I’ve been watching Messi play since I was a little kid. I watched him shine at Barcelona, I watched him go through his toughest moments with Argentina, and I watched him reach the very top. The truth is, I’ve never known football without Messi.

I always hold on to the hope that there will be one more tournament, one more match. Messi has won everything there was to win and gave us some of the greatest moments of our lives.

Today hurts a little more. Not because we lost the final—an incredible team was better than us today, and that’s part of football. What really hurts is thinking that it might be time to let him go.

I’m not heartbroken because we lost a World Cup. I’m heartbroken because this might have been the last time I watched Messi play in one. Honestly, I don’t know football without him.

I hope that four years from now, if life, his health, and his heart allow it, we’ll get to see him on that stage one more time. And if that day comes, I’ll be there for him.

I’ve never been the girl with a huge group of friends. Anxiety has always made sure of that, and honestly, I know I’m partly to blame, but lately I’ve noticed a pattern.

People who once swore I was their friend suddenly go quiet the second someone new walks into the room.

It’s fascinating, really.

It makes me wonder if I’m genuinely that difficult to keep around, or if people just like the excitement of someone new more than the comfort of someone who’s always been there. The funny thing is, I’m always told I’m kind. I’m the one people vent to. The one who listens. The one who shows up.
