would be nothing left of me to give you.โ
You pulled back just enough to look at him, your hand coming up to his cheek again. โYou are still here,โ you said, steady and sure. โAll of you. Even the parts that hurt.โ
His gaze searched yours, โAnd if they are broken?โ
โThen I will sit with you while they mend.โ
Silence. Thenโhe leaned into your touch.
Sleep did not come easily. Not for him. You felt it in the way he stirred, in the tension that would creep back into his body, in the quiet moments where his breath would hitch as memory returned unbidden. Each time, you held him. Each time, you grounded him back into the presentโinto you. At some point, in the deepest part of the night, his grip loosened just slightly. His breathing evened out, not peacefulโbut resting. You stayed awake a little longer, listening.
To him.
To Hometree.
To the distant, ever-present hum of Eywa. And silently, you made a promise. To Zomey. To him. You would help him find the sky again.

แฏค author's note: teylan rizz god? i think so! i'm so obsessed with him it's not even funny and i blame my moots. you know who you are.
โAre you a bug? Because you just broke my system!โ
Teylanโs voice cracked on the final syllable, the high-pitched vibration of his vocal cords betraying the absolute terror masquerading as confidence.ย
He stood rigid, his tail lashing behind him like a whip caught in a gale, while his large, amber eyes scanned your face for a signโany signโthat his foray into human-adjacent flirting hadn't just destroyed the bridge he spent years building.ย
You erupted. The sound of your laughter was a sudden, melodic explosion that echoed off the cold metal walls of the Resistance base, clashing with the nature of the surrounding flora. You slapped a hand over your mouth, but the mirth leaked through your fingers in sharp, rhythmic gasps. Your eyes crinkled at the corners, blurring with the onset of joyful tears as you watched his complexion shift from its natural azure to a deep, bruised violet.
โOh, no, no,โ Teylan groaned, his shoulders slumping until he seemed to shrink several inches. He squeezed his eyes shut, his long lashes fluttering against his cheekbones. In his trembling hands, he clutched a bizarre, intricate deviceโa fusion of RDA scrap metal and bioluminescent seeds from Kinglor Forest. It looked like a mechanical flower that hummed with a low, electric pulse, its petals twitching in a rhythmic sequence he had clearly programmed with agonizing care.ย
โThat was... that was terrible. I practiced that for three hours. Riโnela said to be myself, but she also said Sarentu traditions involve a certain... flair. I thought a human metaphor would bridge the gap.โ
For weeks, the rumors had been circulating through the clan like wildfire through a dry thicket. Teylan had been cornering the other Sarentu survivors, his questions frantic and his hands sketching invisible blueprints in the air. He had spent hours shadowed under Riโnelaโs patient gaze, listening to her describe the Weaverโs songs and the traditional exchange of gifts. He wanted to do it rightโthe Sarentu wayโbut his heart was still half-tethered to the technology he had been raised with. He was a creature of two worlds, trying to build a landing pad for his feelings in the middle of a war zone.
โI have more!โ he blurted out, his panic escalating as your laughter showed no signs of receding. He took a desperate step forward, the smell of his nervous sweatโa sharp, citrusy muskโcutting through the scent of the sandalwood incense someone had lit nearby.ย
โWait! Don't leave! Are you a... a firmware update? Because every time I see you, I feel like I'm becoming a better version of myself!โ
You doubled over, a stitch forming in your side. The absurdity of it, the raw, unadulterated earnestness in his face, was more than your composure could handle. Teylanโs ears flattened against his skull, and a small, wounded whine escaped his throatโa sound that was half-mechanical glitch and half-kittenโs cry.
โPlease stop laughing,โ he pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate, melodic trill. โIโm trying to follow the protocols! I even calibrated the luminescence on the gift to match the hue of your favorite flower! If your heart was a hard drive, Iโd... Iโd never want to format it!โ
โTeylan, paskalin (honey), stop,โ you managed to wheeze out, reaching out to steady yourself. You placed a hand on his broad shoulder, feeling the heat radiating through his skin. The muscle beneath your palm was taut, vibrating with a frantic energy that made you realize this wasn't just a joke to him. His chest was heaving, the rhythmic movement of his ribs pressing against the air with a heavy, weighted significance.
โIโm trying to court you!โ Teylan suddenly shrieked, the confession bursting out of him like a pressurized steam vent. The corridor fell into a sudden, vacuum-like silence. The ambient chatter from the nearby mess hallโthe clinking of metal trays and the low murmur of So'lek's voiceโseemed to vanish, replaced by the loud, thumping rhythm of your own pulse in your ears.
You froze. Your hand remained on his shoulder, your fingers curling slightly into the blue skin.
Teylanโs eyes widened, the pupils expanding until the amber irises were mere slivers of gold. The realization of what heโd just shouted seemed to hit him like a physical blow. His knees buckled, and before you could react, he collapsed to the floor.
He didn't just sit; he fell to his knees with a heavy thud, the impact vibrating through the floorboards. He dropped the mechanical flowerโwhich continued to hum and glow a soft, pulsating pinkโand wrapped his long, powerful arms around your leg, burying his face against your thigh.
โI ruined it,โ he sobbed, the sound muffled by your clothing. โIโm sorry. Iโm so sorry. Iโm a failure. A glitch. Iโm just a Sarentu who doesn't know how to be a Sarentu and a human who isn't human. Please don't go. I worked so hard on the code. I just wanted you to see me.โ
Your heart felt like it was being squeezed by a cold, insistent hand. The sight of himโthis brilliant, sensitive soul who could rebuild a mainframe but couldn't navigate a simple conversationโshattered the last of your amusement. You reached down, your fingers disappearing into the thick, dark thatch of his hair. It felt like silk and forest floor, surprisingly soft despite the disorder of his day.
