as much as I love badass characters pushing through pain to fight, I also love when they hit a point where they just can't. something structural is wrong or broken, so they can't stand. their muscles are simply too weak and overworked to hold them up. their bloody hands slip off the handles of their weapons, they can't aim through their vertigo or tunneling vision, they shake from blood loss or exhaustion even if not from fear. they've just reached their limit, and no amount of willpower will change that!
It's so interesting that the first thing to really disarm Jeong is him saying "Sure you caused a little trouble, it is what it is. Don't worry yourself over what's already in the past. This old man would never abandon a member of his own family."
"How...unexpected. He may have just made his all-time greatest enemy...but he still protected me merely because he considers me family now?"
He really pauses, not a thinking sort of pause, but genuinely taken aback, and then for the first time ever he is prompted to think of his grandfather by someone, by someone's positive words and treatment toward him.
And then the Poison Master asks him some questions rather than just let things be like other people who have been afraid of him. Like the diviner teacher, this man ISN'T turned off by how scary he and his potential are, he's excited about it and to be a teacher to him and see what he achieves.
He thinks of Jeong as an absolute treasure.
He asks Jeong what happened and Jeong gives honest answers, and then he believes it. He gives Jeong options, listens to his opinions, and trusts and goes along with them while preparing to deal with the outcome of that path.
They follow each other's thoughts easily; the Poison Master is proving good at guiding Jeong into a thought and then adapting to and following along with Jeong's sideways takes and leaps of thought/action.
I'm really looking forward to this relationship and mentorship progressing.
Also appreciating how the art style for Jeong has subtly changed. He's still clearly himself, bit it looks like he lost some baby fat after the body reformation into a demigod. He's looking just a bit older, more masculine, still a beautiful face, but leaning closer to handsome than pretty now:

So the other day I got a question about my timeline, specifically involving Basil/Parsley. I love when this comes up because I get to prove it out and stamp out years of Natsume's bad localization decisions every. single. time.
Magical Melody's Basil and Save The Homeland's Parsley are the same person. No, this is NOT the same person as 64's Basil.
And here's why:
(Translated from https://web.archive.org/web/20051101095413/http://www.shiauta.com/column_06_04.html)
Basil (Magical Melody)
"My dream is to spend my whole life chasing after plants!"
Family: Unknown
First appearance: At the Sunnyshore Lake event
Birthday: Spring 16th
Hometown: Unknown
Hobbies: Plant collecting
Height: 174cm
Address: No fixed address
The other image on the right is "Parsley" (Basil!!!!!!!) from Save the Homeland's official guide book. They share the same details, except the age of 21 which you only find out in Save the Homeland. The Basil married to Lillia in 64 (or married to Anna in BTN) is a different Basil, with a birthday of Summer 11 and an age of 36.
But wait, here's more! (also from the Magical Melody blurb)
Common places to find him: Exploring caves, souvenir shops, wandering all over the village
Likes: Strawberries, Pontata roots, herbal tea, tomato juice, grass juice, corn, various herbs, etc.
Dislikes: Mayonnaise, scrap ore, failed dishes, sautéed poisonous mushrooms
Background: A recurring character seen in various places throughout the series' history.
It is said that the males of his family all share the name "Basil." Their professions vary, including plant hunter, botanist, pharmacist, and others. Is a flower the key to meeting him...?

It's no surprise that Bokumono has its own version of Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy, given that Wada and the team over at Game Freak + Atsuko Nishida were on good terms with each other! (You can even find a rival child wearing a Pikachu hat in HM64!)
But sure, that might not be concrete enough evidence for you - dear reader who might ask "but how can Basil be a rival for both Nina and married to Lillia if not for being an AU?!" - and I get that! So here's an official comment from Wada about the world setting of Magical Melody.
和田さんコメント
今回の舞台となっている花 の芽村は『牧場物語2』より も前の時代という設定です。
Wada-san's Comment
The setting for this game, Flowerbud Village, is established to be in an era before "Bokujou Monogatari 2."
---
And even after all of that, Theodore is the mayor of SNES Flowerbud Village and Magical Melody's Flowerbud Village. His grandson Thomas is the mayor in 64. Ellen - an original bachelorette from SNES/MM - is a granny by HM64, and the last of her era's residents. 64Karen's grandmother is Eve, and 64Ran and 64Gray's grandmother is Ann! There's definitely been more than 60 years in between. There's no way those two Basils are the same person after all that time!

From what I've seen, you seem to like the subsituite units. Why is that? While a few do get some additional scenes, most are just carbon copies of the child units. No diss or anything, I'm genuinely curious is all.
Not a problem! I think the best way to sum it up is in this gif:
Further thoughts below
A theme that flows in the background of FE4 and FE5 is that "regardless of who is in charge, the common people suffer." Though our main focus are descendants of the Crusaders, the general nobility and the Loptous Sect, normal people are forced to endure the hardship caused by these people's machinations.
Having substitute units who are NOT connected to the "grand narrative" but still have to live under its shadow is a fascinating concept. They were not born for greatness-- they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
While many have similar setups, classes, and mechanics, the substitute kids also have differences in legacies and expectations-- save for Amid and Linda and maybe Charlot, Jeanne and Tristan, none of them have the /same/ things going on. Their stories have fundamental differences to their "canon" counterparts.
In some ways, the substitute characters are ways to connect and build on discussions and ideas I've shared with my friends in interesting ways: my head canons for Hawk and Hermina regarding their parents/backgrounds are a lot in part to @charisu , and similar goes for Jeanne (And we feed our mutual devotion to the shrine of Asahoku (Arthur/Hawk), hallowed by thy name--)
@dithorba also supported me thinking about Linda/Laylea in that they are both girls who lack agency in their life, and finding that in one another is sweet! Also my head canons of Linda and Amid being Miranda's half sibs are Floating Around the fandom space/Laylea being a member of the Dandelion gang is a. head canon of mine.
Let me give you a fun example: Jeanne and Nanna. Both troubadours, both raised by Finn and foster sister and potential love interest to Leif. However, THEY ARE ACTUALLY QUITE DIFFERENT!
Nanna is connected to her position as an heir to Nordion. She knew her mom for a short time and that haunts her. She also wants TO RULE: all of her lovers convos are with Leif, Seliph, or Ares (which uh, also ties into her mom). She is also clever, if we consider the letter she can give to Ares to be fake. Nanna knows she's a princess and wants to be a queen.
Jeanne, on the other hand (despite gameplay), I think leans more into the "lady knight" archetype, given the name, and being raised by Finn. She has connections for Agustria bc her bio father was a Cross Knight (likely Eve), but also remembers the tragedy of losing the merchant that adopted her. Her closest bonds by default are Leif, Finn, and maybe Tristan. She has no one else, and feels a sense of duty. I like expanding from what we /know/ to infer other possibilities, hence "Tightrope" and "Osmanthus" is about her struggle to find a sense of identity beyond her connections/duty to Leif and Finn, also parallel to me writing her as a trans girl.
I can write even more about my own reads/inspirations for what makes the substitute kiddos unique to their counterparts (also hope to explore that more in Osmanthus), but I think its that further layer of desperation, of a knowledge that you ARE NOT SPECIAL that adds a fun dynamic to writing the FE4 substitute kids.
Gameplay wise, I think they are fun in a similar way that Arden in Gen I can be fun-- weaker, harder to train and use, don't come with the benefits of Gen I parents in skills, stats, or weapons, but each one has a unique opportunity to grow/gang something their counterpart can't.
