A Strange Place

When we were young, we used to play in the forest behind the old church. I remember the wind dancing through the tangle of our hair and the twigs from the bushes tickling our skin. You would turn your face up to the sky and let the lemony sunshine create a constellation of freckles across your cheeks. We’d talk about dreams with the sugar sweet taste that the freedom of childhood brings. I remember it all clearly, the blue patch of sky through the trees, the taste of sugar cookies, the sounds of laughter. The smoothness of the heart shaped rock that you found and pressed into my palm. The softness of the woven bracelet that we tied on each other’s wrists and the way we smiled at the word “forever”. Those days are gone now, memories shut away as if hidden in a shoebox and stuffed in a closet. Ignored almost always, but still kept for sentimentality’s sake. But sometimes when I feel the heady weight of reality, of the present and the future, I venture into the closet, take out the shoebox, and I remember.

My all time favourite book, I think I discovered it mid-last year and I’ve read it through at least 4 times. It’s narrated in a whimsical sort of way, noticing the little details of life and finding a little bit of light on dark days. Highly recommend 

cut my hair a few (two?) years ago, kinda wish it was like this again so I could play with it :(