โTeylan, look at me,โ you whispered, your voice trembling with seriousness. He didn't move, his grip on your leg tightening until you could feel the individual pressure of his fingers. You slowly sank down, your joints protesting the movement, until you were eye-level with him in the dim, blue-tinted light of the hallway.
You reached out and grasped his wrists, gently prying his hands away from your leg. His skin was feverish, the pulse in his wrists erratic and fast, like the wings of a trapped bird. When he finally lifted his head, his face was a map of devastation.
โItโs okay,โ you said, your voice a steady anchor in his storm. โTeylan, itโs really okay. You didn't ruin anything. โฆ your attempts? Theyโre the cutest thing Iโve ever seen.โ
Teylanโs entire body went still. The lashing of his tail stopped mid-air. He stared at you, his mouth slightly agape, eyes teary. โReally?โ he whispered, the word carrying a fragile hope that made your chest ache.ย
You felt the heat climbing up your own neck, a flush that mirrored his earlier embarrassment. You gave him a small, watery smile, your thumbs tracing circles on the insides of his wrists. โReally.โ
A sudden, manic energy seemed to flood back into him. He began to ramble, the words tumbling out in a chaotic, linguistic soup you kinda didn't understand. โI asked Riโnela about the songs, but I couldn't find the right notes, so I thought maybe a frequency sweep would work, and then Eetu told me to hunt something impressive, but I didn't want to kill anything today because I was busy soldering the LED array for the gift, and I thought if I used the pick-up lines from that old human database I found in the archivesโโ
You didn't let him finish. You leaned forward, cupping his face in both of your hands. His skin felt like velvet, the high cheekbones sharp against your palms. You silenced the frantic stream of tech-jargon by pressing your lips firmly against his.
Teylan made a sound deep in his throat as he melted into you. His body, previously a cord of tension, went soft and pliable. He tasted like the sweet nectar of the Darsana fruit heโd been snacking on earlier and the clean, ozone scent of a coming storm. His hands came up to cover yours, his long fingers trembling as he pulled you closer, his breath hitching in his chest. The kiss was messy and desperate and perfect, a physical bridge built between two very cringey souls.
When you finally pulled back, only inches away from his glowing, wide-eyed face, you were the one giggling now. You brushed a stray lock of hair away from his forehead, your eyes tracing the intricate patterns of the bioluminescent dots that swept across his brow.
โHey, Teylan?โ you whispered, your breath ghosting over his lips.
โYes?โ he breathed, his voice one of pure adoration.
โAre you a Wi-Fi signal? Because Iโm feeling a really strong connection.โ
The night had settled into something slow and quiet.
No urgency. No movement beyond the soft rise and fall of breath, the faint shift of fabric as you lay beside each other. Outside, the sounds of the clan had long faded, leaving only the distant whisper of wind through the trees.
Solek was on his back, one arm resting behind his head, the other draped loosely across you. His body was warm, solid beneath your cheek, his breathing steadyโalmost too steady, like he was half-aware, half-lost in the calm of the moment.
You had been talking.
Nothing heavy.
Fragments of the day, small things, unfinished thoughts drifting between you without needing to land anywhere.
Until your voiceโฆ slowed.
Your hand, resting against his chest, began to moveโabsently at first.
Tracing.
Following the lines your fingers had learned without thinking.
And thenโ
You noticed it again.
The mark.
The one the war had left behind.
It ran along the side of his face, cutting faintly through his skin in a way that never fully faded. You had seen it countless times. Touched it before, even.
But tonightโฆ
You didnโt just see it.
You felt it.
Your hand lifted slowly, your fingers brushing along his jaw, then higherโuntil they reached it.
Solekโs breath shifted.
Barely.
But you felt it.
Your touch softened instinctively, your fingertips tracing the line of the scar as if mapping something delicate, something that didnโt belong to the present but refused to leave it.
He didnโt stop you.
Didnโt speak.
But his eyes moved to you, watching.
Quiet.
Attentive.
Your thumb followed the edge of it slowly.
โโฆDoes it still hurt?โ you asked softly.
He was silent for a moment.
โโฆNo.โ
A pause.
โNot like before.โ
Your gaze stayed there, your touch gentle, slower nowโnot exploringโฆ but acknowledging.
You knew what it meant.
You had your own.
Hidden in different places, some visible, some not.
Marks that didnโt ask for permission to remain.
Your fingers stilled for just a second.
Thenโ
Without thinking too much about itโ
You leaned in.
And pressed a soft kiss against the scar.
Not rushed.
Not hesitant.
Justโฆ there.
Solek froze.
Not fullyโbut enough.
You felt it immediately.
The subtle tension in his body, the way his breath caught just slightly beneath youโ
And when you pulled backโ
His eyes had changed.
His pupils were wider now, darker, his gaze locked onto yours with something deeper than quiet observation.
Somethingโฆ affected.
You blinked faintly, not expecting that reaction.
โโฆWhat?โ you murmured.
He didnโt answer right away.
His hand, the one resting against you, shiftedโsliding up your arm slowly, his fingers curling just slightly as if grounding himself.
โYou do thatโฆ like it is nothing.โ
Your brows softened. โItโs not nothing.โ
Your hand returned to his face, this time cupping his cheek fully, your thumb brushing just under the mark.
โItโs part of you.โ
His gaze didnโt waver.
โIt is not the best part.โ
โNo,โ you agreed quietly.
A small pause.
โBut itโs not something I turn away from either.โ
Your voice dropped slightly, softer now.
โI know what it costs to carry something like that.โ
For a momentโ
His expression shifted again.
Not guarded.
Not closed.
Butโฆ open, in a way he rarely allowed.
Your thumb traced once more along the scar, slower this time.
