Diego Velasquez responded to the terrors of the Thirty Years' War by painting Mars Resting. He shows us the god of war in near-naked repose, looking simultaneously vulnerable and threatening. He stares at us with a direct, louche gaze. Mars is at rest for the moment, but could soon pick up his weapons and begin the slaughter again:
