AFL Depth Charts are interesting concept that takes many of its ideas from the NFL Depth Charts, which is all about ranking players based on their positional ability.
The depth chart is a list of players sorted by position, and then sorted again by likelihood of playing in the next game for their AFL team, without reference to injury status. Thus the first player mentioned in each list is guaranteed of a game and is the best player that the club has in that position, whereas the last player is a fringe player at best, will rarely if ever get a game and is only on the club’s list as a development player or veteran backup
If you wonder over to Fan Footy (Click Here) you will now see that their depth charts are hideously out of date and the last time I did a Depth Chart was in the middle of the 2013 season (Click Here)
Its time for an update, as of the end of the 2014 AFL Season.

Its that time of the year again, Draft Time! Always makes for an interesting time as we all try and predict who we will get to our club with out first pick.
Its still a while out from the draft, but with trade period over and picks now set for the upcoming draft, you can have a fairly good crack at the Top 20.
1 - Petracca - Lock. Next.
2 - Brayshaw - Next.
3 - McCartin - Choosing him over Wright.
4 - Wright - Will either be McCartin or Wright here.
5 - Laverde - Pies to go a mid to complement Moore.
6 - Lever - GWS have two picks to play with and will go tall with at least one. Lever the pick of the talls left to go first.
7 - Ahern - Next best mid to work with the new tall.
8 - Weller - Local boy from Southport. Would be hard to turn down a local tallent.
9 - Moore - Nothing to see here. Next.
10 - Durdin - Too good to go past here! Geelong will end up with either Lever or Durdin, depending on who GWS take.
11 - 20 - From here on it is always a bit of guess work. If a player falls from the top 10, they go next which pushes the rest down. Just too much guess work here.
Ange made a great start his new era of Australian soccer cutting deadwood from the team and choosing some young players to take the Soceroos forward to Brazil 2014.
Ange wont allow his team play 'hoof-ball', so will he play a similar style to his previous teams and employ a false 9? Perhaps - but where does that leave the selection of a player like Kennedy? A tall lumbering target man.
Still many questions to be asked of the new manager but its starting to take shape.
Franjic & Wilkinson's selections make it clear that he is after a new look at the back and I expect them to play. Williams ahead of the old boy Neil and Davidson just ahead of Zullo.
Employing the same system that has seen so much success in the A-League, the two DM would be Milligan & Jedinak. Milligan he knows well from the Victory where he became an elite play under and Ange and it will be interesting to see how Jedinak approaches the new system.
The midfield is where thing get interesting and we all hope that Ange goes down the path of exiting youth. Kruse, Rogic & Oar are the future and lets start it now at our next game. Rogic the creator, Kruse & Oar the pace and scoring options. Those three excite me and will the 1000's of aussie fans.
Cahill remains in the team as the last of the old brigade. He is in world class form in the MLS and deserves to hold his place. Secondly he will suit the role of the false 9, he has the ability to pass, hold the ball up, shot and link up the team. He is the wise old head to lead the team in this vital position.

We all get sucked into this every year, creating teams that look nothing like the final outcome. Its fun, easy and harmless as long as you dont take it too seriously at this stage.
I was looking for value and nothing else. More interested to see whats available on the cheap in 2014, rather than creating a proper team.
Some nice mid-priced backs to choose from including the injuy prone Grimes, Waters & Bock.
The forwards have a few that never really got going in 2013 due to injuring including Wellingham, Whitecross & Thomas.
The midfield has one auto-lock, Dayne Beams! At that price of around 400k he will be there come round 1. Once again injuries got a hold of Swollow, Cotchin, Murphy, Bennell, Carrazzo in 2013 and if fit, will improve their output.
The rucks are an interesting area, with many choices available including a few fallen premiums. McEvoy at a new home and Maric with Hampson as his backup should get back to some 2012 form. I hope.......
Many years ago Fan Footy created Depth Charts for AFL football clubs in a similar vein to the NFL Depth Charts.
The depth chart is a list of players sorted by position, and then sorted again by likelihood of playing in the next game for their AFL team, without reference to injury status. Thus the first player mentioned in each list is guaranteed of a game and is the best player that the club has in that position, whereas the last player is a fringe player at best, will rarely if ever get a game and is only on the club's list as a development player or veteran backup
If you wonder over to Fan Footy (Click HERE) you will now see that their depth charts are hideously out of date. They still have players the like of Shane O'Bree & Jaxson Barham running around for the black & white!

*** The two hardest things creating depth charts are trying to decide if a player is a Key Position or Small Position player and deciding if a player is an Outside Midfielder or Small Forward. Many of the outside midfielder are equally adapt to playing either a small forward or small defender roll. Players like Maxwell, Oxley and Goldsack, whilst are not traditional Key Position players, they are more adapt to playing deep forward/back roles, rather than pushing up into the high forward/back roles. Then the contraction comes when you start have players like Toovey who are not tall but never venture too high up the ground......