โYou look at mine the same way,โ you added quietly.
That made his grip tighten faintly.
โI do.โ
โI know.โ
You shifted slightly, lifting yourself just enough to face him more fully. Your hand guided his gently, bringing it toward your own faceโtoward one of your scars, faint but there.
โThen why is it different when I do it to you?โ
His fingers brushed your skin carefully, mirroring what you had done moments before.
โIt is not different,โ he said quietly.
A pause.
โIt is justโฆ stronger.โ
Your breath caught faintly.
โStronger?โ
His gaze softenedโnot weakeningโฆ but deepening.
โI feel it more.โ
The words settled into you slowly.
You didnโt pull away.
Instead, you leaned closer again, your forehead resting lightly against his.
โGood,โ you whispered.
A small silence followed.
Then, softerโ
โYouโre allowed to feel it.โ
His hand moved from your face to the back of your neck, holding you thereโnot tight, not demandingโ
But certain.
โAnd you?โ he asked quietly.
Your lips curved faintly, though your eyes stayed steady.
โI already do.โ
You shifted again, resting back against him, but this time closerโyour hand still on his face, your fingers no longer tracing the scar, justโฆ resting there.
And this timeโ
He didnโt just let you.
He leaned into it.
Ever so slightly.
As if your touch had turned something that once held painโฆ
Into something he no longer needed to carry alone.
Summary: You were taken, shaped, and returnedโNaโvi by birth, but not by belonging. Under Soโlekโs watchful guidance, you learn to survive the forestโฆ and yourself. He corrects you, challenges you, holds the line between mentor and something more with unwavering control. But the closer you come to understanding who you are, the harder it becomes to ignore what grows between you. He keeps his distance for a reason. Not because you are unworthyโ But because when you choose him, it must be without doubt.
Cherrie's Notes: This was something I worked on after work as I am obsessed with Avatar. I checked over everything while ill so I apologise for any mess ups.
Just a warning it is quite long!
AFOP Masterlist
The forest did not welcome you. Not at first.
It breathed around you, alive in a way the sterile halls of the TAP facility never were. The forest you should have felt at peace in instead felt distant, watchful. Every root seemed placed to trip you. Every sound made your pulse spike. You moved through it like something misplaced.
Like something wrong.
โStop.โ
Soโlekโs voice cut through the thick hum of Pandora.
You froze instantly. Stiff, as if prepared to be scolded.
He noticed.
โYou move like prey that expects punishment,โ he said, stepping past you. His stride was silent, assured, each foot placed with intention, with knowing. โThe forest is not your enemy.โ
Your jaw tightened. โIt feels like it is.โ
He glanced back at you, sharp eyes catching yours. There was no mockery in them, only quiet assessment.
โThat is because you were not raised in it.โ
The words landed heavier than you expected.
โI am aware.โ You looked away first and sighed in frustration.
Training was the obvious next step after your freedom from TAP. Finally, you had the freedom to learn the things that should have been taught in youth.
Still, you felt cautious, not wanting to part from the other Sarentuโnot like Tamtey. Not quite as confident to hit the ground running like them, but still striving to learn. To correct what the Sky People broke.
The natural choice for a trainer was Soโlek.
Training with Soโlek was not gentle.
It was not cruel, either. It simply was.
He showed you how to listen, not just hear. The subtle shift in insect calls. The way leaves stilled before a predator passed. The rhythm of wind that carried scent and warning alike.
โAgain,โ he would say when you missed something.
And you missed a lot.
Your arrow flew wide.
โAgain.โ
You stepped too loudly over a fallen branch.
โAgain.โ
You misread tracks, confusing prey for predator.
โAgain.โ
Each correction was immediate, precise. Never harsh, but never softened.
At first, it frustrated you.
โYou donโt have to watch me like Iโm going to fail every second,โ you snapped once, breath uneven after yet another failed hunt.
Soโlek didnโt react right away. He crouched instead, fingers brushing over the disturbed earth where your target had fled.
โYou are going to fail,โ he said calmly. โThat is why I watch.โ
Your ears flattened.
โThatโs not encouraging.โ
โIt is truth.โ
He stood, turning to face you fully now.
โAnd truth will keep you alive.โ
It wasnโt just survival he taught.
It was connection.
โThis is where you struggle most,โ Soโlek said one evening, as twilight settled into the forest like a held breath. โRiโnela said you struggled to connect to the tarsyu with your siblings.โ
You sat beside him near the base of a massive tree, its roots curling like protective arms. In your hands rested a small, glowing seedโone of Eywaโs countless quiet miracles.
โI donโt feel anything,โ you admitted, staring at it. โEveryone says itโsโฆ there. A presence. A connection. Butโฆโ
You clenched your fingers slightly.
โItโs justโฆ light. She does not sing for me.โ
Soโlek watched you for a long moment.
Then he reached outโnot for the seed, but for your wrist. His grip was firm, grounding.
โYou are trying to force it,โ he said. โConnection is not taken. It is given.โ
You huffed softly. โThat doesnโt help.โ
His thumb shifted slightly against your skin, subtle but enough to steady you.
โClose your eyes.โ
You hesitated.
โTrust me.โ
Something in his voice made you listenโlow and certain, warm. You closed your eyes.
โBreathe,โ he instructed.
You did.
โIn the facilityโฆ you were taught control, yes?โ
You nodded faintly.
โHere, you must learn release.โ
The forest seemed louder without sight. Alive. Surrounding.
โDo not reach for Eywa,โ Soโlek murmured. โLet Eywa reach for you.โ
You tried.
You really did.
But all you felt was yourselfโyour heartbeat, your breath, your doubt. How you were too influenced by the Sky People. How Nor was right: Eywa does not want what was tainted by metal.
