Because I make a lot of Icebyrd art (and am also writing a fic), I’ll periodically get comments about how Robyn isn’t that much taller than Winter, and the height difference I portray is wrong. But here’s the thing: I refuse to take Winter’s unofficially tweeted height as gospel because this isn’t what’s reflected on-screen. And because I always have to pull out the same arguments and screenshots, I’ve decided to compile everything in a master post I can then refer anyone to.

Robyn’s is established at 5’11. That’s pretty consistent throughout the show, and there’s no argument there.

Winter’s height, however, isn’t on her concept art. Now, tweets have gone around where CRWBY have offhandedly offered answers as to what her height is, and this is what the fandom seems to have settled with:

This is wrong and in this TedTalk, I will show you why.

First, in heels, Winter is not 5’9. Ren is 5′9, and she’s not his height.

Looking at the screenshots below, Yang is 5′8, and Winter is still a little shorter than that. 

Because of camera angles, the characters’ positions in space and their postures, drawing lines to measure height on the screenshots above could only do so much. But if Ren is 5′9 and Yang 5′8, Winter’s just a bit smaller, so it looks like 5′7 would be correct. 

If we want other reference points, here’s what a two inch height difference looks like on the show:

Which is consistent with the height difference between Winter and Penny, who is 5'5:

But hey, won’t don’t even need all that guess work because:

We could say that Winter is 5’7½ in heels if we really want to be generous, because she’s got a tiny bit over Emerald here.

Now going back to this:

Winter’s boots have way more than one inch of height. One inch is about the height you have on sturdy boot soles. One inch thickness, that’s what Yang, Ruby, Jaune, Ironwood (most characters not in actually heels) are wearing. If you have boots such as these, break out your ruler and see for yourself.

As someone who does wear heels on the regular… Winter’s heels are 2.5 to 3 inches. For anyone too lazy to google heel height, I’ll make it easy for y’all:

Tldr; Winter’s height on screen is 5’7 to 5’7½ in heels (about 171cm), with a heel height of 2.5 to 3in. Her actual height barefoot is anywhere between 5’4 and 5’5½ (between 162 and 166cm).
