Which I know isn't in line with the usual quick and easy step-by-step worldbuilding guides that float around, nor with the super in-depth "develop the entire geological history of your world" approach (and both of those have merit!) but the real world is by definition the best reference we have when it comes to worldbuilding

When you're developing part of your setting, write down a brief description of that part, find a few (maybe five) real-life places that resemble it, and read up on those. If part of your story takes place in a river valley, find real-life river valleys of similar scale and/or climate, see what they're like, how they developed, and how they shaped the ecosystems and societies within them.