โI canโtโโ
โStay.โย
The word wasnโt sharp. It wasnโt a command.
It wasโฆ steady.
So you stayed.
And for just a moment, something softened.
Not a voice. Not a vision.
Justโฆ a feeling.
Faint.
Warm.
Gone almost as soon as you noticed it.
Your eyes snapped open, looking at Soโlek with wide eyes and an even wider, excited grin. โI didโ youโฆ wow.โ
Soโlek was already watching you.
โYou felt something.โ
It wasnโt a question.
You swallowed. โMaybe.โ
A small pause.
Then, quieter, โYes.โ
Something in his posture shiftedโnot pride, not quite. But close.
A trait you shared with your Sarentu family was your inability to sit still.
You pushed boundaries.
It became a pattern.
โDonโt go alone,โ he told you.
You went anyway.
The forest seemed less hostile now, less suffocating. You wanted to proveโto him, to yourselfโthat you could handle it.
That you werenโt just TAP-raised. That you belonged.
The word echoed bitterly in your mind.
You tracked a small creature through dense undergrowth, movements quicker now, more confident. Your arrow was drawn, ready to fly.
Before you could release it, the forest changed.
Too quiet.
Too still.
Your breath caught.
Too late.
A snarl split the air.
You barely had time to turn before something lunged at you.
Crouching and curling into yourself, you dropped to the ground and braced for an impact that never came.
Soโlek moved like a strike of lightning.
The creature hit the ground hard, his blade already buried deep. The struggle ended almost as quickly as it began.
Silence returnedโor at least, you assumed it did. All you could hear was your pulse roaring in your ears.
โYou disobeyed.โ
His voice was low.
Dangerously calm.
You swallowed and looked at him challengingly. โI had it under control.โ
โYou had nothing under control.โ
You flinched.
He stepped closerโnot to threaten, but still intense. Grounded in a way that made your instability feel glaring.
โYou ignored the signs,โ he continued. โYou let your confidence blind you.โ
โI just wanted to prove I could do it!โ
โTo whom?โ he snapped.
The question hit harder than anything else.
You opened your mouth to speak, then quickly closed it again.
Because you didnโt know.
His gaze softened slightlyโbut enough.
โYou do not need to prove your worth by risking your life,โ he said.
Your chest tightened.
โYou donโt understand,โ you muttered. โThe othersโฆ they belong more. Riโnela has the certainty of a Tshaรฌk, Nor knows how he needs to be strongโnot to even mention Tamtey. They belong. They are Sarentu. Iโm not.โ
There it was.
The truth you hadnโt wanted to say. Still you refused to bring Teylan into this. He is different, he is allowed.
โIโm not like them,โ you continued, quieter now. โI donโt know what Iโm doing half the time. I donโt feel what they feel. I justโโ
Your voice faltered.
โIโm not really Naโvi. More Sky Personโฆ alien.โ
The words hung between you.
Heavy.
Wrong.
Soโlek stepped closer again, but this time slower.
Deliberate.
He reached up, his hand coming to rest against your cheek.
The contact startled you.
โYou are Naโvi,โ he said firmly.
Blinking up at him, you shook your head. โNo, Iโโ
โYou are Naโvi.โ
His voice didnโt rise. It didnโt need to.
It carried certainty like weight.
โTAP did not change what you are,โ he continued. โIt only delayed what you could become.โ
Your breath caught.
โYou think the others are stronger because of how they adapted,โ he said. โPerhaps that is trueโfor now.โ
His thumb brushed lightly against your skin.
โBut strength is built, Sarentu.โ
His gaze held yoursโsteady, unwavering.
โAnd I see yours growing.โ
Something in your chest cracked open.
You hadnโt realised how much you needed to hear that.
โHow can you be so sure?โ you whispered.
A pause.
His lips quirked into a small smile, a look you had not yet seen on the older manโs face.
โBecause I have watched you choose to try,โ he said.
Your breath hitched.
โAgain. And again. And again.โ
The faintest hint of something softer touched his expression.
โThat is not weakness.โ
The forest no longer felt so distant.
After that, something changed.
Not suddenly.
Not dramatically.
But subtly, like roots growing beneath the surface.
Soโlek still corrected you.
Still pushed you.
Still expected more.
But there were moments nowโbrief, quiet, but yours.
Where his hand would steady yours on a bowstring a second longer than necessary.
Where his voice would lower, just slightly, when speaking only to you.
Where his presence felt less like observation and more like somethingโฆ closer.
You didnโt name it.
Neither did he.
Not yet.
But it was there.
Growing.
Just like you.
Pain, you had learned, came in many forms.
There was the sharp kindโthe kind Soโlek trained you to endure. Scrapes from bark, the sting of a bowstring snapping against your forearm, the dull ache of muscles pushed too far, too fast.
That pain was simple. It passed.
This was different.
It started small.
A misstep.
You had been moving too quickly again, too focused on keeping pace, on proving that you could keep up with Soโlek without correction.
Your foot caught on a root hidden beneath the undergrowth.
You went down hard.
The impact knocked the breath from your lungs, a sharp crack of pain flaring up your side as you hit the forest floor. For a moment, the world narrowed to nothing but the rush of air you couldnโt pull in.
Soโlek was beside you instantly.
โStay still.โ
His voice was controlled, but there was something tighter beneath it.
You tried to push yourself up anyway.
โIโm fineโโ
โStay. Still.โ
The command landed firmer this time.
You froze.
Not because of the authority in his toneโ
But because of the hand at your side.
Careful.
Assessing.
His fingers pressed lightly along your ribs, and you sucked in a breath as pain flared sharp and sudden.
โThere,โ he murmured. โYou feel it.โ
โI said Iโm fine,โ you insisted, weaker this time.
