Jax had a mental breakdown because he realized that he revealed to everyone that he would rather stay permanently trapped with them in the circus than return to the real world without them by his side. He exposed a deeply personal aspect of himself: he has no one, or at least no one good waiting for him in the outside world and would much rather be miserable with everyone in the circus because he considers his real life far worse.
