This happened a while ago and everything went fine, but I‘ve been thinking about this too much recently and I can‘t ask anyone around me for obvious reasons. Please excuse if some of this is vague - I am a witch, and I have no way of knowing how many of you are witches, too.

So this girl was new in my class (she shouldn‘t have been there! My teacher just picked her up like a lost kitten) and she didn‘t know *anything*. By which I mean she couldn‘t do things I could do when I was five. And yes, she didn’t grow up with magic like the rest of us did. But that doesn‘t count as an excuse when you‘re going for a witch apprenticeship!

And so, when our teacher was gone, I told her about the first trial she‘d have to take to be a real witch apprentice. I didn’t lie. Everything I told her was the truth, and I even lent her my shoes.

I didn’t count on her going through with it. I just wanted to scare her into leaving, to be honest. That’s why I didn’t even think it was an issue that the test was nearly impossible to master that time of year. I thought she‘d see how dangerous it was and turn around immediately.

But that’s not what happened. She didn‘t turn around, and she did pass the test under the most strenuous conditions and did come back as a true witch apprentice.

And the worst thing: she didn’t tell on me. When our teacher came back, she had him believe all of it had been her own idea, and I still don’t get it. She could have told him I pushed her, and I would have received the stern talking-to instead.

But she didn’t! Instead, she repaired the shoes I lent her and has been nothing but nice to me and I don’t understand. I grew up with the notion that other people had to be useful to you, and that you treated them accordingly, and I just can‘t understand that she‘d want to be my friend despite all of this.

Anyway, I don’t hate her anymore and I have to admit I feel a little bad. But I couldn’t have known how tenacious and resourceful she was, and she didn’t get hurt after all. So, AITA?

Update: everyone told me to so - fine, yes, I did manage to apologize to her and it went well. I knew it would, she‘s too nice to keep a grudge. unrelated, but does anyone know how to tell if you have a crush?