โYou are not.โ
His gaze flicked up to yours, steady, unyielding.
โYou are injured.โ
The word sat heavily in your chest.
Injured meant weak.
Injured meant slowing down.
Injured meantโ
A memory slammed into you before you could stop it.
โNoโโ you muttered, more to yourself than to him.
You tried to pull away.
Soโlek didnโt let you.
His grip shiftedโnot tighter, but firmer. Grounding.
โLook at me.โ
You couldnโt.
Your chest tightened, breath coming too fast, too shallow.
โI said look at me.โ
Something in his voice cut through the spiralling edge of memory.
You forced your eyes up.
He was close.
Closer than before.
โThere is no one here but me,โ he said, low and steady. โYou are not there.โ
Your hands were shaking.
You hadnโt even noticed until he reached for them.
His larger ones enclosed yours without hesitation.
Warm.
Real.
โBreathe,โ he instructed.
You tried.
It came uneven at first, catching in your throat.
He didnโt rush you.
Didnโt let go.
โIn,โ he said quietly.
You inhaled, shaky.
โOut.โ
You exhaled.
Again.
And again.
Until the forest began to return.
Until the white walls faded.
Until the past loosened its grip on your chest.
You hadnโt realised how close youโd leaned into him.
Not until you became aware of it.
Your forehead nearly brushed his shoulder.
Your hands still held in his.
Your breathing still syncing with his steady rhythm.
The closeness hit you all at once.
You pulled back slightly, startled.
โIโsorry.โ
The words came out too fast.
Too automatic.
Something flickered in his expression.
Gone almost as quickly as it appeared.
โYou have nothing to apologise for,โ he said.
But he let go of your hands.
Immediately.
The absence of warmth was sudden.
Jarring.
He stood first.
Of course he did.
Control, as always, settling back into his posture like armour.
โYou will not continue training today,โ he said.
Your brows pulled together. โI can stillโโ
โNo.โ
Firm.
Final.
โYou will rest.โ
โI donโt needโโ
โYou do.โ
His gaze pinned you in place again.
And for onceโ
You didnโt argue.
He helped you back to camp.
Not hovering.
Not soft.
But present.
Always just close enough that if you faltered, he would catch you.
And onceโ
Only onceโ
When your step slipped slightly on uneven groundโ
His hand found your arm.
Steadying.
Lingering for half a heartbeat longer than necessary.
Before pulling away.
That night, the pain in your side dulled to a constant ache.
But it wasnโt what kept you awake.
It was your mind.
The memory.
The way it had crept in so easily, so suddenly.
The way you had lost control.
Again.
You shifted slightly where you lay, staring up through the breaks in the canopy.
Weak.
The word came unbidden.
Familiar.
Unwelcome.
A soft sound of movement pulled your attention.
Soโlek.
He wasnโt far.
Of course he wasnโt.
Sitting near the edge of the camp, half in shadow, ever watchful.
You hesitated.
Thenโ
โCouldnโt sleep either?โ
The words slipped out before you could stop them.
He didnโt turn immediately.
โI do not sleep as deeply as others,โ he replied.
You huffed faintly. โConvenient.โ
A pause.
Thenโ
โYou should be resting.โ
You shifted onto your side, wincing slightly despite yourself. โI tried.โ
Silence stretched between you.
Then, quieterโ
โDoes it everโฆ stop?โ
He glanced back at you now.
โThe memories.โ
There it was.
Laid bare between you.
His expression didnโt change much.
But something in his eyes did.
โThey become less powerful,โ he said.
โThatโs not the same thing.โ
โNo.โ
A beat.
โIt is not.โ
You swallowed.
โI hate that it still affects me,โ you admitted. โAfter everything. After being free. It stillโโ
You exhaled sharply.
โFeels like Iโm still there sometimes.โ
The words felt heavier out loud.
More real.
More shameful.
โI should be stronger than that.โ
Soโlek stood.
Crossed the small distance between you.
For a moment, you thoughtโ
Maybeโ
But he stopped just short.
Close enough to be felt.
Not close enough to touch.
โStrength is not the absence of pain,โ he said.
Your eyes lifted to his.
โIt is the ability to continue despite it.โ
You let out a quiet, humourless breath. โThat sounds like something youโve told yourself.โ
A flicker of somethingโrecognition, perhapsโpassed through his gaze.
โPerhaps.โ
Silence settled again.
Thicker this time.
You searched his face.
Waiting.
For something more.
For the same grounding presence from before.
For the warmth.
Forโ
It didnโt come.
He stepped back.
Deliberate.
Measured.
Distance re-established as if it had never been broken.
โYou will sleep,โ he said.
Your chest tightened.
Not from pain this time.
From something else.
Something sharper.
โYou donโt have to keep your distance,โ you said quietly.
The words surprised even you.
But they feltโฆ true.
His posture stilled.
Only for a moment.
Thenโ
โYes,โ he said.
He did not look at you when he addedโ
โI do.โ
You watched him return to his place at the edge of the camp.
Further now.
Not by much.
But enough.
The space between you feltโฆ intentional.
Carefully maintained.
Your mind turned it over.
The way he had held your hands.
The way he had steadied your breathing.
The way he had been thereโ
Fully.
And thenโ
Gone.
Not physically.
Butโฆ withdrawn.
Controlled.
Restrained.
Not because he didnโt feel it.
But because he did.
The realisation settled slowly.
Quietly.
He wasnโt distant by nature.
He was choosing to be.
And thatโ
Somehowโ
Hurt more than if he had never stepped close at all.
You turned onto your back again, staring up at the canopy.
The ache in your ribs pulsed softly.
But it wasnโt the only thing you felt anymore.
There was something else now.
A crack.
Small.