Overeem provided MMA fans with one of the greatest moments we have ever seen inside the octagon! While the fight has been much discussed, it does leave us with the questions "Whose next for Cain?"!
Lets break it down with the current list of Top 10 fighters (According to MMA Torch at the start of February) in the Heavyweight Division:
Champion: Cain Velasquez
1. Junior dos Santos
No - Was just demolished by Cain in their last fight and I think he needs 1-2 fights to get back to title contention.
2. Alistair Overeem
No - The reason why this article is written is that he lost the title shot by losing to Bigfoot.
3. Daniel Cormier
No - Wont fight his friend and teammate Cain.
4. Fabricio Werdum
Maybe - Is the clear #1 contender but he is already booked to fight Big Nog in June. So the turn around doesn't work for the UFC. The only way would be to cancel his fight with Big Nog and let him fight for the title.
5. Frank Mir
Maybe - If he beats Cormier then he has to be looked at! He is a clear underdog in the Cormier fight, but Mir is a proven former title holder. Although his April fight might be too late if they want Cain to have quick turn around.
6. Josh Barnett
Yes - He may be a steroid using Goliath, but he is not currently booked to fight and would be good enough to fight for the belt. Problems are that he cant settle on a deal with the UFC, as he wont give up his extra curricular activities.....He is also not the reining Strikeforce champion, as he lost that to Werdum.
7. Antonio Silva
No - His last fight with Cain was a murder.....
8. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
No - Booked to fight Werdum and if they cancel that bout it would be to give Werdum the title fight and not Big Nog. Already been KO by Cain and I dont think anyone really wants to see a rematch.
9. Stefan Struve
Maybe - His upcoming fight with Mark Hunt may just be a title eliminator! Yes, thats how sad the heavyweight division is right now! On a 4 fight winning steak and we know he will either finish or be finished! Still only 24 and he has been around forever, so even if this is not his time I think he will one day get a title fight.
10. Roy Nelson
Maybe - Mir, Werdum, Dos are all the headline losses that Big Country has on his resume. Nothing more than a glorified 'gate-keeper' but how about lets sell the fight as the American vs the Mexican and get red neck yanks to watch! Only to see their fat icon get demolished by a superior Mexican.....
~. Mark Hunt
Maybe - Long, long, long shot, but a if he destroys Struve why not? We will get a knockout in the title fight and Hunt is also on a 3 fight winning streak since arriving in the UFC. Im not a fan of him or his game at all, but come on why not?!?!? Dont we all want to see him get knocked out!
My Thoughts
1) Werdum - I would give it to the only legitimate #1 contender and get Werdum to fight for the title. It would mean that he would have to cancel his date with Big Nog, but to be honest I dont really want to see that fight anyway!
2) Barnett - As I dont see the UFC reassigning Werdum that I think we move onto Barnett. I would be happy to see the fight but Barnett is refusing to sign with the UFC again and he has a history of steroid abuse. Next....
3) Big Country - I see this fight selling and being entertaining. If you look at it, this may just the only option they have! A July fight between Cain & Roy! Although he has to get past Kongo first and that is one big test for Nelson. Kongo is a BEAST and while Nelson has a history of being able to knock out beasts, but still its a tough fight for the big man.
4) The winner of Struve vs Hunt - Yes I think that could be where we are heading, especially if Struve wins & Roy Nelson looses, why not give the kid a title shot. There are seriously no other options!
It is now a couple of months since the might of Port Melbourne lost the VFL Grand Final & it is perhaps time allow my previous thoughts to the world! I wrote the following piece shortly after the GF loss, in hasty and unforgiving mood! While the dust may have settled on the season and the GF loss, the failure to convert a fantastic opportunity is what will forever remain with the Port Melbourne Football Club.
So whilst I do go pretty hard on some individuals below, I think there are many people who would agree with what has been written.
Ruckman
Wayde Skipper is a much maligned footballer, who has played to moderate success at the highest level of football. His VFL performances in 2011 for Port Melbourne were admirable, when he was pushed by fellow bigmen Fabian DeLuca & co.
2012 was a different story for Skipper who was the leading man for the season, with support from Adrian Bonnedeo. The club failed to list another ruckman in the 2012 squad leaving itself venerable to injury and poor form. This no more apparent when Skipper spent the first 16 weeks of the season turning up to late to training, take a half-hearted approach to game day and effectively cornering the club with his "its me or no one" approach.
The club clearly had enough of Skippers attitude and promoted a 17yo Oakleigh Cannons ruckman to the first team under the 23rd man rule. This was the first time Skipper was tested as a ruckman but more importantly as a person. The kid took it upto Skipper and in the eyes of some out performed the aging ruckman.
