Imagine when a lukewarm take is so wrong that the author rightfully, publicly drags it....
"Say you've never read Sandman without saying you've never read Sandman."
It's definitely been a week. How did it get so normal and sensible on Tumblr, while the grumpy shouty people are off on Twitter? So odd...
This is why Mr. Fry will always have a seat at my table.
Amen.
I was having a conversation about religion with this guy and he asked me what I would do if I got into heaven and had to sit next to God. I told him I wouldnāt take the seat.
Currently listening to Mr Fry reading Mythos. Utter legend.
And I completely agree š¤

The Good War:Ā How Americaās infatuation with World War II has eroded our conscience

I think whatās also important to note is that WWII was not fought on US shores, allowing it to be romanticised. The war isnāt glamourised in Europe the way it is in the States. Pearl Harbor isnāt viewed as a huge tragedy, but rather one of the final acts of a far more brutal conflict. And, with the exception of the UK joining in the āwar on terrorā, Europe by and large hasnāt had another major war, so shaken were we by WWII.
When I was in 6th grade I had a teacher who would play theĀ āProud to be an Americanā song and video every day after the pledge and make us all sing it and do a little dance to it. Every. Single. Day.Ā
ā45 years ago today, the Chicago Police Department and the FBI murdered Chicago Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton while he slept in bed. The assassination was both the goal and endpoint of an illegal nighttime raid that saw agents and officers spray more than ninety bullets into the apartment where he, his pregnant fiance, and others slept.Ā Prior to his death, Hampton had been the leader of a citywide interracial organizing effort, laboring to bring blacks, Puerto Ricans, and poor whites into a functioning alliance ā what he called a āRainbow Coalition.ā Among his other core initiatives were the negotiation of a truce between Chicagoās gangs to curb street violence, establishment of a free health care clinic for the urban poor, and implementation of one of the most successful Free Breakfast for Children programs that the Panthers ever ran. He was 21 years old when they murdered him. No one was ever convicted in his death. The City of Chicago later settled a civil case for nearly two million dollars.ā

the sad thing is, everyone thinks theyāre so forgettable, or they donāt mean anything to anyone. but you donāt see your high school friend, smiling to themselves, when they think about your quirks or how dramatic you used to be whenever you got a crush. you donāt see the person who saw you around a lot but was always too shy to talk to you. you donāt remember the person you helped, and maybe you didnāt do much for them, but you didnāt know that they were having a shitty month and you sparked their first real smile in weeks. you donāt see the person that secretly loved you too, who never forgot the soft words that you said, or the way you smiled whenever you saw them, or how you reminded them of sunshine and flowers; and how the thought of you pops into their mind more than you will ever know and in the randomest of places. you will never know that a soft song or strawberries or a sunset will remind someone of you. they will go to the beach and think of you for some reason, until they remember that the last time they saw a color as beautiful and as profound as the ocean was when they looked in your eyes. no one knows their impact on people, or their worth. no one thinks they will be missed when they leave, but they donāt know that once you go into someoneās life, even for a fleeting moment, you stay forever, and you take up a soft place that no one else could ever replace.