Barely visible.
But there.
In him.
In you.
In whatever this was becoming.
And for the first timeโ
You understood.
It wasnโt just you learning to navigate the forest.
It was both of youโ
Learning how close was too close.
And neither of you had the answer.
Yet.
You noticed it more after that night.
Once you saw it, you couldnโt unsee it.
The distance.
Not the physical kindโSoโlek was still there, still training you, still watching with that same sharp awareness that missed nothing.
But something had shifted.
Subtly.
Deliberately.
Where his hand had once steadied yours, now it stopped just short.
Where his voice had softened in quiet moments, now it remained evenโcontrolled, measured.
Where there had been something unspoken growing between youโ
There was now space.
Carefully maintained.
It was infuriating.
โYouโre overcorrecting.โ
The words left your mouth before you could stop them.
Soโlek didnโt look up from where he crouched, examining the tracks pressed into the damp earth.
โI am correcting what needs correcting,โ he replied evenly.
โThatโs not what I mean.โ
Now he looked at you.
Waiting.
You gestured vaguely between the two of you. โThis. You.โ
His expression didnโt change. โBe clear.โ
Frustration flared hotter.
โYouโve been different sinceโโ you cut yourself off, jaw tightening. โSince I got hurt.โ
โI have not.โ
โYou have.โ
The words came sharper than intended.
He stood slowly, turning to face you fully.
โIn what way?โ he asked.
Like it was a simple question.
Like it wasnโt obvious.
โYou pull back,โ you said. โEvery time things get even slightlyโโ you hesitated, searching for the word. โClose.โ
Something flickered in his gaze.
Gone almost immediately.
โYou are imagining patterns that are not there.โ
A short, disbelieving laugh escaped you. โNo. Iโm not.โ
Silence stretched.
Tight.
You took a step closer.
โYou donโt touch me anymore unless you have to,โ you continued. โYou keep everythingโฆ controlled. Like youโre afraid of something.โ
โI am not afraid.โ
It came too quickly.
Too firmly.
You seized on it.
โThen what is it?โ you pressed. โBecause this isnโt just you being a mentor. Itโs something else.โ
His jaw tightened slightly.
But he said nothing.
And thatโ
That was the final push.
โYou act like Iโm not ready,โ you said, voice rising despite yourself. โLike Iโm the one who canโt handle things.โ
His eyes narrowed, just slightly. โYou are still learningโโ
โNo,โ you cut in, shaking your head. โNot that.โ
You stepped closer again, closing the distance he kept trying to maintain.
โThis.โ
Your chest felt tight, words coming faster now, sharper.
โYou act like Iโm not readyโbut youโre the one afraid.โ
The silence that followed was immediate.
Heavy.
Soโlek didnโt move.
Didnโt speak.
For a moment, you thoughtโ
Maybe youโd gone too far.
But then he exhaled slowly.
And whatever had been thereโ
Whatever had softened, even brieflyโ
Was gone.
โYou are mistaken.โ
His voice was quieter now.
Colder.
More distant than you had ever heard it.
โI am not afraid,โ he repeated.
You frowned. โThen whyโโ
โThis conversation is over.โ
The finality in his tone hit like a wall.
You stared at him. โSo thatโs it? Youโre just going to shut it down?โ
โYes.โ
Anger flared, sharp and immediate. โThatโs not an answer.โ
โIt is the only one you will receive.โ
You let out a frustrated breath, pacing a step back before turning on him again.
โYou canโt just decide that!โ you snapped. โYou donโt get to act like somethingโs there and then pretend it isnโt!โ
His expression hardened.
โThere is nothing there.โ
The words landed like a blow.
You recoiled slightly.
Because you knewโ
You knew that wasnโt true.
โYou donโt mean that,โ you said, quieter now.
โI do.โ
Flat.
Certain.
Final.
Something in your chest twisted.
You turned away before he could see it fully settle in your expression.
โAre we done training?โ you asked, your voice steadier nowโcontrolled in a way that felt unfamiliar on you.
โYes.โ
Of course.
Efficient.
Detached.
You nodded once.
Then started walking.
You didnโt wait to see if he followed.
He didnโt.
Distance changed things.
Not all at once.
But enough.
Training becameโฆ functional.
Efficient.
Soโlek still corrected you. Still watched. Still expected more.
But he no longer lingered.
No longer allowed those quiet moments to stretch into something softer. Every interaction had a purpose nowโclean, precise, contained.
You adjusted.
You had to.
If he was going to treat you like nothing more than a studentโ
Then you would become one he couldnโt fault.
You trained harder.
Listened sharper.
Moved cleaner.
Where you once hesitated, you now acted. Where you once doubted, you pushed through it. The forest no longer felt like something watching youโ
It felt like something you moved with.
Not perfectly.
But enough.
Enough that others began to notice.
The call came at dawn.
Urgent.
Sharp.
RDA.
The word alone was enough to set everything into motion.
You were already moving before the full message had been relayedโbody reacting faster than thought, faster than memory.
Not the same as before.
Not frozen.
Not afraid.
Focused.
Smoke cut through the treeline.
Dark.
Wrong.
You slowed as you approached, senses sharpening automatically. The forest here felt disturbedโtoo loud in some places, too quiet in others.
Signs.
You saw them.
Broken branches.
Scorched earth.
Tracksโheavy, mechanical.
Your breath steadied.
Think.
Not react.
Soโlek wasnโt beside you.
The realisation hitโbut it didnโt stop you.
It couldnโt.
You moved forward anyway.
Voices.
Human.
Harsh.
The unfortunately familiar language cutting through the natural sounds of Pandora.
You crouched low, slipping between cover with deliberate care. Your bow was already in your hands, arrow notched but held.
You counted.
Three.