Finals arrived and Skipper played a career best game, dominating the first final and showing what he can do at his best on the small Port ground. For many it looked like the persistence had paid off and when push came to shove, Skipper was still interested and still the man.
That was until a disgraceful performance by Skipper on the biggest stage of the year, the Grand Final. Skipper was outclasses, outworked and out muscled by two of the games best VFL ruckman, Dawson Simson & 4 time premiership ruckman Orial Stevenson. Skipper was a duck out of water on the big ground and lost hitouts 3-1. Skipper failed to provide an option on the big ground and become more of a liability than an asset. With Bonnedeo needed up forward, it was left to Skipper to slowly fade away, much like the rest of the team in the ruck.
Bonnedeo is a fantastic ruckman against smaller developing ruckman in the VFL, where he can use his size and weight advantage to full effect. He is also suited to the smaller confinements of Port Melbourne home ground and can be found wanting on the larger grounds, where his tank (not his endeavor like Skipper) lets him down. Bonnedeo provided a quality backup options for Skipper throughout the year.
Port Melbourne failed to create a plan B option for the ruck when things were not going as to plan. It was either Skipper or Bonnedeo for Port and the club never looked for a third plan 'B' get out classless. Never once was a dynamic player like Billy Burstain thrown into the middle or the occasionally lacking confidence key forward, Dean Gallea or even key defender Ryan Gale. The nearest Port came to trying something was by promoting reserves Key Defender/Utility Luke Casey-Leigh.
The clubs failure to provide a valued second option cost the club on the biggest day of the year. Its over-reliance on a temperamental and inadequate footballers proved costly to a proud club.
Lack of plan 'B'
As mentioned in the Ruckman saga, the lack of a plan 'B' option was no more evident than in the Grant Final. The failure to look 'out side the box' enabled Geelong to get clearances time after time, with relative ease. Geelong went with two big blokes who were both listed inside their top 6 on the day. Port were unable to find a suitable option to nullify either Simpsons or Stephenson.
Geelong found good space through the midfield by running players with youthful exuberance into the engine room and simple running rings around the static Port midfield. Port failed to create another option to combat the continuing losses and stuck with the tried and true old man brigade in the midfield, much to their detriment.
The forward line also never once throughout the year tried a different set up. The nearest they came was around mid season when Shane Valenti was conditionally injured and he was played a small leading forward out of the square. 5 minutes later the idea was shammed, not because it was an epic fail, and Valenti failed to return to a small forward role. Port Melbourne needed to find avenues to goal other than the standard, 'kick it long to Galea' option. Whether this could have come from playing Valenti out of the square more often or trying Plemming or Gale as a lead up forward, the club continued to stick to their stubborn guns and it ultimately cost them the Grand Final
Loss of Dwyer
The loss of Dwyer at the pointy end of the season proved a costly situation for Port Melbourne. Dwyer was a key component in the Port Melbourne setup and was a leading man for the outfit. While it is not Port's fault he went down injured, the loss certainly didn't help the clubs cause. More significantly was the fact they played a visibly limping and distressed Dwyer in key finals. While he performed admirably, there were full fit options available who would feel a little hard done by from their exclusion from the team.
Failure of key players in big moments (Note: Players who failed to 'step up' in defining moments of the season and/or the Grand Final. More importunity, these guys are leaders who have no excuse. They should thrive on the big stage, not wilt into third division SFL player)
Dean Gallea
John Baird
Matthew Dillion
Wayde Skipper
Flat Track Bullies (Note: We are talking about players who love beating up on inferior opponents, especially on the small North Port Oval. - Also I am a big fan of each of the players listed below & watching them in full flight is a sight to behold. I just wish we could see it week in week out!)
The National Draft is complete and the rules have been set for Dream Team 2013. This makes NOW the perfect time for a fair crack at your initial team for the upcoming season.
The big changes in 2013 are:
6-8-2-6 Structure (Previously 7-6-2-7)
30 Trades (Previously in the low 20's)
4 Emergencies (Previously 3)
Best 18 for Multi-bye weekends
Major issue for the moment is the new structure of Dream Team to the 8 midfield system. This should allow us to stack it full stars, whether they be stars, Mid-Prices or the many good rookies.
Once again, head over to FanFooty & have a crack for yourself!

Rohan Connelly has compiled his end of season 2012 All Australian Team and like his Mid-Season team it is both complete and extensive in thought. Still I will disagree with a couple of his selections (as we all will) and I will throw in my 2cents worth.
