I saw on my hometown's newspaper that one of my high school football coaches passed away.
He was a firecracker, and at times I wonder how different/better things would have been if he had more authority in what was called offensively. He was the offensive coordinator but there wasn't that title at that point, but I think a lot of times he was throttled down into simply running the ball 40 plus times a game as opposed to having more of a pass run/mix. In 3 years we probably threw the ball 10 plus times maybe 6 or 7 times.
Anyway, he wasn't my position coach, but he was fierce. Plenty of times, you'd see him grab the facemask of a DB, or RB and let them know what they weren't doing right.
Hearing a couple of stories from the other coaches about things he did while scouting or at a coaches clinic bring a smile to my face as I reminisce.
I talked with him a few times after graduation here and there, and I think his quick wittedness was lost on some since he came off as fairly reserved. I'm glad he got to see a few of the laurels he deserved before he passed.
RIP Coach, I hate we never had one more conversation.