Noโfour.
Armed.
Distracted.
Good.
You shifted position, recalling every correction Soโlek had ever given you.
Wait for the right moment.
Do not rush the strike.
Let the forest guide you.
Your breath slowed.
In.
Out.
One of them moved further from the group.
Isolated.
You acted.
The arrow flew clean.
Silent.
True.
The soldier dropped before he could even react.
The others turnedโconfused, disoriented.
Too late.
You were already moving.
Not reckless.
Not panicked.
Controlled.
Another arrow.
Another hit.
You didnโt stay still long enough to be seenโeach movement deliberate, each step placed with intention.
Like you had been taught.
Like you had learned.
A shot rang out.
Too close.
You ducked behind cover, heart kicking hard but steady.
Different.
This time, you didnโt freeze.
You listened.
Tracked.
Adapted.
The third soldier moved toward your last positionโcareless, overconfident.
You shifted behind him.
Silent.
Your strike was quick.
Efficient.
Clean.
The last one ran.
You let him.
For half a second.
Then you gave chase.
The forest moved with you now.
Not against you.
Branches no longer caught at your limbs. Roots no longer tripped your steps. You wove through them, part of the rhythm rather than fighting it.
You gained ground quickly.
Too quickly for him to react.
He turnedโ
You were already there.
Your arrow aimed.
Steady.
Unwavering.
For a momentโ
You saw it.
The fear in his eyes.
The same kind of fear you used to feel.
Helpless.
Small.
Controlled.
Your grip tightened.
Thenโ
You exhaled.
And released.
Silence returned slowly.
Gradually.
The kind that settled after something had been disturbed.
You stood there for a moment, chest rising and falling.
Alive.
Present.
In control.
โYou moved well.โ
The voice came from behind you.
You didnโt startle.
Youโd heard him approach.
Of course you had.
Soโlek stepped into view, gaze sweeping over the sceneโthe fallen soldiers, the disturbed ground, the path you had taken.
Assessing.
Always assessing.
โYou were not reckless,โ he continued. โYou adapted.โ
You lowered your bow slightly.
โI handled it.โ
It wasnโt defiance.
Justโฆ truth.
His eyes met yours.
For a moment, something flickered there again.
Recognition.
Approval.
Something deeperโ
Gone before it could settle.
โYes,โ he said.
A pause.
โYou did.โ
Others arrived soon after.
Naโvi from nearby clans, drawn by the disturbance.
They moved through the area with purpose, checking the aftermath, speaking in low, urgent tones.
You stepped back slightly, letting them pass.
Observing.
Learning.
A few glanced at you.
Then looked again.
Different this time.
Not uncertain.
Not questioning.
One of themโolder, scarredโgave a small nod as he passed.
Respect.
It hit you harder than you expected.
You glanced toward Soโlek.
He stood a short distance away, speaking with another warrior.
Composed.
Controlled.
Distant.
Butโ
When his gaze flicked back to youโ
Just for a momentโ
You saw it.
Pride.
Something had changed.
Not just in you.
In him.
It showed in small ways first.
The kind most would miss.
But you didnโt.
Not anymore.
โYour footing is off.โ
You adjusted immediately, shifting your weight as instructed.
โBetter,โ Soโlek said.
No correction layered over correction.
Justโ
Better.
You stilled slightly at that.
Before continuing.
It wasnโt praise.
Not exactly.
But it wasnโt dismissal either.
And from himโ
It meant something.
Training no longer felt like being shaped.
It felt like being refined.
There was a difference.
Before, he had watched for failure.
Nowโ
He watched for choice.
For instinct.
For how you adapted without being told.
โYou hesitated.โ
You glanced at him, brow furrowing. โI assessed.โ
A pause.
The faintest tilt of his head.
โExplain.โ
That was new.
You shifted your stance slightly, considering your words.
โThe wind shifted,โ you said. โIf I had released it when I first drew it, I would have missed it.โ
His gaze sharpenedโnot in correction, but in focus.
โAnd instead?โ
โI waited.โ
A beat.
โAnd adjusted.โ
Silence.
Not heavy.
Not tense.
Justโฆ consideration.
โYes.โ
The single word settled differently this time.
Not instruction.
Acknowledgement.
You felt it.
That shift.
Clearer now.
You werenโt just following anymore.
You were deciding.
And heโ
He was letting you.
The distance hadnโt disappeared.
It hadโฆ changed.
Refined.
More controlled.
More deliberate.
โAgain.โ
You released the arrow.
It struck clean.
True.
You didnโt look at the target.
You looked at him.
He was already watching you.
Not the shot.
You.
Something tightened in your chest.
Not discomfort.
Something else.
Something heavier.
โYou anticipated the movement,โ he said.
โYes.โ
A pause.
Thenโ
โYou are no longer reacting.โ
Your breath caught slightly at that.
Because thatโ
That meant more than any correction he had ever given you.
โI know,โ you said quietly.
The words settled between you.
Different.
Not student and teacher. Not quite.
Something else.
The tension shifted with it.
Subtle.
But undeniable.
Before, it had feltโฆ restrained.
Like something neither of you were meant to acknowledge.
Nowโ it felt inevitable.
You noticed it in the way he held your gaze a second longer than necessary.
In the way silence between you no longer felt like absenceโ
But presence.
In the way every step closer carried weight.
And stillโ
He kept control.
You stepped closer without thinking.
Just slightly.
But enough.
He noticed.
Of course he did.
The space between you narrowed.
Not accidental.
Not careless.
โYou donโt correct me as much anymore,โ you said quietly.
โNo.โ
โWhy?โ
A pause.
Not avoidance.
Deliberation.
โBecause you do not require it in the same way.โ
That wasnโt the full answer.
You could feel it.