This has allowed for 4 changes from my mid-season team:
IN: Waters, Birchall, Pavlich, Beams
OUT: Rance, Toovey, Riewoldt, Stanton
Waters & Birchall become must have selections and forced out Rance & Toovey, who both didn't set the world alight in the second half of the year. Pav gets the nod ahead of Roo, more from his shear number of goals. Beams finished in fine form whilst the Stanton train stopped dead midway through the year.
There are also 6 changes from Rohan team:
IN: Glass, M.Johnson, Deledio, Pavlich, Jetta Boyd
OUT: McPharlin, Thompson, Reilly, Hawkins, Milne, Mitchell
Glass & McPharlin are both worthy FB choices and Glass the gig as he was the first choice in the first half of the year and he did nothing wrong in the second half to say he should get selection.
Scott Thompson was not even selected in the best 40 players of the season, which is a poor decision but that make him ineligible for my team. Reilly slowed down towards the end of the year and didn't even make my first half of the season team and makes him an automatic out. Johnson & Deledio make strong cases for inclusion ahead of Reilly & Thompson.
Hawkins & Pavlich is another that could go either way and both deserve a spot in the All Australian team. Pavlich gets the go for my team, although I wouldn't be disappointed to see Hawkins ahead of him. Milne is a tiprat and deserves no place in any team...... Milne was also ranked 12th in StKilda's club champion awards over the weekend, showing his own club dont rate him. If he is not in the best 12 at St Kilda how can he be in the best 22 in the league???
Boyd & Mitchell is another toss of the coin, but whilst Boyd did make the 40 man squad(yes that is a contradiction to an earlier statement) he was lead the AFL in so many key categories it is not funny. Boyd did all this in an average team who struggled for large chunks of the season and comes in ahead of Mitchell.
The one eyed colossus of Rohan Connelly had a massive crack at his team, the Essendon Football Club, calling them "soft". Personally I enjoy nothing more than seeing the Essendon Football Club & their supporters in pain and in this instance I agree wholeheartedly with Rohan. Rohan said what I have been saying about Essendon for years, they are a team full of nothing more than "average footballers". They seem to enjoy holding onto players with the hope that one day they will turn good, but in this day and age you can not afford to hold onto players for four, five or eight years hoping they will develop into the player you see them becoming. In many cases the only people who see the talent in many of the players on Essendon's list is the clubs staff and coaches. The Essendon list is poor at best and has been for at least 10 years. Thus they rightfully moved on the dinosaur Sheedy at the right time, just the wrong way.
Anyway, so who are Essendons "list cloggers"? Lets have a look:
Ricky Dyson - Nice kid that makes Slattery look good!
Scott Gumbleton - Can play, but if you cant get out on the park whats the point? His time is up and while he still has a small amount of value, its time to move on.
Brent Prismall - Geelong reject, who should become an Essendon reject.
Mark McVeigh - Warrior, but the game has gone past him. Quality career and even he knows his time is up.
Sam Lonergan - 25yo, who continues to struggle to put together a full season.
Henry Slattery - Is he the worst 26yo in AFL football???
David Myers - Has had glimpses of being a solid player, but he is now 23 and is still just an average footballer. Perhaps unfair, but you have to make tough decisions in AFL football.
Alwyn Davey - Spud! Not is brother! Never was! He has played his whole career like his brother does now! Complete waste of space.
Kyle Reimers - Didnt make things easy for himself wearing those stupid bright orange boots and he has failed to live upto that potential that he showed. Needs the kick up the backside that a new club would give him.
Nathan Lovett-Murray - Still a solid player and can play football, but is lazy and not a good role model for young developing players. At 29 he will get no better than he already is and does not develop the culture that the football club would want.
With not much work we have come up with 10 players who should be gone at the end of the year without any thought what so ever. 10 no-brainer decisions! There are also a handful of other players who should be looked at as well including Angus Monfies, Kyle Hardingham and Jason Winderlich, but you have to keep some players around to keep some depth and slowly change the list. Will the bombers have the "balls" to make wholesale changes to their team and give them the best possible chance at making a grand final in the future? Or will will continue being a laughing stock of the league by showing up with players like Dyson, Lonergan, Slattery and co.?

Always been a fan of the kid since I watched him play in the Under 19 Championships at the Dome a few years ago!
He has slowly developed in the VFL and added bulk & size to him frame, while quietly going about his business. Not a high draft pick, so no hype or hysteria that it has taken him a few years to get going. This is the perfect use of the Rookie List!
The kid CAN play, although please dont ruin him Carlton and think he is a ruckman! He is a big power key forward, who can be the answer to all your problems!
Nice to see that they double check things before they put them on their website!
Do not ever buy from CentreCom unless you have done all your research and know exactly what you are after and know that they are cheapest price available! Otherwise stay well clear and DO NOT BUY from CentreCom!
Think its just me? Well have a look HERE at their fabulous feedback at Product Review Australia!
