On the other, I've kinda grown to resent the fact that most people on here just. pretend that the incest stuff isn't part of Ginger Snaps, despite it being presented as the logical extreme of Brigitte and Ginger's codepedency AND having been more explicit in early drafts of the movie.

Instead, most people "girlbossify" (for lack of a better word) Ginger's descent into monsterhood, giffing her "supernovas" speech but always cutting out the part where she whispers in Ginger's ear that "it's almost like [they] aren't related anymore". As if the same lycanthropy that empowered Ginger to kill and feast on her victims wasn't the same thing that allowed her forgo the incest taboo.

(another thing people hate to acknowledge despite her own sexually predatory behavior saying some really interesting things thematically#wrt gender + gendered experiences of sexual violence + how ‘werewolfism’ in the movie as an overarching metaphor becomes a way to transgres#certain kinds of gendered expectations which is why so many people find this movie compelling in the first place !!#but only if it’s comfortable and ‘empowering’ smh. anyway…….)#+ in the ‘supernovas’ scene she literally says they should ‘swap fluids’ so they can be the same again#after the movie has already set up a werewolf std metaphor (lmao to how that sounds but also it’s serious. thematically.)

#and of course it’s a story with gothic themes + exploration of violence in the domestic sphere#the family structure in these types of stories typically fosters violence and taboo#especially as it’s trying to criticize the disinterest of the parents towards the wellbeing of their children#turning a blind eye to what’s happening inside their own house#to the point that their mother at the end of the movie comes to feel full responsibility for what’s happening to her daughters#and the only solution she can think of is to burn down the house and run away lol

#the movie is so situated in its domestic suburban setting it’s not just a general criticism of ‘society’#but of a specific type of culture whose veneer of wholesomeness normalcy + ‘family values’ allows violence within the domestic sphere#to take place without question behind closed doors#i think it challenges the viewer to be like ‘what’s a normal amount of pain for a teenage girl to experience? is this normal?#at what point does it stop being normal?’ + part of addressing themes of incest in the story is asking#‘is this normal or is it toxic codependency? was their relationship ever normal or safe for brigitte at any point in this movie?’#and the answer is no!! the final stakes of the movie are the same as the ones in the beginning for brigitte!!#total consumption of brigitte’s personhood or death unless she can disentangle herself from her sister#the ​denial of themes of incest in the story imo is a denial of the central relationship#because people want to like ginger + see her as the ultimate fantasy fulfillment of female rage + freedom#which isn’t a WRONG way to respond to the film tbh but it denies a core question about the freedom to act on harmful + taboo desires