โAnd in the other way?โ you pressed.
There it was.
That line again.
The one neither of you had fully crossed.
His expression shiftedโsubtle, controlled.
But not empty.
โThat is not relevant to your training.โ
You huffed softly.
โIt hasnโt been about just training for a while.โ
Silence.
This timeโ
He didnโt deny it.
But he didnโt step closer either.
โThere are factors you do not yet fully consider,โ he said instead.
Your brow furrowed. โLike what?โ
A beat.
โTime,โ he said.
โExperience.โ
Another pause.
Thenโ
โAge.โ
The word landed heavier than expected.
You studied him.
โYou think that matters.โ
โI know that it does.โ
There was no shame in it.
No uncertainty.
Just fact.
โBut it doesnโt change this,โ you said, gesturing lightly between you.
His jaw tightened slightly.
โIt complicates it.โ
You took another small step forward.
Closing the space again.
โAnd thatโs enough for you to keep your distance?โ
His gaze dropped brieflyโ
Not to the ground.
To you.
Closer now.
โYes.โ
Simple.
Final.
โYou still donโt trust me with it,โ you said softly.
His eyes snapped back to yours.
Sharp.
โThat is not what this is.โ
โThen what is it?โ
The question lingered.
This timeโ
He didnโt answer.
Not with words.
Told you enough.
It wasnโt doubt.
It was choice.
You started noticing things you hadnโt before.
Not about the forest.
About your people.
It began with observation.
โYou are staring.โ
Riโnelaโs voice broke your focus.
You blinked, glancing at her. โI am not.โ
Her brow lifted slightly.
You exhaled. โFine. I am.โ
Her gaze followed yours brieflyโtowards a mated pair speaking quietly at the edge of camp.
Understanding dawned quickly.
You shifted slightly, suddenly aware of how obvious it must seem. โI was justโฆ wondering.โ
โAbout courting?โ she asked, not unkindly.
You hesitated.
Then nodded.
Riโnela paused before speaking. โThere is knowing first. A recognition. Then a decision.โ
โA choice,โ you murmured.
โYes.โ
A choice.
Your gaze drifted across the camp.
Landing, inevitablyโ
On him.
Soโlek stood apart as he often did, speaking with Tamtey and Nor. Composed. Focused. Untouchable.
โYou already know,โ Riโnela said quietly.
You blinked. โKnow what?โ
She didnโt look at you.
โWho you are watching.โ
You didnโt answer.
You didnโt need to.
That night, you found him alone.
Of course you did.
โYou avoid the others more than usual.โ
Your voice cut gently through the quiet.
Soโlek didnโt turn immediately.
โI am where I need to be.โ
You stepped closer. โThat sounds familiar.โ
Now he looked at you.
Measured.
Waiting.
The space between you settled quickly into something charged.
Not uncertain.
Not fragile.
Justโฆ full.
โI spoke with Riโnela,โ you said.
A slight shift in his posture. โAnd?โ
โShe helped me decide something.โ
His gaze didnโt leave yours.
โAnd what did you decide?โ
You held his eyes.
โThat it is not hidden,โ you said. โNot denied.โ
A pause.
โAnd not avoided.โ
Silence.ย
But not empty.
You did not need to name what you were speaking about.ย
He knew.
โYou believe I am avoiding something,โ he said.
โI know you are.โ
The words didnโt spark anger this time.
Only stillness.
You stepped closer.
Close enough now that you could feel the steadiness of his presence. The quiet control he held so tightly.
โWhy?โ you asked, softer now.
For a long momentโ
He said nothing.
Thenโ
โYou were not ready.โ
The answer landed differently than you expected.
Not dismissal.
Not deflection.
Truth.
โAnd now?โ you asked.
His gaze shiftedโsubtle, but unmistakable.
Taking you in.
Not as a student.
Not as something fragile.
As something else.
โYou have changed,โ he said.
Your breath caught slightly.
โSo have you,โ you replied.
A quiet tension stretched between you.
Not uncomfortable.
Not uncertain.
Justโฆ waiting.
โI held distance because it was necessary,โ he continued. โBecause anything else would have influenced your choices. Your growth.โ
You frowned slightly. โYou think I would have chosen differently?โ
โYes.โ
The certainty in his voice made your chest tighten.
He stepped closer.
Closing the last of the space.
โAnd that would not have been fair to you,โ he said.
Your breath stilled.
โI waited,โ he added, quieter now, โbecause you deserved the choiceโunclouded.โ
The words settled deep.
Clear.
Intentional.
Real.
You searched his face.
And found no hesitation there.
No distance.
No restraintโat least, not in the same way.
โYou donโt have to wait anymore,โ you said softly.
Something shifted in him.
Not breaking.
Not losing control.
Butโฆ releasing it.
His hand liftedโslow, deliberate.
Giving you time to step back.
To refuse.
To choose.
You didnโt.
His fingers brushed your jaw, then settled, warm and steady against your skin.
Different this time.
Not grounding.
Not corrective.
Intentional.
Your breath caught as you leaned into the touch without thinking.
Without fear.
His gaze softenedโjust slightly.
Enough.
โYou are certain?โ he asked.
You didnโt hesitate.
โYes.โ
That was all it took.
The distance between you disappeared.
His other hand came to your waist, drawing you closerโnot rushed, not forceful, but firm in a way that made your breath hitch.
Your hands found him just as easily, gripping lightly at his arms, grounding yourself in something real.
When he kissed you, it was not careless.
Not overwhelming.
It was controlled.
At first.
A quiet, deliberate meeting.
A question answered.
But the longer it lingeredโ
The more that control shifted.
Your grip tightened slightly.
His hand followed the movement, pulling you closer still.
The restraint that had defined every moment between you didnโt disappearโ
